1. Jesus is God

This is the first of 7 “sign” miracles that John records in his Gospel account
For John, the signs answer the question of “Who is Jesus?”
John’s case is that Jesus is the Christ (emphasizes the deity)
John 20:31 “but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
The specific answer example here:
What is revealed about Jesus is that through Christ all things were created (water to wine)
Jesus being God has power over all the material universe
This miracle is unique given the lack of material used to make wine
This is not just merely a party trick that Jesus does with no reason or symbolism attached.

2. Life without Christ is a life without [joy]

wine = joy
joy that Christ provides is eternal
Life without Christ is a life without eternal joy
doesn’t mean it doesn’t begin “until eternity (after death)” but starts “now” & for foever
Satan often suggests that God withholds good gifts from his people.
Jesus exposes Satan as a liar here.
Jesus provides abundant & eternal joy
no wine at wedding = shame
no savior = shame
Jesus provides salvation, redemption, and abundant, over-flowing joy that is eternal where shame doesn’t co-exist

God is good

Think about the goodness & the grace of God in your life
What will your response be?
The text tells us that the disciples “believed εἰς him”
of course they believed before, but after seeing the grandeur & grace of Jesus, “they so believed that they submerged themselves in Jesus” // Spurgeon
This should be the constant and consistent response from Christians:
God does great things in our lives and we just believe in Him all over again.
Constantly in awe of him
Submerging ourselves “into” him
You’ve been invited to the wedding feast to enjoy eternal joy; this starts now by a life with Christ
life with christ = repentance & faith
