Good News Club: Psalm 19, God Speaks to Me Through Creation

Introduction: Friends, I’m so excited to be back with you here at Good News Club for this Spring. Today, we’re going to look at 6 verses in Psalm 19 and consider something special about God from His creation.

Psalm 19:1 “1 The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.”

When we see the word “heavens”, what comes to mind?

It refers to the universe!

What’s in the universe?

The Sun, moon (Who wants to go the moon someday?), stars.

Asteroids, comets.

Planets (Who wants to be part of the effort to live on Mars?)!

According to this verse, what are all these things doing?

They’re telling us something!

Does that mean that they are speaking out loud?

No.

But their very existence points us to something great than themselves.

You mean that there’s something greater than all the stars, suns, planets and everything else in space?

There sure is!

What does glory mean?

The greatness of something that makes it stand out above all the rest.

Who does this greatness belong to?

The Creator of everything in the universe!

God Himself.

You see, all of the beauty, diversity, and power as displayed in all that makes up everything outside the earth was created by God and demonstrates His greatness.

Or, we could say that, if those things are great than God must be far greater in order to have created all those things!

So, when you look up at all the objects that God has placed in the universe (except the sun because none of us wants our eyes to be hurt), remember, the incredible Creator God made all of those things.

And those things are communicating to you that only God could have made them because He is great above all.

However, it’s not only the heavens, or all the things in the universe outside the earth that displays God’s greatness.

In the next part of the verse, we see the word “sky”.

This is the means through which many in the past and we today see God’s greatness in the universe.

This is our window to the universe!

What are we told about the sky in relation to God?

It’s the work of His hands.

This means that the sky was directly made by God, just like everything else that He has created.

Between both the Heavens representing the universe and the sky part of our earth, the writer is drawing attention to something about God.

It’s all His creation.

And, if He’s created the sky that is also part of the earth, then that means He must have created everything that’s under the sky also.

This means that God has created you, me, and everything that is one earth!

He’s created the trees, the oceans, the animals.

He’s created all things that exist!

All of God’s creation points to His greatness that nothing else can match!

Psalm 19:2 “2 Day to day pours forth speech, And night to night reveals knowledge.”

Why does anyone make a speech?

It’s because they have something important to communicate!

You see, all of God’s creation, from humans to the most distant object in the universe has something to communicate.

What is knowledge?

It’s information that we can learn.

Putting both of these ideas together, we understand that we can learn from God’s creation.

That’s why we have various studies related to God’s Creation.

What do we call the study of all living things? (Biology.)

What do we call the study of all that is in the universe outside of the earth? (Astronomy.)

You see, we can observe different things about these areas and many more that help us learn more about this items.

This is the wonder of our amazing God, that He would create everything in such a way that it can be studied and we can learn.

However, this also communicates something about God: Psalm 19:1, He is great beyond any comparison.

Psalm 19:3 “3 There is no speech, nor are there words; Their voice is not heard.”

Now wait a minute!

I thought that there was speech!

Isn’t that what Psalm 19:2 indicates?

Notice the next two words that follow speech: “words” and “heard”.

Remember, God has created all things in such a way that they communicate.

However, this communication is not necessarily through writing that we can read.

It’s not as if the moon has written a book.

“The Moon” an autobiography detailing God’s greatness.

No, that moon has not published a book!

The moon is not alive like that!

Also, this communication is not in the form of something that we can hear.

Like a lecture.

“At 2pm, the tree outside will give a lecture about God’s greatness.”

No, trees do not have an audible voice to speak!

Trees are not alive in that sense!

The point is, just by their mere existence, all of God’s creation communicates visually, though not through writing, audibly, though not through a lecture, through physical touch, taste, and smell about God’s greatness in how He has created with power and variety.

Psalm 19:4 “4 Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their utterances to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun,”

Who has been the recipient of this communication from all of creation about God’s unsurpassed greatness?

The earth; the world.

Who do these terms refer to?

Us!

All humanity has received this communication from God’s creation about His unsurpassed greatness in what He has made.

Is this communication just to a limited number of people on earth?

No!

This verse says “all the earth” and “to the end of the world” or even to the places that none of us has ever visited but there are people there!

Now, you might be thinking, “Ok Pastor Bill, but how do we know that everyone on earth has received this message?”

I’m glad you asked.

God gives us an illustration.

What part of God’s creation is mentioned in Psalm 19:4?

The sun!

Look at how the next verse describes the sun!

Psalm 19:5 “5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber; It rejoices as a strong man to run his course.”

During weddings today, the focus is normally on how beautiful the bride looks.

I know that my wife had me in awe as she came down the aisle on our wedding day; she still has me in awe!

During this time, the focus was on how handsome the bridegroom looked on the wedding day!

You see, we’re being pointed to a characteristic about the sun.

The Sun is a beautiful part of God’s wonderful creation.

Think about it.

How many of us love a sunny day?!

We all do!

When the sun is shining, what do we normally say about that day?

It’s a beautiful day!

This is because the sun is out in all it’s beauty giving light, and warmth as we’re going to consider in the next verse!

The sun is not only compared to a handsome bridegroom on his wedding day.

What else is the sun compared to?

A strong man running a race.

We could say a professional runner.

When do runners normally rejoice?

When they have won a race!

And when a runner has won the race, where is everyone’s attention?

On the runner!

Why? (Because the runner, with his/her great skill has done something that no one else in the race has done - they’ve won!)

This is the point, friends: we are amazed at all of the great abilities that the Lord has given to the sun that it demonstrates in great power each new day that the Lord has created.

Yet, we are not amazed simply because this is the sun.

We are amazed because the sun in its greatness points to the unmatched greatness of the One Who created it, God.

Psalm 19:6 “6 Its rising is from one end of the heavens, And its circuit to the other end of them; And there is nothing hidden from its heat.”

If the sun goes from one end of the earth to the other, then who witnesses the beauty and powerful abilities of the sun?

Everyone on earth!

There is no one who does not experience these from the sun.

Now you might be thinking about a friend or family member that you have who cannot see well or maybe even at all.

How does can they experience the effects of the sun and be amazed by God’s greatness?

This is where the latter part of Psalm 19:6 comes in.

What is there that does not experience the heat of the sun?

Nothing on earth!

We all experience the sun’s heat, even if we cannot witness it’s beauty!

Friends, I want you to think about this.

This is just one aspect of God’s creation that has been used as an illustration of His greatness as communicated to us.

However, this is not the only thing that God has made.

If God has demonstrated so much care in His creation of the sun, how much more does He care about all of His creation?

Conclusion: Thank You, Father, for Your creation that points to your unsurpassed greatness! This same Creator God loves you and wants you to be with Him. Our sin (anything that we think, say, or do that displeases God) separates us from Him and deserves judgment and punishment. But Jesus, God’s perfect Son, came to this earth having lived an obedient life, never sinning. This Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins and rose from the dead never to die again. If you believe in Jesus as your only Lord and Savior from your sins, He will forgive you and be your Savior.
