Introduction
What is your foremost love in life? How do you show this is your foremost love in life? Is that foremost love anything outside of God? Is your love for God divided? Is the unity of your love for God demonstrated in your life through your love for others, through obedience the Lord’s commands, and through your service within the body of Christ?
We are called to have a love for God above all else. We are called to be obedient to the Lord. We are called to teach and exemplify a reverential fear and love of God to others. Are we doing just that?
Focus Passage: Deuteronomy 6:1-9
Opening Passage:
Deuteronomy 6:1–3 NASB 2020
1 “Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the judgments which the Lord your God has commanded me to teach you, so that you may do them in the land where you are going over to take possession of it, 2 so that you, your son, and your grandson will fear the Lord your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. 3 Now Israel, you shall listen and be careful to do them, so that it may go well for you and that you may increase greatly, just as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
Outline

The Law of God (vv.1-3)

1. God’s favor is connected to obedience to His Law

a. Through obedience the promises of God are received

As we read within our text, in the land your going to take possession of. This is the same land that was promised to Abraham
Genesis 12:1 NASB 2020
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you;

b. Through obedience the blessings of God are received

The blessings followed obedience. It was obedience that proved Abram’s faith in the Lord.
Genesis 15:6 NASB 2020
6 Then he believed in the Lord; and He credited it to him as righteousness.
It is the same for us today. Faith without works (obedience) is dead. It will not produce or reproduce the blessings of God. As James writes
James 2:17 NASB 2020
17 In the same way, faith also, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.

2. God’s Law has a two-fold purpose

a. God’s Law is an expression of reverence of God - ‘…this is the commandmentto teach youthat you may do them in the landNow Israel, you shall listen and be careful to do them...’

b. God’s Law is a tool to teach reverence of God to the next generation - ‘...

No Division (vv.4-5)

Deuteronomy 6:4–5 NASB 2020
4 “Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! 5 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

1. There is no division within God - ‘…the LORD is one...’

2. There is to be no division within our worship - ‘…you shall love the LORD your God with all your heartall your soulall your strength...’

The Treasure We Have (vv.6-9)

Deuteronomy 6:6–9 NASB 2020
6 These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 And you shall repeat them diligently to your sons and speak of them when you sit in your house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up. 8 You shall also tie them as a sign to your hand, and they shall be as frontlets on your forehead. 9 You shall also write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

1. The treasure we have before us is an unfading treasure (Is 40:8; 1 Jn 2:15-17)

Isaiah 40:8 NASB 2020
8 The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.
1 John 2:15–17 NASB 2020
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God continues to live forever.

2. The treasure we have is God’s greatest commandment (v.5)

Deuteronomy 6:5 NASB 2020
5 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

3. The treasure we have is worthy of consecrated study and effort (vv.6-7)

4. The treasure we have is worthy of constant recitation (vv.8-9)
