Review & Overview
1. Previous Study’s Review
1. Previous Study’s Review
....Last time we started a new section called “Perfection Through Resurrection”
Today is party 2 where We are still dealing with the 6th Question that the Corinthians had for Paul: Resurrection of the Dead, chp.15:
Interestingly enough Paul began this topic by talking about the Gospel... the Good News...
Because the validity of the Gospel of Jesus Christ... hinges on the Resurrection of Jesus Christ...
So Paul began this section by talking about the Importance of the Gospel:
2. Current Study’s Overview
2. Current Study’s Overview
Now in vs.12-19 Paul talks about the Importance of the Resurrection: Read.
Now these 8 verses are Crucial to Christianity... because it deals with the Resurrection, Paul talks about 2 of them
Jesus’ Resurrection & Our Resurrection... & as we’ll see they go together... they go hand & hand.
We’ve divided our text into 3 sections:
1. The Reluctancy for the Resurrection Vs.12
1. The Reluctancy for the Resurrection Vs.12
2. The Results of no Resurrection Vs. 13-19
2. The Results of no Resurrection Vs. 13-19
3. The Rebuke Involving Resurrection Vs. 33-34
3. The Rebuke Involving Resurrection Vs. 33-34
1. The Reluctancy for the Resurrection Vs. 12
1. The Reluctancy for the Resurrection Vs. 12
Apparently they did believe in Jesus’ resurrection... in fact Paul said in 1 Cor.3:1 they were in Christ...
1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.
One must believe in Jesus’ Resurrection to be saved... it is the Corner Stone of Christianity...
So while they did believe in Jesus’ Resurrection... they did not believe in their Own Resurrection...
In the 4th century BC Plato taught that spiritual things are good... & physical things are bad...
So the thought of a physical resurrection was looked down on by many... in Act 23:8 the Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection of the dead...
8 For Sadducees say that there is no resurrection—and no angel or spirit; but the Pharisees confess both.
In fact today many so called mainstream religious groups do not believe in the resurrection…
Soul Sleep: the soul is at rest & the body simply decays...
Reincarnation: the recycling theory... the Druz in Israel believe there are the same number of them today as there were many years ago...
Absorption: they go back to where ever they came from whatever higher power you believe in...
No Death: Church of Christ believe you pass from one plane to another...
Say Something Funny...
2. The Results of no Resurrection Vs.13-19, 29-32
2. The Results of no Resurrection Vs.13-19, 29-32
and Paul lists 7 results for not believing in the 2 Resurrections:
2.1 Results In No Salvation Vs. 13 & 16
2.1 Results In No Salvation Vs. 13 & 16
If there is no resurrection from the dead... then Christ is not risen ether...
And if Christ is not risen then there is no hope of Salvation...
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
25 who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.
2.2 Results In Empty Preaching Vs. 14a
2.2 Results In Empty Preaching Vs. 14a
If Christ is not risen from the dead we might as well close up shop & go home...
Because what I’ve been saying for the past 4 years is vain... it’s empty... it’s worthless... In fact my whole life is a waste...
turn Acts 2:22-41, because the Resurrection of Jesus Christ was the central theme of the Apostles... it’s a message they kept bringing up... & talking about... Read...
22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death; 24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it. 25 For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the Lord always before my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken. 26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my flesh also will rest in hope. 27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption. 28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full of joy in Your presence.’ 29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, 31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.
1 Now as they spoke to the people, the priests, the captain of the temple, and the Sadducees came upon them, 2 being greatly disturbed that they taught the people and preached in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
33 And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all.
18 Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, “What does this babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.
32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, “We will hear you again on this matter.”
6 But when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee; concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!”
21 unless it is for this one statement which I cried out, standing among them, ‘Concerning the resurrection of the dead I am being judged by you this day.’ ”
2.3 Results In Empty Faith Vs. 14b & 17a
2.3 Results In Empty Faith Vs. 14b & 17a
It’s sad that so many religious groups are putting their Faith in someone who is dead...
Muhammad, Buda, Charles Taze Russel, Joseph Smith, Mary Baker Eddy, L. Ron Hubbard...
Since Jesus Christ is the only one to be raised from the dead that has never died again...
We have Faith in His Resurrection... thus we have Hope because of His Resurrection...
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,
So the consequences for not believing in the Resurrection involves our Faith...
Faith is something we all have...
3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.
Problem is we think of faith as a quantity...
30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!
5 And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” 6 So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
but in vs.6 Jesus straightened them out, mustard seed...
APPLICATION: So it’s not about the quantity of our faith... but the object of our faith... & there is no greater object we can put our faith in then Jesus... why, because of His Resurrection...
2.4 Results In False Witnessing Vs. 15
2.4 Results In False Witnessing Vs. 15
If Christ is not raised from the dead we’re all liars... we’re all false witnesses...
And if we’re lying about that... how can anybody trust us with anything else we say as it pertains to Christianity... the Bible... God Himself...
Everything we say is a lie if Christ is not risen from the dead...
Notice that God raised Jesus from the dead... & Acts 2:24 God raised Him from the dead...
24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.
But in Rom.8:11 H.S. raised Jesus...
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
& in John 10:18 Jesus raised Himself from the dead...
18 No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.”
So who raised Jesus from the dead... God, H.S. or Jesus... 1 John 5:7 these three are one..
7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.
2.5 Results In SinsVs. 17b
2.5 Results In SinsVs. 17b
If Jesus Christ is not raised from the dead, we’re doomed for all eternity being dead because of our sins...
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
And this is a huge problem.... because we’re all born into sin...
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
But praise God that through the death, burial & Resurrection of Jesus Christ that can be fixed... Because
He Forgives us of our sins... Psl.103:12 cast your sins as far as the east is from the west...
12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
He Forgets about our sins... Heb.10:17 I will remember your iniquities no more...
17 then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.”
2.6 Results In No After Life Vs. 18
2.6 Results In No After Life Vs. 18
If Jesus is not raised from the dead... everyone who has died is simply gone... they’ve perished... But that’s not all there is...
8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
23 For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.
The moment we die our spirit goes to be with the Lord... & our body goes to the grave or furnace...
But one great and beautiful day Jesus is coming for His church... look at vs.51-53,
51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
Listen to what Jesus said in...
1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
19 “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also.
2.7 Results In Pity Vs. 19
2.7 Results In Pity Vs. 19
If our hope in Jesus is only in this life & not in the next life because of His Resurrection... we are hopeless.
Everything we’re doing as Christians in this life is worthless... pointless... meaningless... useless...
If there’s no life after this life... we might as well be like the Epicureans, eat, drink & be merry...
32 If, in the manner of men, I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what advantage is it to me? If the dead do not rise, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”
turn John 5:24-29 because there is life after death... & that is true for everyone...
24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice 29 and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.
Everyone will be resurrected... believers & non-believers alike... but there is a huge difference between the two... read.
APPLICATION: So the question for us is which resurrection will we be a part of...
3. The Rebuke Involving the Resurrection Vs. 33-34
3. The Rebuke Involving the Resurrection Vs. 33-34
15:33 The Corinthians should not be deceived on this score. Evil company corrupts good habits. Paul is referring to the false teachers who had come into the church at Corinth, denying the resurrection. The Christians should realize that it is impossible to associate with evil people or evil teachings without being corrupted by them. Evil doctrine inevitably has an effect on one’s life. False teachings do not lead to holiness.
15:34 The Corinthians should awake to righteousness and not sin. They should not be deluded by these evil teachings. Some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. This verse is commonly interpreted to mean that there are still men and women who have never heard the gospel story, and that Christians should be ashamed of their failure to evangelize the world. However, while this may be true, we believe that the primary meaning of the passage is that there were men in the fellowship at Corinth who did not have the knowledge of God. They were not true believers, but wolves in sheep’s clothing, false teachers who had crept in unawares. It was to the shame of the Corinthians that these men were allowed to take their place with the Christians and to teach these wicked doctrines. The carelessness which let ungodly people enter the assembly resulted in lowering the congregation’s whole moral tone, thus preparing an opening for the intrusion of all kinds of error.
The resurrection is a great incentive to live in righteousness... or to live righteously...
Because if there is no resurrection we might as well live like the Epicureans, eating, drinking knowing that tomorrow we die and never resurrect.
turn Titus 2:11-12, since there is a resurrection we should live righteously... which involves 2 things:
the Choice We Make: we all have to make a conscience decision to live righteously... to live godly...
It’s a choice we all must make in and of ourselves... because God loves us too much to force us...
the Power We Need: if try to live righteously in our own power, our own strength we’ll fail miserably.
11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,
That’s crazy, it’s God’s Grace that empowers us & enables us to live soberly, righteously & godly...
So how do we get Grace? It’s through Humility... 1 Peter 5:5 James 4:6 God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble...
ENDING....
