Tonight, we are going to look at a few passages, and I hope we are going to continue to see that worship is not something we do, per se, but should be part of the fabric of who we are.
We are going to start with two passages of scripture:
I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the Lord;
let the humble hear and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
and let us exalt his name together!
And Exodus 20:1-6
And God spoke all these words, saying,
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
“You shall have no other gods before me.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
These passages may not seem to be connected, but I want to remind you about what we are studying. We are seeking to learn what it means to be a true worshiper. Christ has called us to worship Him, and scripture reminds us that we are to worship in Spirit and in Truth.
Two lessons ago, we looked at how we worship in Spirit and truth, and last week we looked at how we must be receivers in our worship. That we can only truly worship God when we have listened and received God’s invitation to worship, and sought to understand God for who He is.
This week our focus will be on humility. And this might seem like an easy one, right? Like, I have the lyrics of “Weird Al” Yankovic’s “Amish Paradise” in my head right now:
Think you're really righteous?
Think you're pure in heart?
Well, I know I'm a million times as humble as thou art
That is sort of how we think about a lot of things as it relates to our faith, actually. We think, “Well, I mean, I’m better than that guy, so I’m good.”
Pride can shipwreck us faster than anything else.
