It was a few weeks ago I was handed the notes from one of the children in our church. I don’t know who took the notes, but they are very good. Under words not understood was written “GENUINE”. I appreciate that our kids in our services are engaging in God’s Word, listening and learning.
To help clarify: GENUINE… something or someone who is real and honest
I was in second grade when I met a GENUINE man of God. His name was Sergeant Parks. He served at Ft. Bliss Army Base.
That man took a group of rowdy boys, and taught them to respect God’s Word, to care for it, read it as the life blood of your christian soul!
And of all the crazy things… he told us that we could and should understand what God’s Word was saying!
To this man I owe the thanks for sparking the flame that would continue to grow in my heart and life for the love of God’s Word!
Today marks the beginning of an eighteen month survey we will be taking through the scriptures… Genesis to Revelation… book by book!
Consider what the Psalmist declares in Psalm 119:160
Psalm 119:160 NASB95
The sum of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.

The Bible Is Fascinating!

It is the most sold and widely distributed book in the history
More than 168,000 copies are sold or given away daily
It also happens to be the most stolen book in the world
We have a consistent Message:
Written over 1500 years
Old and new testament (400 year gap)
Over 40 Authors
Farmers & Shepherds
Kings and laymen
Fishermen and slaves
3 Languages 3 Continents
Hebrew, Greek, & Aramaic
Now translated into over 3000 languages (over 1200 the whole scriptures)
Yet Jesus declares in Luke 16:17; 21:33
Luke 16:17 NASB95
“But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter of the Law to fail.
Luke 21:33 NASB95
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.
The Bible’s 66 books ( 39 in OT & 27 in NT ) bring to you and I the very words of God! There are over 6400 commands by God, over 8000 predictions and more than 3000 times it refers to words directly spoken by God!!!
2 Timothy 3:16-17 sums this up well!
2 Timothy 3:16–17 NASB95
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
Full of History & Scientific Information Yet...
It’s NOT a history book
Beginning of man to end of time
It’s NOT a science book
Round earth in Isaiah
Earth is in space Job
There is a Hydrologic-cycle Amos & Ecclesiastes
Air has weight Job
Blood is the source of life Leviticus
Some discover this and are amazed… but why!? The very One who breathed these words of scripture is the very One who spoke the world into existence! What an amazing opportunity awaits us as we journey through His Word together...

Our Journey Through Scripture:

We will begin in the Old Testament… “Covenant”
First five books Pentateuch where God establishes His covenant and promises a redeemer
As we continue through the historical books we will see God striving with mankind
We will trace the scarlet thread (promise of the Messiah) made known in greater ways
We will discover the deep passion and truths concerning our God and His desire for our intimacy as we look into the wisdom and poetry books
As we go through the prophetic books we will discover the depths of mans’ heart for sin and the heart of compassion, grace, mercy of this Holy and Righteous God we serve as He demonstrates His Justice!
We will observe a time of silence as we approach the New Testament… “Covenant”
Each of the gospels will reveal our Savior in unique and powerful ways
Acts will layout how Christ worked to build His church
The Epistles or letters will deliver to us instruction and care as we engage in this relationship with our Savior and with each other as the church!
Revelation completes for us the fullest picture of Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God and Lion of Judah
It will serve as a bookend to the promises given in scripture and remains our Hope and Joy as His Bride!
I want to briefly look at why scripturally we should embark on such an adventure through the scripture...

The Mandate Given

Our God is a communicating God… John 1:1;14 even giving Himself the title of “word” or “Logos” REVEALING Himself to man.
John 1:1 NASB95
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 NASB95
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Originally when God revealed to the people His Word He mandated them to know it and learn it and teach it… Deuteronomy 6:1-9
Deuteronomy 6:1–9 NASB95
“Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the Lord your God has commanded me to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you are going over to possess it, so that you and your son and your grandson might fear the Lord your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. “O Israel, you should listen and be careful to do it, that it may be well with you and that you may multiply greatly, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. “Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. “You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead. “You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
The Psalmist declares in Psalm 119:9-12 his desire for God’s Word
Psalm 119:9–12 NASB95
How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word. With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments. Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You. Blessed are You, O Lord; Teach me Your statutes.
Peter as he writes the church declares these are not tales or fables… clever myths, but rather the treasured Words of God and you and I can be sure of this truth!!! 2 Peter 1:16;19-21
2 Peter 1:16 NASB95
For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
2 Peter 1:19–21 NASB95
So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
If you and I are to know these words, follow them, pass them on, value them as true and the very oracles of God Almighty then… we must study them!

The Challenge Presented

I would like to present a challenge this morning…
As we go through this study take a book and read it, study it, learn what God has.
Also I would like to challenge you to read through the scriptures in our time together in this study.
As I prepared for this series I realized two things needed to happen:
1 ) This could not be academic in nature… however there will be learning
2 ) This needed to be relational and applicable… God’s Word will challenge your hearts
This is a study through the scriptures looking at the consistency and flow of the scriptures book by book. As we look over the Word of God we will be discovering:
who God is
communicator and truth
what God wants from us
to know Him and make Him known
how God helps us do this
the Bible you hold in your hand is His tool
why God had to send His Son (scarlet thread)
the Word became flesh
where things fit in scripture
there are reasons we have what we have in the order God has given them to us
what does this all mean for me today!?
I was in second grade when I was challenged to respect and understand God’s Word...
Young or old here today
Well Studied in scripture or a novice or beginner
God’s Word should be known and applied to our life
…and this blessed book has something for each of us. I am so excited to go on this adventure through the Bible with you as we begin this “Bibel Series!”
