Our scriptures begin with the book of Genesis, this book opens with a statement… BEFORE TIME “In the beginning GOD...” (outside of time) John 1:1-3 declares some things about this God who is communicating with us!
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
The opening words of Genesis 1:1 make a BOLD STATEMENT about our God! He is outside of time!
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1-2 record for us how all things came into place… “God Spoke”… the Word of God created! We have six days of creation recorded and on DAY 6… comes the pinnacle of His creative acts… Genesis 1:26-28
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
The rest of Genesis... and the Bible for that matter, will focus on God and His passion for, & interactions with and on behalf of these “humans” or “Adams” that He has created!!!
The Book is Genesis: Holman states… “The English title is based on the name given by Greek translators (SEPTUAGINT) of this book in the second century BC. The name could be translated “source or “generation” or “beginnings”. The original Hebrew title is simply the first word of the book “Bereshith, “in the beginning” as we see in Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
GENESIS presents to us and marks the beginning of all that we know with the exception of GOD!
Universe… all creation
Mankind, Marriage, family, civilization
Sin, (Chapter 3) Sacrifice & … Promise of & pictures of salvation
Government, nations, & specifically Israel
The Author, Audience, & Account
The Author, Audience, & Account
Author: Moses is most likely the one who wrote this writing most likely during Israel’s wandering in the wilderness
He is the author of the Pentateuch (first five books)
Jewish tradition attributes the Pentateuch to Moses
Original Audience: The newly brought out Israelites from Egypt wandering in the wilderness
They would know who they were AND whose they were
This introduction was needed coming out of Egypt
In the CONTEXT of the TORAH this was needed information in order to lay the foundation for God’s Law
Knowing this was pertinent for them to fulfill God’s purpose for them (and us too!)
The Genera of Literature: this book is written in Hebrew and is narrative in its form.
It is part of the first five books … Law, Pentateuch or Torah (Hebrew for Law) Historical books “grouping”
The narrative is very Jewish… we will see this as we go through Genesis.
Often what will be shared is stated first
Then the details of the narrative are given
Sometimes a greater detail is given within the narrative
It tends to be more like spaghetti in its narrative rather than a straight linear line of events
EXAMPLES: Genesis 1 and 2 or Cains history then back to Seth
The Purpose: Genesis lays a historical and theological foundation for the rest of the Bible.
IF… the Bible is the story of God’s redemption for His people
Genesis 1-11
Genesis 1-11
THEN… Genesis 1-11 tells us why redemption is necessary
Genesis 1-2 God’s perfect creation
Genesis 3 explains how sin came into God’s perfect creation
Genesis 4-5 the two contrasting lines of Cain & Seth
Genesis 6-10 recount mankind's depraved state, yet Noah… Genesis 6:5-8
Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. The Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
God cleanses the world with a global flood
He spares Noah, Shem, Ham, & Japheth and their wives on the Ark providing their salvation from His wrath
Shortly after the flood we see man return to his evil ways, they unite against God seeking to be their own god… in Genesis 11 we see God confuse the languages spreading the people across the face of the earth
By the time you get to Genesis 11 you have covered about 2000 years!
The numbers add up in Genesis 5; 11 :
From Adam to Abraham we cover about 2000 years
It would be another 2000 years before Christ,
Fast forward to where we are now another 2000 years!
It is interesting that we cover such a broad span of tim in the first 11 chapters… yet just over a couple hundred years in the last 39 chapters.
Genesis 1-11 is marked by man’s rebellious hearts, disobedience to God’s words, and unable to redeem themselves… then we see something new beginning in chapter twelve
Genesis 12-50
Genesis 12-50
IF… the Bible is the story of God’s redemption for His people
THEN… Genesis 12-50 shows the steps God initiates to establish a redeemed people and make a way for the redeemer to come!
Genesis 3:15 marks the initial statement to man of one who would come through the seed of the woman… a redeemer.
And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
Genesis 12:1-3 is a hinge passage… transitioning us from God’s dealing with all man to a more focused approach and He foretells of One who will come through this line to redeem all nations! (The Messiah… Jesus)
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you; And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
In Galatians 3:8 looks at this and lets us know that God was looking to redeem all mankind
The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the nations will be blessed in you.”
His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
Each passing of the blessing God brings blessing (NOT MAN NOR FATHER!!!)
We see this demonstrated through Abraham’s faith and his obedience Genesis 15:6; 22:18
Then he believed in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.
“In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
God intended to bring blessing to the world… He has always cared for the world He created!
Jacob would have his name changed by God in Genesis 32:28
He said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed.”
Jacob would have twelve sons (FAMILY TREE)
God would care for them (Israel’s Family) through Joseph in Egypt
Think of this, as the people read and hear this verse they would have just been introduced to this God in Egypt
GOD Introduced:
GOD Introduced:
Hebrews 11:3 and Psalm 90:2 summarize Him well…
By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible.
Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
Allen Ross beautifully states:
The account of Creation is the logical starting point for Genesis, for it explains the beginning of the universe. These verses have received much attention in connection with science; this is to be expected. But the passage is a theological treatise as well, for it lays a foundation for the rest of the Pentateuch.
In writing this work for Israel, Moses wished to portray God as the Founder and Creator of all life. The account shows that the God who created Israel is the God who created the world and all who are in it. Thus the theocracy is founded on the sovereign God of Creation. That nation, her Law, and her customs and beliefs all go back to who God is. Israel would here learn what kind of God was forming them into a nation.
Ross, A. P. (1985). Genesis. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 27). Wheaton, IL: Victor Books.
For Israel and for us the implications are worth thinking about:
If God created us…
Then He is in control
Then He has the authority to give the Law
Then He can fully redeem us
Just as we will see He did in Egypt
Just as He would in His Son Jesus Christ at Calvary!
Genesis lays a beautiful historical and theological foundation for the rest of the Bible which is the powerful story of God’s redemption for His people He created!
