Living a Fearless Life Pt3
Notes
Transcript
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, They stumbled and fell.
3 Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: Though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident.
4 One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.
What is Fear; really? I like the way Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary explains fear.

Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary (Fear)
FEAR: Natural emotional response to a perceived threat to one’s security or general welfare. It ranges in degree of intensity from a sense of anxiety or worry to one of utter terror. It can be a useful emotion when it leads to appropriate caution or measures that would guard one’s welfare. On the other hand, fear can be a hindrance to the enjoyment of life if it is induced by delusion or if it lingers and overpowers other more positive emotions such as love and joy, perhaps leading to an inability to engage in the normal activities of life.
Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary
Fear includes anxiety, dread, and loss of courage in the face of an unpleasant or dangerous situation. “Lexham Theological Workbook”

You may be living in fear now because of violence in the streets, carjackings, home invasions, loss of income, threats against ones family, the possibility of losing a love one... etc.

We must understand that we live in a sinful world that promotes fear everyday. The potential to fear everything and everyone is real in the lives of humanity.

When Adam sinned, Fear entered the world immediately.

10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
Since the emotion of fear has griped us through sin it can be difficult to live a fearless life. Even after seeing the great power of God, the Israelites feared the future God had for them which made it difficult for them to possess what God had promised them.

30 And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.
31 But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.
32 And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.
33 And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
The emotional response of fear can keep us from moving forward, it kept Israel from moving forward, but God has given us a remedy for fear in the finished work of Jesus Christ the Son of God.

14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
In this world, this is how we can live a fearless life. Only through the love of the Son of God.

17 For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Fear, a product of sin, can be defeated by receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord of your life.

1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus,
2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh,
When Paul talks about being “in Christ Jesus”, he’s speaking of living in the presence of Christ Jesus. King David understood this in our text.

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.
3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident.
4 One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.
We need to get and stay in contact with God through fellowship with other children of God, in prayer, through communion, by fasting, and worshiping God. David understood how powerful this relationship with God was.

In other words, King David is saying to us, My desire is that I live in the presence of the Lord all the days of my life. Dwelling in the house of the Lord signifies being in the presence of God. God’s presence was considered continuous in the Tabernacle and Temple.

15 Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayers offered in this place.
16 I have chosen and consecrated this temple so that my Name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.
David understood, to cast out fear it would take the presence of God in his life. If we want to live a fearless life we need to live a life filled with Jesus’ presence.

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.
Natalie Grant sings a song that says, “Your Presence is My Weapon.” The Presence of Jesus in our lives gives us the ability to live fearlessly in this world. Jesus’ Presence in our lives is our Weapon against fear.

Jesus does not want us to be fearful. He wants us to be bold and confident in Him.

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
Boldness is in the character of the children of God!
Boldness is in the character of the children of God!
1 The wicked flee when no man pursueth: But the righteous are bold as a lion.
29 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
30 By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
Confidence is the Strength of the children of God!
Confidence is the Strength of the children of God!
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
We know that if anything happens to us we have hope for another home that’s not of this world.
We know that if anything happens to us we have hope for another home that’s not of this world.
1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven:
3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life.
5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
