Welcome to Ephesians
February 12, 2023
Ephesians Overview:
• Paul is the author.
Written AD 60 while in prison in Rome.
• Ephesians did not address a specific problem.
It is written for the entire body of Christ.
• Ephesians & Colossians are very similar.
Ephesians deals with the body itself – the church.
Colossians deals with the Head of the body – Jesus Christ.
• Ephesians is divided into two sections:
o Chapters 1–3 ~ speaks of who we are in Christ.
(Positional truth.)
o Chapters 4-6 ~ speaks of the application of positional truth to life.
The Theme of Ephesians:
The main character of Chapter 1 is ~ God, the Father.
The central character of Chapter 2 is ~ Jesus Christ.
The main character of Chapter 3 is ~ Holy Spirit.
God the Father is the originator of the plan ~ Jesus Christ is the executor of the plan ~ Holy Spirit is the revealer of the plan.
Jesus Christ created everything:
‘He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers.
All things were created through Him and for Him.
And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.’
Colossians 1:15-17
Jesus created everything according to the plan of the Father.
The Holy Spirit reveals the plan of the Father to us, through the Word.
Chapters 1–3 of Ephesians ~ deal with the plan of redemption and the building of the church.
The Theme of each Chapter:
• Chapter 1 ~ The Father is the originator of the plan of redemption from eternity past.
• Chapter 2 ~ Jesus Christ went to the cross and executed the plan of redemption.
• Chapter 3 ~ Holy Spirit is the revealer of the plan of redemption to man.
• Chapter 4 ~ The plan is given to the church through the fivefold ministry offices.
• Chapter 5 ~ Overcoming sin and putting the Word into use in our everyday lives.
• Chapter 6 ~ Conquest over Satan and our witness to the world are emphasized.
Ephesians 1:1–2 ~ The Greeting
• Paul, means small or little.
He occupies the highest office of Apostle.
• Paul was chosen by God, not man.
• Grace and peace are gifts to be received ~ by faith.
Grace comes before peace.
Peace comes because we understand God’s Grace.
Ephesians 1:3-14 ~ Redemption in Christ
• These verses are all one sentence in the Greek.
This is all one thought in the mind of God.
It’s His plan of redemption, In Christ.
• These verses are written in paste tense.
As believers, we have already received these blessings and they only come through Christ.
• We bless Him because He has already blessed us.
• Praise acclaims God for what He has done.
Worship acclaims Him for who He is, our great heavenly Father.
• Our blessings are spiritual and in heavenly places.
As we believe and act in faith ~ they become physical realities in our life.
• We were chosen before the foundation of the world.
We were chosen because we are In Him.
• Predestined is Strong’s Concordance G4309 and means predesign.
• For those who chose Christ ~ the Father has a predesigned plan for them.
• ‘For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son…’ Romans 8:29
• Part of the plan of predestination is for us to be adopted as sons & daughters.
As believers, we have had all ties severed from our old master, sin - and we have now become the blessed child of our heavenly Father as heirs and joint-heirs with Christ Jesus.
We encourage you this week to meditate on these verses.
The Good Lord has more He wants to reveal to you.
