10 steps of sermon building
1. Grasp the meaning of the text in their town

Johns disciples were in conversation with a jew over purification. then they came to john and said “rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you bore witness - look, he is baptizing, and all are going to him.”
connects with the background of the beginning, but seems to be different from the conversation that they were having about purification?

Purpose of the Writings of John.
John as a whole is written in the high prose, sometimes poetry (Osborne, , p. 7).
John is seen as an extended narrative of what has already been written (Mark, Matthew, Luke).
The writings are different from the other synoptic gospels.
“John wrote both to awaken faith in the lost and to quicken faith in the followers of Jesus” (Osborne, , p. 6).
“John wanted to to win the lost as well as strengthen the believers” (Osborne, , p. 7)
“John wanted to encourage the church in light of Jewish persecution” (Osborne, , p. 7).
Context of John 3:22-30
Prior to this section Jesus is having a private conversation with Nicodemus who was a Pharisee.
deep theological understanding of what Jesus means by being born again John 3:3.
Jesus explains that one must be born of water and Spirit to be born again and to enter the kingdom of God (John 3:5).
Coming to John 3:16, saying that it is only belief in Jesus Christ that someone can receive eternal life.
lastly talking about how the light has come into the darkness, to expose the sins that are in the darkness. Those who do what is true come into the light so the individual knows their work is truly in God (John 3:21).
Goes into John 3:22 “after this..” is a transitional statement to what is now going to be discussed.
