DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING RESIDENCY TEACHING
When you hear the word discipleship what comes to mind? Experiences with discipleship Describe someone who has discipled you
Character traits, what did that look like? Break into groups and give me a description of what healthy discipleship would look like.
Confrontation? Usually people always miss this.
WHY DO WE MAKE DISCIPLES? THE PURPOSE
WHY DO WE MAKE DISCIPLES? THE PURPOSE
Jesus commanded it It is the way God has changed nations and communities No other way Acts 6:7-number of what grew? Not converts, but disciples. The word the New Testament uses to describe a Christian is a “disciple”. Someone who follows Jesus. It is how the Spirit forms us into Christ
“Live to impress crowds but not usher in the kingdom”
Goal of all discipleship? What is it?
How would you describe the goal of discipleship?
Apprenticeship. We are apprentices of Jesus learning the Jesus trade. The way of Jesus.
Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.
my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you!
Cooperation with the Holy Spirit to see others formed into the image of Jesus.
Holy Spirit convicts of sin Jeff Vanderstelt, not always but He does this!
Important! Who are making disciples of? Not ourselves, but of Jesus.
COMMON OBSTACLES
COMMON OBSTACLES
What are some obstacles we face when it comes to discipleship?
Busy
Algorithm of YouTube
Attention economy. So we are battling against this as competition
Netflix said their biggest competitor? Sleep.
Can’t find anyone willing
Feel incompetent
Sometimes the biggest obstacle in discipleship is not others but it’s ME. Why?
My identity isn’t rooted in Christ. How will fear of man stop us from making disciples? I don’t believe God actually wants to use me. There is no perfect “discipler”. Only Jesus. Only The Holy Spirit.
We are just vessels that God uses to point others to Jesus. Do our lives matter? Absolutely. But we are not called to perfection. How does Acts describe the apostles?
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated, common men, they were astonished. And they recognized that they had been with Jesus.
First, we have to root this out in our lives.
Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.
Disciple means discipline….we can’t be a disciple maker without discipline in our own lives
Pride and despair can be sins that keep me from making disciples. Pride says that I’m too busy to invest in others. I don’t need to do that. Despair says that I am not able to make disciples. MY life is too messed up to help anyone follow Jesus. The Gospel deals with both of those. The Gospel reminds the sin of pride, that
Prodigals
or ex-Christians, do not identify themselves as Christian despite having attended a Protestant or Catholic church as a child or teen, or having considered themselves to be Christian at some time.
Nomads
or lapsed Christians, identify themselves as Christian but have not attended church during the past month. The vast majority of nomads haven’t been involved with a faith community for six months or more.
Habitual churchgoers
describe themselves as Christian and have attended church at least once in the past month, yet do not have foundational core beliefs or behaviors associated with being an intentional, engaged disciple.
Resilient disciples: are Christians who (1) attend church at least monthly and engage with their church more than just attending worship services; (2) trust firmly in the authority of the Bible; (3) are committed to Jesus personally and affirm he was crucified and raised from the dead to conquer sin and death; and (4) express desire to transform the broader society as an outcome of their faith
HOW?
HOW?
WHO?
How do we disciple someone? From start to finish.
Start with prayer(Jesus spent all night praying)
Why is this important? Start with where to find someone?
Who do we look for?
Humble/Hungry FatC people
I wouldnt do it one on one-groups of at least 3 or more. Learn better that way.
Faithful, accountable, teachable, courageous. Not always going to be like this but Jesus allowed people to walk away from Him if they weren’t willing to follow Him. Jesus did not go out and try to beg people to follow Him or to sell them on the good stuff. He simply laid out the Gospel and called them to a life of obeying Him. He didn’t try to make it easier. Discipleship is different than mercy ministry. Discipleship is not a co-dependent relationship.
Discipleship is committed individuals growing to be like Christ. I can’t think of anyone!
Do circles of influence exercise. Look at how many people are in your life. Start there. I think it’s always best to find someone you already share life with. Quantity of Time and Quantity of Force HOW?
It says He desired them to be “with Him”.
Discipleship takes time. So simple but like the Gospel it takes our whole lives. That’s the invitation
Daily, weekly, monthly plan
Texting daily? Weekly meeting? Monthly having a meal or doing something fun together. Time 1 These 2:8 (what do you see here) What do you do when you get together?
Christ centered. Remember imitate Him. 4 Ways to Learn
Information Only
Passive Only-reading a book Can be transformational But least effective NOT JUST INFORMATION TRANSFER. LOOKING FOR TRANSFORMATION Information with Interaction
Classroom setting Hypothetical not practical Observation with Interaction
Go to a game Watching videos Seeing something with your eyes that you can interact Baseball players with their coach who are watching videos of themselves hitting, ect. Maybe we go to a conference and see someone showing us how to share the Gospel on the streets. Really helpful. Getting closer. Implementation:
Doing it with someone coaching You have to do life together. Minister together.
M.A.W.L
Model,Assist, Watch, Leave(Multiply)
Talk about GC multiplication Watched me pray, then they prayed Went and prayed for people in the streets Saw me parent my kids my marriage, etc How does this work at work place?
We plant and water but God gives the growth.
Discipling movements
B.L.E.S.S.
BEGIN WITH PRAYER
LISTEN TO THEIR STORY
EAT TOGETHER
SERVE
SHARE YOUR STORY(GOSPEL)
Talk about banking…
All opportunities to begin this process. Start with your people of influence. What would be the next step?
Maybe it’s salvation, so just pray and be a faithful witness but you still need to be discipled and disciple. What we are saying is discipleship is not just giving someone a book, or giving them a YouTube link, it’s giving them access into our lives and helping them live that out.
“I See in You” Conversations. I see this in you. Call people to that. Be a Barnabas. Huge! EXAMPLES. NEED A TON OF CLEAR EXAMPLES.
Todd Blackhurst(took me to a conference with Chris Tomlin, John Piper, McArthur, I had no clue Chris Failla(made some dumb decisions)
SOMEONE WHO DID THIS FOR ME. Chris Failla
Scott, Joel, Don. Brad At one point I had someone that I saw 4 times in one week that I was discipling.
GC, d Group, Sunday church, and ministry practice. That’s a lot but it’s a great context for discipleship!
Pick a book of the Bible and go through it slowly asking these questions
What does this say about God?
What does this say about me?
How does this point to Jesus?
How should obey this?
Meet again next time and hold each other accountable
Accountability questions you could ask(handout) DISCIPLING CULTURE
Do the grid, high invitation high challenge
Bored, beat down etc Look at Matthew 16:13-23
Follow me, take up your cross. Examples of this
In a nutshell – Dallas Theological Seminary studied the cases of 200 pastors/leaders who had all fallen due to sexual immorality in the previous years and found 4 things consistent with EVERY ONE of the situations. The pastors/leaders incorrectly addressed THE FOUR STAY. THEY DID NOT:
1) STAY IN – the Word of God
2) STAY NEAR – another brother or two (in a committed, vulnerable relationship)
3) STAY AWAY – from the opposite sex
4) STAY ALERT – all 200 did not believe it would ever happen to them
This is why we disciple. It is so vital to the kingdom of God.
