In this ethical section, each command has something to put off and something to put on, with a reason or motive. This is the pattern of vv 22-24: Put off the old self . . . be renewed in the spirit of your minds . . . put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 1. Put Off Corrupt Words (v 29a); 2. Put On Good Words (v 29b); 3. Give Grace with Your Words (v 29c); 4. Do Not Grieve the Holy Spirit (v 30).
