What does it mean to be covered by the blood?
It is something that within church culture, you hear people speak on from time to time.
I. Understanding the concept of blood.
A. Old Testament Theology (Life is in the blood)
Genesis 9:4–5 NLT
But you must never eat any meat that still has the lifeblood in it. “And I will require the blood of anyone who takes another person’s life. If a wild animal kills a person, it must die. And anyone who murders a fellow human must die.
There is life in the blood. This is one of the first lessons that the LORD teaches mankind. The Lord forbids the eating or drinking of blood in the Old Testament scriptures.
Flesh that still has blood in it should not be eaten. It was to be drained out of the flesh and not eaten nor drank because life is in the blood.
Leviticus 17:14 KJV
For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.
Life is in the blood. Anatomy teaches us that if our blood supply is cut off we die. If the blood in your body fails to reach certain parts of your body, that body part dies. Why? Because there is life in the blood.
Blood was used to consecrate and purify the things of God:
Exodus 24:8 KJV
And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.
Leviticus 8:15 KJV
And he slew it; and Moses took the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured the blood at the bottom of the altar, and sanctified it, to make reconciliation upon it.
Once a year the high priest went into the Holiest of All, to purify the sanctuary with blood, and to offer the blood of the sacrifice for the atoning (covering) of sin for the people.
But listen to what the writer of Hebrews records:
Hebrews 9:11–12 KJV
But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Hebrews 9:11–12 NLT
So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven, which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world. With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.
Thank God I’m Covered by the Blood!
Symbolically and Spiritually, the Bible that life is in the blood......life is in the blood.....life is in the blood.
The LORD commissioned the use of blood to deliver his people out of bondage. I said the LORD commissioned blood.....to bring about the deliverance of his people out of slavery.
The LORD told Moses to kill a lamb, and take the blood of the lamb and post it on the lintel of the doors.......and when the death angel passes through the land of Egypt, when he sees the blood.....he will passover.
They passed from death to live because of the blood.
They were given a new life because of the blood.
They were delivered because of the blood!
And that is why Hebrews 9:14 says:
Hebrews 9:14 KJV
How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Hebrews 9:14 NLT
Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.
If the blood of a lamb could cause them to pass from death to life.
If the blood of a lamb could give the Israelites a fresh start and a new life.
If the blood of a lamb had the power to deliver them from bondage.
HOW MUCH MORE SHALL THE BLOOD OF CHRIST!!!!!
II. Understanding the blood of Jesus.
A. New Testament Theology
John 6:53–54 KJV
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
B. Jesus Shed his blood for the remission of sin.
The word shed means to “pour out”.
Jesus shed, he poured out his blood so that your sins could be forgiven you.
We must understand that the blood in and of itself is no mystical agent. It simply means that when Jesus shed his blood.....it means that he died for us. It was symbolic of the type of death he died in order to satisfy the payment for the penalty of sin.
The price is that an innocent man who knew no sin and did no wrong, died in our place.
The price for our sins was that the blood of animals, nor the blood of any human born into sin would suffice. The LORD had to put on human flesh, because no one in earth, or under the earth, nor in heaven was found worthy but The LORD himself. He who is good, He who is just, He who is Holy.....came and died for our sins.
C. The reason why your sins are forgiven you is not by an action on your part. I know that we believe in confession of sins and repentance, I know we believe in water baptism in Jesus’ name. But the fact of the matter is no.....amount of words spoken and pleaded to God can remove sin. Yes you need to be baptized in Jesus’ name, but when you go down in the water, the water is not what washes your sins.
There is only one thing that washes away your sins!
1 Corinthians 6:11 KJV
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
1 Corinthians 6:11 NLT
Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Then another scripture declares:
1 Peter 1:18–19 KJV
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
1 Peter 1:18–19 NLT
For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.
The Lord saved you, he redeemed you and paid a ransom for you. The only time that you pay a ransom is when you are held hostage by something.
We were held hostage by a life of sin, we were held hostage to the devil, some of us were held hostage by bad habits, others of us may have been held hostage by addictions, some of us were held hostage by drugs and alcohol..........BUT THANK GOD FOR THE BLOOD!!! THE BLOOD OF JESUS......IT GAVE ME LIFE......THE BLOOD OF JESUS......IT FREED ME JUST LIKE IT FREED THE ISRAELITES FROM SLAVERY!!!! I WAS A SLAVE TO SIN.....I WAS DEAD IN MY TRESPASSES AND SIN........BUT HIS BLOOD, HIS DEATH, HIS BURIAL, HIS RESURRECTION GAVE ME LIFE!!!!
WHEN I BELIEVED THE GOSPEL......WHEN I BELIEVED THAT JESUS DIED AND ROSE AGAIN, WHEN I BELIEVED HE DIED FOR THE REMISSION OF MY SIN.......WHEN I REALIZE AND ACCEPT THE FACT THAT HE DIED FOR MY SIN......HE PAID THE PRICE FOR MY SIN.......IT GAVE ME LIFE!!!
NOW I HAVE A NEW LIFE IN HIM.....NOW I HAVE ETERNAL LIFE TO LOOK FORWARD TO!!!
THANK GOD I’M COVERED BY THE BLOOD!!!
Have you been redeemed?
III. Covered by the blood.
A. I’m covered by the blood.
You need to understand what it truly means to be covered by the blood.
It doesn’t mean that we physically have the blood of Jesus on us.
It is not an abstract saying in which abstractly we have the blood of Jesus on us.
When I’m covered by the blood, it is just like when you go and sit down at a restaurant, order a meal for your family, only to find out you left your wallet at home. Nobody at the table has the funds to pay for your meal. But a random stranger says......”I see you are having a hard time there......let me help you since you can’t pay the bill.....I’ll pay it for you.”
That individual covered your dining expenses!!!
Romans 5:9 KJV
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Hebrews 10:19 KJV
Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
I enter into the presence of God, not by my goodness, not by my merit, not by my intellect, not by my fancy prayers, I enter into the holiest, I enter into the presence of God, by or because of the blood of Jesus!!! I’m able to enter because “I’m Covered By the Blood!”
If you believe in Jesus!!! If you trust in his work that he did on Calvary, if you trust that his blood works, and you put your faith in what Jesus done for you, YOU DON’T HAVE TO HAVE SOMEONE TO GO IN ON YOUR BEHALF.......YOU CAN TALK TO THE LORD FOR YOURSELF!!!!
DO YOU HAVE BOLDNESS TO ENTER INTO THE PRESENCE OF GOD BECAUSE OF WHAT JESUS DID FOR YOU?
That’s the reason why when we pray we say “Father in the name of Jesus Christ!” I’m not coming to you on my own name, I’m not coming to you on my own reputation, because my own name and my own reputation is shot, I have a sinful reputation.
But Father I come to you in the name of your son Jesus Christ......I’m not perfect but Jesus is perfect! I’m sinful but Jesus is sinless. And thank you LORD God that when I come in your presence, you see me as washed, you see me as whole, you see me forgiven......and it is all possible because of the blood of Jesus Christ!!!
Revelation 12:11 KJV
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
Life is in the blood.
I plead the blood? What does that mean? plea-bargaining
