Intro

So prior to our families first visit here to interview at Redeemer two years ago, I had only been to Indianapolis one other time. In 2019 my previous lead pastor and I came here for a conference. My favorite memories from that trip are getting to enjoy the city with him, and I think in a really sweet way that trip actually primed my heart to think fondly of the city that in just a few years I would call home.
I have a great video from this trip of my pastor and I, who was also a Charles but he went by Charlie, taking one of the Lime scooters out along the White River near the ampitheater and the IUPUI campus. The video starts out well as I’m excitedly filming the river as we’re riding along, but it ends poorly when I crash and burn and go flying off the scooter into the grass. It’s really the sound effects that I make during the fall which makes it an enjoyable watch for others, which is why I’ll share the video on social media later today for everyone’s enjoyment.
This tumble of mine is actually illustrative of something that was going on in my heart at the very same time. See, during this conference I heard a message on this passage from Luke 4. As I sat with the text, it began to unsettle me in some fairly significant ways. I got angry over ways I thought this text is commonly mishandled by others. Then I started bringing all of my own ideas onto the text to sort of, force it to say what I wanted it to say. And after a few months of brooding over this passage, I finally crashed into Jesus
