Responsive Reading: Ps. 8.
Faith is not easy.
When I gave my life to Christ, I died of long slow death.
I did not want to change my evil ways and accept the path of Christ.
It took long painful periods of conviction, falling short, making mistakes over again, and crying out to God in my guilt before I surrendered.
“Societies become secular not when they dispense with religion altogether, but when they are no longer especially agitated by it.”[1]
Terry Eagleton, Culture and the Death of God (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2014), 1.
Any faith or religion or church that does not convict you of sin lacks the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said, “When the Holy Spirit comes, He will convict the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment.”
Real faith is not easy for another reason.
We have to navigate different cultures.
Kevin Van Hooser, and his book, the Pastor as public theologian, says
We walk in three publics, each with its own kind of opinion- three social realities, three locations into which pastors may speak of God and Jesus Christ: (1) the academy, (2) the church, and (3) the broader society.[5]
The academy would address the question from a historical- Christological perspective.
How do we understand the historical significance of Jesus Christ?
In some academies, Jesus is no more than a prophet.
They have stripped Jesus of power and salvation.
The academy teaches most of what Jesus said if from another source.
The academy wants a social- justice messiah; not a sin savior.
It is safe to talk about Christ in the church.
The problem is we have worn out our understanding of Jesus.
We’ve heard so much about Jesus, we gloss over mysteries and insights.
It is dangerous to talk about Jesus in the larger world.
People get offended when you talk about Jesus in public.
They feel you have imposed your world view upon them.
Matthew 10:22–23 (NIV)
You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
We have to understand Biblical Language
“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
The disciples’ answer to Jesus question reveals the world’s confusion.
The Bible is the only book in the world that uses the simplest terms to explain the greatest truths.
The Imagery is quick and often unexplained.
It is passed down but inviolate: It is not reshaped to fit the time.
The church is use to the language, but has lost the power of its meaning.
We are confronted with a watered-down, non-confrontational understanding of this prophetic title.
We no longer believe there is power in the name of Jesus.
Listen to the sentence again.
“Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
Why didn’t he say, “what are people saying about me?”
This phrase is loaded with theology, prophecy and judgment.
It means, the Son of Man has come.
We need to know biblical language, and resist its coercion if we will possess the keys of Spiritual authority.
We have to address hard truths.
Many in the ministry are seduced by the size of the crowd instead of the size of the truth they preach.
I want a pastor to argue with divine mysteries and when the light comes on, to run and tell the people the good news.
Let me tell you what I’ve wrestled with and have been captivated by for 41 years.
I hardly ever repeat a sermon, not because I am so great, but the Bible is limitless in its wonder.
Let me tell you about the Bible’s wonder.
The goal of faith is to observe the scriptures and abide in their commandments.
WHO IS THE SON OF MAN?
The Son of Man was the human-divine figure in Daniel’s prophecy.
He comes from heaven.
He can approach God like no other.
He is given authority, glory and power over heaven and earth.
He is worshipped by all nations and peoples.
His dominion will never end.
God called the prophet Ezekiel The Son of Man.
Jesus is the fulfillment of Daniel’s prophecy.
THE SON OF MAN iIS A TITLE DESCRIBING JESUS’ SONSHIP.
one writer said, “It speaks of Jesus divinity and humanity and is closely associated with his role as promised Messiah, suffering Saviour, risen Lord and coming judge and king.
It also speaks of his intimate, obedient and unique relationship with his Father and of his mission to enable people to become children of God through faith in him.
(Logos sermon starter on the subject of Jesus as son of God)
Jesus came from God, yet he never exalted himself.
To claim divinity, today is almost comical; to claim divinity inJesus day was blasphemous.
Howard Thurman said, Jesus did not want to be worshipped, but followed.
Jesus almost dismisses worship,
He dismisses his title for the sake of service.
Jesus addressed himself as the “Son of Man eighty-three times in the Gospels and at least thirteen times in John.
Conclusion
You never hear Jesus referred to as the Son of Man in today’s usage.
You hear Savior Lord, Lilly of The Valley, bright and Morning Star, but not Son of Man.
Yet he referred to himself as the Son of Man more than anyone else.
As the Son of man Jesus became the principal representative of humanity.
The forerunner of our destiny.
As the Son of man Jesus became the suffering servant.
What happens to him happens to all who believe in him.
He would suffer and die, then rise from the dead.
We are called to suffer in his name.
We have the hope to rise in eternal life.
He is the first fruits of our resurrection.
As the son of man, Jesus fulfills the law and defines our belief.
Jesus fulfilled Daniel’s prophecy.
John 3:13 (NIV)
No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.
HE IS THE LORD OF THE SABBATH.
Matthew 12:8 (NIV)
For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”
God established the Sabbath at the dawn of creation.
God ordained a day of rest.
Jesus brought us into God’s eternal rest.
For there is a rest for the people of God.
We live in the sabbath rest of Christ.
This is why we worship on the first day of the week, on Lord’s day.
He rose on the first day of the week.
As the Lord of the Sabbath, he fulfills the Sabbath.
He has power on earth to forgive sins.
Matt.
9:6
Matthew 9:6 (NIV)
But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.”
