1 Samuel 18:1–11 KJV 1900
1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house. 3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. 5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants. 6 And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick. 7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands. 8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? 9 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward. 10 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand. 11 And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.
What do we do when our dreams do not come to fruition
The sun was setting on Saul’s reign
1 Samuel 13:14 KJV 1900
14 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee.
The prophet tells Saul he will lose his kingdom
The Lord sought him a man
David was anointed
A transfer of power would take place
Just because God says he will do something doesn’t mean
10 years
Psalms gives us insight
Hope despair
supernatural victory
then there was discouragement that led to him thinking
When we hurt emotionally
We saw last week how David went to work with the philistine kingdom
Jonathan is an amazing man in the Bible
Jonathan who would in normal circumstances be able to succeed Saul His father and be king of Israel understood that God had a different plan.
Chapter 18 Jonathan covenanted
1 Samuel 18:4 KJV 1900
4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.
Jonathan, contrary to his environment, contrary to wrong leadership, contrary to nature, was able to humble himself before the Lord
Position is not what we seek
A name
Authority
God’s pleasure is for what we should strive
Saul would turn into a person who would be willing to kill someone who was innocent in order to retain his authority
Jonathan was a man who was willing to give a kingdom to someone for God’s pleasure and glory
David received the hate of a king
and the love of a prince
Saul acted through the power of the flesh
Jonathan followed the spirit
Problems in our relationships can bring us to choosing one of two paths
Pride - I am right therefore everyone who apposes me is worthy of shame
I do not need to change it is everyone else who has the problem
Pride fights for rights rather than humbly serving others and yielding our rights so that others can be blessed
Humility - God is right and I will humble myself to his will and allow Him to work through the events of my life and the authorities in my life to help me grow
How we respond to circumstances that are uncomfortable
How we react to people who are annoying, or belligerent, or even abusive tells us whether we are operating in the flesh or in the spirit
Whether you walk
Pride
Humility
Conflict or peace
Rights or service
Whose Kingdom
Whose Church - This church
Whose Marriage
Whose Children
Whose money
Would you say “I Give everything To the Lord”
The Shortcomings of a King
1. A Jealous Envy Rather Than Humility
Jealousy and envy are two emotions that are often used interchangeably, but they are distinct from each other in important ways.
Jealousy refers to a feeling of insecurity, fear, or concern over the loss of something or someone that one values, such as a relationship, an opportunity, or a possession. Jealousy is typically triggered by the perception that a threat to one's valued relationship or possession is imminent or has already occurred. For example, a person might feel jealous if they believe that a romantic partner is showing interest in someone else.
Envy, on the other hand, refers to the desire to have something that someone else possesses. Unlike jealousy, envy doesn't necessarily involve a fear of losing something one values, but rather a desire to acquire something that one lacks. Envy can arise from comparing oneself to others and feeling discontent with what one has. For example, a person might feel envious of a friend's success or material possessions.
Jealousy is an emotion focused on the loss of what one values, while envy is an emotion focused on the desire to acquire what one lacks.
Samuel anointed Saul to be the one that would help protect the people of Israel
1 Samuel 10:10 KJV 1900
10 And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.
The blessing of God - Holy Spirit power
1 Samuel 10:22 KJV 1900
22 Therefore they inquired of the Lord further, if the man should yet come thither. And the Lord answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff.
Saul is being looked for - he was hiding
Empowered
Prophetic

Tall
Victorious
No one doubted that he should be king
The anointed or the leadership was lost
1 Samuel 18:7–8 KJV 1900
7 And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands. 8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
Leadership is what it should be when others are growing and excelling past you.
Envy and Jealosy
God resisteth the proud
You could be right and full of pride and God will resist you because of the pride
God can help a humble person
2. Saul Forgot To Whom The Kingdom Belonged
When we forget who we belong to
who our things belong to
When you think it’s yours it will cause you fear if you lose it
He became concerned with his reputation and what people thought about him more than what the Lord knew about him
He had a personality disorder - Angry, filled with rage
Unpredictable, off balance
James1:8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
Saul on one hand was seeking David to kill him
Saul on the other hand would tell David that he would be king someday
James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

Fearful bondage and insecurity happens in the life
1 Samuel 19:6 KJV 1900
6 And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul sware, As the Lord liveth, he shall not be slain.
Promises Jonathan his son
1 Samuel 26:21 KJV 1900
21 Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.
Then Saul tries again to kill David
Saul didn’t want to wait on God
Accepted an envious jealous spirit
Became double minded
Double minded leads to very dark places
1 Samuel 28:7 KJV 1900
7 Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at En-dor.
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly
When you don’t understand who you belong to
When you become envious and jealous; something will break inside your being that only God will be able to fix as you seek Him in humility
Saul would not see it God’s way
He was determined to go against God
He was afraid of God’s will
1 Samuel 18:8 KJV 1900
8 And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?
Saul came to a place that he looked at David:
The David that slew the giant
The David that served him as king
The David that soothed him song
The David that Jonathan loved
The David that he gave authority to lead his army
The David that he gave his daughter to marry
Is the David that will steal his Kingdom the one he must destroy
David though was not trying to take the kingdom
David didn’t allow what was said about him to make him proud
David instead trusted God for God’s timing
God’s plan
God’s will
Waiting on God is one of the greatest lessons to learn
The speed at which someone gets to where we want
The things that people have
The positions that others have
The reputation that another has
It’s easy to become impatient
We don’t like pain
We don’t enjoy problems
We don’t like uncertainty
We don’t understand injustice
We get impatient, be careful
It’s painful to feel like you’re living in the shadow of someone we perceive as greater than us.
I know what it’s like to serve and feel like there is a certain process by which things should happen.
Envy
Pro 14:30 A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones.
Rom 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Jas 3:16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
Confess all envy tonight
Another’s job
Another’s family
Another’s spouse
Another’s house
Another’s position
The destruction
We are not humble until we are thankful:
I’m glad he has a better house
I’m glad David killed that giant
I’m glad for you when you have good
What we have God knows, what we don’t have God knows
Jealosy has no place in our heart
humility steps aside
Pride tells us we are better
3. Self will Rather than Faith
Saul “If I could just kill David all my problems would be solved.”
Manipulation rather than faith
