Context - Matthew 16 - Peter Confesses
Peter confessed that Jesus is Lord - Blessed are you Simon - You will be known as Peter - the Rock
Peter confessed that Jesus is Lord - Blessed are you Simon - You will be known as Peter - the Rock
Jesus shared with Peter and the disciples what must take place (Get behind me, Satan)

Things of God verses things of Men
Deny yourself
Take up your cross
Follow me
Matthew 17:1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
Matthew 17:1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
Jesus shared with his closest disciples (Peter, James, John)
Brought them up to the mountain
Matthew 17:2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.
Matthew 17:2 There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light.
Jesus transfigured before them - the word means to be completely transformed in physical form.
Detail is important - Jesus’s face shown like the Sun.
It did not reflect any light.
If the disciples did not realize it by now, Jesus is the Son of God.
Jesus is the Christ, Jesus is Divine.
For the Gospel of John shares - He is the Light and the light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it.
Matthew 17:3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Matthew 17:3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Moses and Elijah represent to important things. They represent the old testament Law (moses) and they represent the Prophets (Elijah)
Moses and Elijah being their shared that Jesus was more than just the Law and more than a mere prophet. God is doing something NEW!
Matthew 17:4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
Matthew 17:4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
You see, peter shared that he wanted to make 3 shelters or places of sacrifice. Peter didn’t fully understand who Jesus really was. He kinda did and kinda got things right part of the time.
Peter spoke out of his own desire and his own will
He was quick to speak and slow to listen.
GOD SPEAKS DIRECTLY TO THEM…HOW POWERFUL IS THIS MOMENT!!!!
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
Oh Peter…You always seem to say the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Peter placed Jesus on the same pedestal as Moses and Elijah.
God spoke His Word from Heaven and shared the right message at the right time.
This is my Son - shares that Jesus is greater than the prophets and the Law
I love him - shares the relationship of the Father and Son
I am well pleased with him -
Shares something really important here. Some scholars have pointed out that “well pleased” is connected with the creation story. God made all things and then when God made Adam, he said he it was very good.
God is well pleased with Jesus because God is about to recreate the world through His Son. God is doing something new.
Listen to Him -
The Word here is strongly connected with discipleship.
The disciples have been hearing but not listening.
To listen to Jesus means that they will listen intently, listen to the Gentle whispers of the Holy Spirit, and then become doers of the Word–they will follow where Jesus is calling them.
Matthew 17:6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.
Matthew 17:6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.
7 But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

When we fall down before our God
When we truly understand that we are sinners
When we truly understand what it means to confess him as Lord
THAT IS WHEN ALL ELSE FADES AWAY AND WE ONLY SEE JESUS!
TURN YOUR EYES UPON JESUS…LOOK FULL IN HIS WONDERFUL FACE. AND THE THINGS OF EARTH WILL GROW STRANGELY DIM. IN THE LIGHT OF GLORY AND GRACE.
Then Jesus comes to us and says do not be afraid.
THEY LOOK UP AND ONLY SEE JESUS - IT IS ONLY CHRIST, BECAUSE THAT IS WHO GOD TOLD THEM TO LISTEN
TESTIMONY -
TESTIMONY -
"On the way home I asked the kids what made the service so good. One of my kids simply said, “It was only about Jesus.” “Wrap more words around that,” I responded. “Well dad, It feels like most churches are about Jesus and something else. Usually it’s good stuff…. But, you know, Jesus and a political thing or Jesus and a social justice thing… you know, Jesus and something else. It’s like the purpose of most services is Jesus and another thing. He’s sharing the stage in most churches.” After a pause he finished his thought, “Today we had church and it was just about Jesus.”
I'm coming back to the heart of worship, And it's all about You, It's all about You, Jesus. I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it. When it's all about You. It's all about You, Jesus.
Matthew 17:9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
Matthew 17:9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
10 The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”
10 The disciples asked him, “Why then do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”
11 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.
11 Jesus replied, “To be sure, Elijah comes and will restore all things.
12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”
12 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.”
13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
13 Then the disciples understood that he was talking to them about John the Baptist.
This was for the disciples.
It was for them to begin truly listening and truly understanding what God was doing in and through Jesus Christ
AND THE MISSION/CALL THAT GOD WAS GOING TO PLACE ON THEIR LIVES.
The disciples were called by faith and went forth in faith to the next part of their journey with Him.
Today, God asks all of us…
“Where is your focus?”
Are there things that need to be laid down at Jesus’s feet?
Are there things in this world that you want to place your tent around?
Are there things in your life that you place before God?
Folks, it is time that we all give it all to God.
Give him your life
All of it.
It includes your sin
It includes your faults
It includes your shame
It is time to let the mask fall away and just let God’s light shine upon your life
It is time to let go of all of your pain
All of your hurt
All of your fear
It is time to let go of everything that would take your focus off of Jesus.
Give everything over to Jesus. Let everything else fade away and let Christ shine!
