Clear Warnings
The Curse
The Flood
The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah
The Plagues of Egypt
When God judges He always does so in righteousness.
As we continue in our series on Deuteronomy, we have to keep this in mind.
As God sends his people into the land to judge and displace the people there, the previous inhabitants are marked for judgement and devoted to destruction.
The warnings of history should have lead the people to seek God but instead, they grew more and more sinful.
God as a righteous judge, who will extend mercy and grace, will judge the nations for their sins and his judgement will be complete.
Let’s turn to Deuteronomy and see what God does as he leads this new generation toward their inheritance of the promised land.
Read Deuteronomy 2:26-3:17
Holy War
God Leads because he is Sovereign
An offer of Peace
Why was an offer of Peace sent?
Hardened Hearts
The Lord gives the victory as we obey Him
Devoted to Destruction
This is a term of holy war.
To be devoted to destruction is to see the deaths of these people as an act of righteous judgment for the sins of that entire people group.
Warnings had been given.
Opportunities had been ignored.
Their hatred of God was complete and so their destruction was complete.
Their destruction stands as another warning to all the nations who had rejected God.
What were the customs?
Just look at Leviticus chapters 18-20.
Child sacrifice
Sexual immorality of every kind
Witchcraft, Divination, and Necromancy
Abuse of servants and the poor
Hatred and violence
Greed and Theft
Why were they devoted to destruction?
Because of their sin.
Why are we involved?
Because we are his people.
The Lord blesses and uses those who follow Him.
Warnings for us today
Guard against a hard heart.
For those who do not know Jesus as Savior and Lord.
For those who call on Jesus as Lord and Savior
How do I guard my heart?
