Text: Psalm 119.105-112
Undoubtedly one of the best known verses in Scripture has to be Psalm 119.105
NUN.
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet,
And a light unto my path.
When the ancient Psalmist was writing about light he was using a similar analogy that would have many of the hallmarks we are familiar with.
God’s Word Brings Light.
1. God’s Word is a Light for my feet. 105-106
The Way I have Found
There is certain agreement that this description of light is just the road in front of me. “For my feet” is a reminder that I may not know what is 6 months out but I can know the attitude, mindset and actions for today that will bring me to God’s desired end.
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man,
But the end thereof are the ways of death.
2. God’s Word is a Light for affliction. 107

The psalmist was suffering from affliction and consequent depression, not an unusual combination. Where could he go for help? Only one solution occurred to him. He would go to God’s Word—where else?
The source of help that was drawn from the word gave meaning and help to the suffering that he was going through and this allowed the suffering to seem less overwhelming.
3. God’s Word is a Light in my approach. (Worship)
Believers
This Psalmist saw that there was much more worship than bringing a bull or a goat and shedding its blood. The mere form of a ritual religion profited little. God is a spirit an those who would worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth.

in spirit because of who He is and in truth because of what we are.
4. God’s Word is a Light for my fears.
Guards me from my Accusers 109
You have heard the idoim “He took his life in his hands,” Or “I felt my stomach in my throat”
This is a way of describing danger… My soul is in my hand.” was a way of describing vulnerability.
vs 110 goes further.

Heavenly Home
How differently we look at statutes of God’s word when we realize that this is not all there is. You and I will find it easier to walk in light if we are not worried about what the darkness offers.
And what is wonderful is how often the imagery of light is used in Scripture. We find that it is a favorite illustration of the Apostles.
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
But the this theme for the Epistles came from the teaching of Jesus Himself.
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Jesus brings this picture of Light into the thinking of the NT writers. It was those that spent time with Jesus and teaching of the light themselves that keep us in the Christian world sensitive to the importance of light today.
What you find about the Word of God is that we were never meant to simply learn the Bible but that in learning it we took on its characteristics. So that when we obeyed by faith and took Christ as our own its transforming power makes us the light that demonstrates the wisdom of Gods’ word.
That same faith that drew our Ancient Psalmist to trust the word. Draws us to apply our faith as well. The result is that according to the Apostles we become the Light of the World. Because that Word that can only be believed now shines through us. And God’s Wisdom and light can shine like a city on a hill.
