Title: He’s a Way Out of No Way
Introduction:
This month, I want to highlight where some of us got our FIRSTlessons in theology; as well as LIVEDlessons in theology. These lessons were BIG MAMA’S THEOLOGY! She may not have finished the 3rdgrade, but Big Mama knew God; Big Mama may not have finished high school, but Big Mama knew God. Big Mama may not have finished college, but Big Mama knew God. Big Mama may have never heard of the word theology, but she knew God. Big Mama could not even pronounce the word “theology”, but she knew God. It took me some time to get it, but the declarations and decrees that Big Mama made were evidence that Big Mama knew God. Declarations and decrees like:
● He’s a Shelter in the Time of Storm
● He’s a Way Out of No Way
● He May Not Come When You Want Him, But He’s Always on Time
● He’s a Heart Fixer and a Mind Regulator
This morning, we will focus on “HE’S A WAY OUT OF NO WAY!”
#1 – Fear Ye Not, Don’t Be Scared! (13a)
● Verses 13 and the following are in response to the prior verses - 10-12!
● (do not) be afraid, be frightened, i.e., be in a state of feeling great distress, and deep concern of pain or unfavorable circumstance; be intimidated1
Fear has a tendency to either immobilize men or seriously affect their activity [slow them down].[1]
Deuteronomy 28:13-14, “And the Lord shall make you the head and not the tail, and you only shall be above, and you shall not be underneath, if you will listen to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I charge you today, to observe them carefully, and do not turn aside from any of the words which I command you today, to the right or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.”
● Jesus Christ, by his atoning death, resurrection, and heavenly intercession for believers, is the unique liberator from fear[2]
2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear (timidity), but of power, and love, and a sound mind (discipline).”
#2 – Stand Still/Firm… (13b)
1. stand, i.e., be in a standing position, implying one stays in the same position for an extended period of time (Ex 2:4); 2. resist, formally, stand firm, be in a state of firm inner strength as an extension of being in a standing position and not moving or running away 2
o See – visible perception; be aware of God’s handiworks…
o Salvation of the Lord – it comes from a term that has to do with room or space. The people were under great pressure, squeezed between the waters before them and the armies of Pharoah behind them. SALVATION would relieve the pressure in a most dramatic way/literal way. This salvation was to come from God…
o WATCH GOD WORK!!
o HE’S A WAY OUT OF NO WAY!!!
o You will not see these Egyptians no more!
#3 – Hold Your Peace (14)
Hold your peace - not take action, be still, be silent, be quiet, become deaf, i.e., to not take an action in response to a request, as a figurative extension of not having the faculty of hearing, or not having the faculty of speech; take no action, be still (Ex 14:14); make no moves; 2. be silent, not say a word, hold the tongue, i.e., not use the faculty of speech.3
Conclusion 14:21-22
Ex. 14:21-22
