Obedience to Jesus
Sermon Text:1 John 5 (NKJV)
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one. If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God. Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death. We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
1. Whosoever Believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God.
Again, we are looking at the Three Commandments one more time as requirements that are expected of those in Covenant with Jesus.
Confess the Yahweh’s only begotten Son Jesus as your Savior, King and Lord; and believe that he in the propitiation for our sins against Yahweh and our fellow brothers and mankind. Then work out your salvation be daily walking in God with Holy Spirit guiding you.
Love( Agape, Charity) The Lord God Yahweh with all your heart , mind ,soul and strength.
Love your neighbor as yourself
2. Testimony of Jesus
This is the witness of Jesus on earth. He was born(water) and died(Blood) and he was raised in resurrection power.( Holy Spirit). Or it could mean witness when he was Baptized, shed his blood to enforce new Messianic covenant , with The Holy Spirit on earth verifying and witnessing in us Jesus is the promised Christ and only begotten Son of Yahweh Father God.
Then we have Heaven, who witness’s Jesus is the Messiah by the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit. Like John says these three are the highest authority of witness to Jesus being the Messiah, Christ, and the Only Begotten Son of God.
Young’s Literal Translation (Chapter 5)
6 This one is he who did come through water and blood—Jesus the Christ, not in the water only, but in the water and the blood; and the Spirit it is that is testifying, because the Spirit is the truth, 7because three are who are testifying (in the heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit, and these—the three—are one; 8and three are who are testifying in the earth), the Spirit, and the water, and the blood, and the three are into the one. 9If the testimony of men we receive, the testimony of God is greater, because this is the testimony of God that He hath testified concerning His Son.10 He who is believing in the Son of God, hath the testimony in himself; he who is not believing God, a liar hath made Him, because he hath not believed in the testimony that God hath testified concerning His Son; 11and this is the testimony, that life age-during did God give to us, and this—the life—is in His Son; 12he who is having the Son, hath the life; he who is not having the Son of God—the life he hath not. 13These things I did write to you who are believing in the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that life ye have age-during, and that ye may believe in the name of the Son of God.
3. Subject of Sin
Amen
What an incredible passage, if my fellow brother is caught up in a sin that does not cause him to lose his faith in Jesus and only being basically deceived, we can pray for them and they can be given life. However we are to keep ourselves out of sin. Many of us need Holy Spirit to help us not to be led into temptation that leads to sin. Added are verse 16 in many translated versions to see that this point in 1John is consistent in all versions.
Complete Jewish Bible (Chapter 5)
14 This is the confidence we have in his presence: if we ask anything that accords with his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—then we know that we have what we have asked from him.16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin that does not lead to death, he will ask; and God will give him life for those whose sinning does not lead to death. There is sin that does lead to death; I am not saying he should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.18 We know that everyone who has God as his Father does not go on sinning; on the contrary, the Son born of God protects him, and the Evil One does not touch him.19 We know that we are from God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the Evil One.20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment, so that we may know who is genuine; moreover, we are united with the One who is genuine, united with his Son Yeshua the Messiah. He is the genuine God and eternal life.21 Children, guard yourselves against false gods!
Young’s Literal Translation (Chapter 5)
14 And this is the boldness that we have toward Him, that if anything we may ask according to his will, He doth hear us, 15and if we have known that He doth hear us, whatever we may ask, we have known that we have the requests that we have requested from Him. 16If any one may see his brother sinning a sin not unto death, he shall ask, and He shall give to him life to those sinning not unto death; there is sin to death, not concerning it do I speak that he may beseech; 17all unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not unto death.18 We have known that every one who hath been begotten of God doth not sin, but he who was begotten of God doth keep himself, and the evil one doth not touch him; 19we have known that of God we are, and the whole world in the evil doth lie; 20and we have known that the Son of God is come, and hath given us a mind, that we may know Him who is true, and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ; this one is the true God and the life age-during! 21Little children, guard yourselves from the idols! Amen.
Modern English Version (Chapter 5)
If anyone sees his brother commit a sin which does not lead to death, he shall ask, and He shall give him life. This is for those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I do not say that he should pray for it. 17 *All wrongdoing is sin, but there is a sin that does not lead to death.18 *We know that whoever is born of God does not keep on sinning. But whoever has been born of God guards himself, and the wicked one cannot touch him
Conclusion
Consistent throughout 1 John we have these three commandments with Promise. His commandments are:
Believe on the Lord Jesus as your Messiah( Christ ) and believe in the NAME of Gods only Begotten son as our Lord, Savior and King.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.
Love your neighbor as your self.
Living a constant and obedient lifestyle in God, in keeping with Gods commandments, allows us to pray with confidence and we know God hears us and we will have what we ask for in JESUS NAME. Let that sink deep within our heart.
Now lets go back to this incredible truth that John shares with us the church of Jesus, 1John3:21-22 “Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.”
So if we love our brothers and we love God with all our hearts, as well as confess Jesus as Our Messiah and believe in our heart Jesus is Lord Messiah, we can ask God to restore our brother and God will give him LIFE, as long as our brother did not sin unto death, that is being reprobate or dead spiritually because of blaspheming the Holy Spirit, as well as not forgiving your brothers in Christ and turning from love towards bitterness thus denying God , we are not abiding in God. In other words living in death and speaking lies about your condition in Christ Jesus, John said do not pray for them who have sinned unto death.
So ending on a positive note, let us dwell and contemplate this wonderful promise spoken to us by Apostle John. Love my fellow Christians so deeply, that when we see them in a sin or habitual sinful lifestyle, instead of gossiping or slandering their good name, we would go into prayer asking God to restore them and give them life. A loving intercessory prayer instead of poison from our mouth. That is my prayer for all of us.
