This morning we continue with our Mission Statement
If you will recall our Mission Statement
“To make Jesus KNOWN to People.”
KNOWN in an acronym
KNOWLEDGE - to have an understanding and knowledge of who Jesus is, what He did and how that affects me personally.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
Remember church it is more than just a head knowledge
It is a heart knowledge that has seeped from your head to your heart
Once you understand what Jesus did for you and you decide to make a decision for Jesus to be Lord of your life
Then Scripture says you are a
NEW CREATION - To know that because of Christ’s death on the cross and His resurrection I can have a personal relationship with Christ. And because of that relationship I am made new in Christ.
17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
That because of Christ’s death on the cross and His resurrection we can be made new.
Last week we looked at how you are not refurbished, you are not just polished but you are new.
The old spirit inside you has died with Christ and the New Spirit inside you is the Holy Spirit.
Last week we said this
Stop trying to live in the old life having repented and trusted in Jesus it wont work
Stop trying to live like a Christian while not repenting and trusting in Jesus it wont work
This morning that brings us to the O which is OBEY
OBEY - To know what Jesus said and to follow through with it. To do what Jesus says.
Church to do just what that says
Pastor Gary did a great job of creating new words we called them Rotenisms
Does anyone remember GOBEY
That word illustrates the action to the verb that OBEY is taking about
This is where the rubber meets the road in the Christian life
On the first week when we started this we talked about it being more than a head knowledge
This is the heart knowledge we are talking about
We know we are to obey Gods command but unless it has seeped to our heart
we then just justify not acting on them because it has not become the driving force in our life
See obey is a verb a verb is a word that is used to describe an action
If there is no action it is not a verb
That first week this is the difference in the heart knowledge vs head knowledge
There are people who will try and fake it and go through the motions but those people will fall away
The people that stay are the people who cant help but continue the action because it has seeped into the heart
It has become real to them
These are the people who can help but talk about Jesus and what He has done in their lives
Church there must be action to your faith in Christ
22 But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.
It is no longer enough to just know the Bible Stories
It is no longer enough to just show up anymore and put a smile on and sing some songs
It is no longer enough to just have a head knowledge church
But we must now become doers of the word
Put what we know of the Bible
Put what we have talked about of the Bible
Put what we have memorized
Church it is time that we put the Bible into action!
Like knowledge it is not just action for action sake
It is not action because it is what a church say you should be doing
It is not action to follow some list of rules or actions a group of people says you should be doing
It is action that is a result of what is inside your heart church
26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
When James writes that faith without works is dead he is not saying that
it is all works based and nothing else
He is saying that a result of your faith is action or works
And if you have faith but do not have action to or works as James says then your faith is dead
But that your faith is alive if you put it to action or have works
Some people will say that it is all about the works or the action those are the people who act just to act
This is about putting action to your faith
The action is a result of your faith in Christ
Faith and obedience are bound up in the same bundle. He that obeys God, trusts God, and he that trusts God, obeys God. He that is without faith is without works; and he that is without works is without faith. Do not oppose faith and good works to one another, for there is a blessed relationship between them; and if you abound in obedience your faith shall grow exceedingly.
Charles Spurgeon
That is what happens when it seeps down from your head to your heart
That your relationship with Christ, your faith grows as you become obedient and you become more obedient as your faith grows
Church from Jesus’s own words
15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
So the question before you right now is do you love Jesus
Is there evidence or as we christians like to call it fruit in your life that you love Jesus
See its not enough to just say you love Jesus but that your love for Him will drive you to action
So church does your love for Jesus drive you to action
Not just action for action sake but to obedience to the Word of God
So what does the word of God call us or command us to do
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 “This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
We are to Love Jesus with our entire being
We are to love Jesus with our energy, our talents, our gifts
Then we are to love others as we love ourselves
We are to love those neighbors whos dog barks all night
We are to love our coworkers who annoy us
We are to love our boss
We are to love people
And church wouldn’t you know the best way to love people is to share the greatest news of all
You can tell them with your words how Jesus loves them and what he has done in your own life
And of course we know the another thing God has commanded us to do
19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
This is the action to the relationship with Jesus
There is no justifying your way out of obeying this
When God calls you to go church you go
I understand maybe it is not physically to the nations but maybe you are called to ensure others go to the nations physically
There are other ways to go
Maybe just maybe it is to go across the street and invite your neighbors to our churches movie night
Do you understand that you and I are commanded to do this
We are commanded to share with people the hope we have in this world
We are commanded to after we share with them to disciple them as they grow in their personal relationship with Christ
Church we are to obey
Or as pastor once said we are to GOBEY
Our faith in Christ is the driving force behind the actions or works ac James calls them
Church we are commanded to be obey
And that is our call this morning
So as the band comes forward
Maybe you are here this morning and do not have a personal relationship with Christ
I would call you to be obedient and respond to the call from Christ to repent and trust in Jesus this morning
Come to the front and speak with someone who can show you through scripture how you can be a new creature this morning
Or maybe this morning you have been just going through the motions doing just enough to get by
This morning God has called you to obedience would you be obedient and answer that call
Or maybe you need to spend sometime in prayer this morning about the fact you have not been obedient
Or maybe just need to spend sometime at the altar in prayer
The altar is open
