*HOLINESS*

*1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 (NIV) \\ \\ *
*23 **May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.
May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.
*

AS THIS VERSE SUGGESTS,
I WANT TO TALK ABOUT   SANCTIFICATION TODAY.
*Introduction:*
*WHEN WE FIRST GET SAVED*,
OUR SINS ARE FORGIVEN
AND WE RECEIVE A MEASURE OF GOD’S HOLY SPIRIT,

BUT THERE COMES A TIME IN OUR CHRISTIAN WALK WHEN WE REALIZE THAT WE’RE LACKING
IN OUR ABILITY TO LIVE THE CHRIST LIKE, LIFE.
/IT’S AT THIS POINT THAT SOME PEOPLE GIVE UP AND WALK AWAY FROM GOD./

*WE NEED SOMETHING MORE.*
THAT SOMETHING MORE IS WHAT WE CALL
BEING SANCTIFIED TO GOD.

\\ * *
*HERE IS THE TYPICAL*
*THE LIFE OF A CHRISTIAN*

*STAGE 1; SALVATION*
If you are a Christian
then there was a time when you realized that you were headed to hell and your only hope was to have your sins forgiven.
So you asked God to forgive your sins
and because Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God chose to take your place on the cross and die for your sins,
because He did this,
He was able to take your sins away from you.

*STAGE 2; THE HONEYMOON PERIOD*
For a time after you were saved it was like heaven on earth.
God held you close
and it was like you were a million miles away from your old life.
1.
It was so easy to pray.
2.    When you got your bible out, you were able to open it to just the right spot and find just what you needed.
3.    God was parenting you because you were a new baby Christian.
And God knows how to take care of His children.
\\ * *
*STAGE 3; BEGINNING TO GROWING UP*
But there came a day when it seemed that God had stepped back a little.
1.    Just opening your bible to any old place didn’t seem to work as well.
2.    It wasn’t so easy to pray as it used to be.
3.
And horror of horrors you began fighting with temptation.
4.    And not only fighting with temptation but sometimes losing the battle.
5.
You became a Yo-Yo Christian.
You were up today and down tomorrow.
You weren’t able to live a consistently sinless life.
6.
You wanted to live pure but something kept drawing you back into sinful behavior.
*STAGE 4; THE PROBLEM*

*Romans 7:15-20 (NIV) \\ **15 **I do not understand what I do.
For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.
16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.
17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.
18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.b
For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.
19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.
20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
*

The problem is that even though you’ve had your sins forgiven,
the *ROOT CAUSE* of your sinful behavior is still present in you.
It’s the same *ROOT CAUSE* that caused you to sin before you were saved.
That *ROOT CAUSE* is your *Selfish Sinful Nature*.
*/MADE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD/*
When Adam and Eve were first created in the Garden of Eden,
they were made in the Image of God.
Their Nature was created correctly.
It was /(perfectly Crafted)/ for serving God.
With their original nature, it was an easy thing to serve and obey God.
But when Adam and Eve CHOSE to disobey God
and ate the forbidden fruit,
then their nature was twisted, it was bent,
it was changed into a nature that would easily choose to do the wrong.
Doing wrong now became as easy to do, as doing right had been before.
*STAGE 5; THE PASS DOWN*
From Adam and Eve, this Selfish Sinful Nature has been passed down to us from generation to generation.
/(PAUSE)/
*I don’t have to prove this to you.
*
*All you have to do is look inside yourself* and you will know that it’s true.
*Every one of us has this tendency to do the wrong and not the right.
*

*Our natural bend is selfish and sinful.
*
And it’s true for us, even after we’ve had our sins forgiven.
*STAGE 6; THE ANSWER*
We just don’t have the will power to live a pure life before God in our own strength.
*NO ONE can do it.
*
But God has provided a way.
*It’s called the Highway of Holiness and *
this is how *Dwight Moody* got on the highway.

*2230 Moody’s Experience*
One day in New York—what a day!
I can’t describe it!
I seldom refer to it!
It is almost too sacred to name!
I can only say God revealed Himself to me!
I had such an experience of love that I had to ask Him to stay His hand!
I went to preaching again.
The sermons were no different.
I did not present any new truth.
Yet hundreds were converted.
I would not go back to where I was before that blessed experience.
—Dwight L. Moody

*SANCTIFICATION IS THE ANSWER*
We come to God in the same humility that we had when we bowed before Him and asked for forgiveness of our sins.
Then we ask Him to remove that Selfish Sinful Nature from our heart.
When we do this in faith, believing,
He comes and pulls that ugly sinful nature out by the roots.
