Christ Sufficient sacrifice to fulfill the Law - Christ’s atonement fulfilled the law for the blood of bull and goats can not for give sin.
lets pray this morning before we get started
Well Good morning its always an honor to come before you and open Gods word.
As we come now to our text the the 10th chapter of the book of Hebrews verse 1-18. We find our selves along with the author spending our time today taking a little deeper diving looking at the in sufficiency of the old covenant for atonement of our sins and our need for that coming new covenant that was promise. Our job today is not to dog a system or covenant that God had design or made with his people it worked for a period in redemptive history. it did its job yet it was lacking God made it so and always point to a better covenant yet to come. So lets together this morning dive in to our text and see what our text has for us. so look with me in Hebrews chapter 10:1-18
For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? 3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired,but a body have you prepared for me;
6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”
8 When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), 9 then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, 16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,” 17 then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
Now as we take of i a want to give us a road map of where we are going this morning. I am settling in to the old school 3 point and how this applies to us us kinda thing. so our main idea today is Christ’s atonement fulfilled the law for the blood of bulls and goats can not forgive sins- first thing well see is the law and its need for something greater.- second Christ came to fill law why because the blood of bulls and goats can not forgive sins- finally christ came to bring forgives and perfection to his people. so lets dive in to our first point.
Verse 1-4 The law and its need for something greater - remember Christ’s atonement fulfilled the law but the blood of bulls and goats can not forgive sins.
As soon as we get taken of hear the author is reminding us and his audience hear that the law The old covenant is but a shadow if good things to come . look again at verse 1
For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.
Year after year, decade after decade, Father to son sacrifices were made in the temple for the atonement of sin. This atoning work was done by the priest repetitively for the sins of the nation, for individual sins, for the sins the new they committee and confessed and the sins they didn’t even know they commited and it never was to perfection because how could it be the blood of bulls and goats can not forgive sins. it is but a shadow of good things to come.
Which we know what hes referring to as the shadow of the the good things to come is the author of Hebrew laid out for us back in chapter 9:11-12 11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation) 12 he entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption. - we have the after picture Christ’s atonement fulfilled the law for the blood of bulls and goats can not forgive sins. what did it do? what else did christ do for us that the law did not do? let see carrying on in verse 2
2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? 3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
What happened under the old covenant is the sacrifices for the peoples sins, well according to book of Romans ch 3 the blood offered held of Gods wrath for sin for a time and pointed to a better sacrifice. On the day of atonement the priest after cleaning his own sin by sacrifice went in to the holy of holy to sprinkle blood of the animals on the mercy seat and God then with held his judgment for another year. It was not the blood that did anything nor any power invest in the priest for the remission of sins. He had to be atoned for as well. It was faith and obedience in an ordnance to our God who would with hold his wrath. thought this process showed the Jewish nation their need in the coming promise of a better sacrifice which we know to be Christ, the shadow of the good things to come.
the Blood of bulls and goat was sufferance to hold of wrath but not to cleans the person for eternity, or it would have only taken once to atone for sins not a multi-be sacrifice. We are a sin filled nation just as the Jewish nation was. the sacrifices remind them of their sin and a need for a saviour. As soon as the sun was setting that day- the day of atonement or the day they made their offering to God the probably where sinning again of it took that long. their concision already burdened by sin. Reminding them that yet again they needed to be atoned for. ever in need of a savior. Always in a state of being reminded of our weakness to sin and the inability of the law to atone permanently for us. it was a reminder and a pointer for something greater that was yet to come. an anchor for them to have hope in their God and for a greater sacrifice that was promised.
4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. - yet one came to fulfill the law to atone for sin once and for all.
Verse 5-10 Christ came to fill law why because the blood of bulls and goats can not forgive sins
5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said,“Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me;6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’”8 When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), 9 then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
By the time Jesus was ready to show up on the scene the people of God where becoming dull to the act of taking sacrifices to the temple. it become routing to them. like going to church because that something we a do or because its Sunday. Or its a new day i better crack that old bible open and read a line or two. The obedience, worship, reverence and love of their God had slowly begun to fad for some of them. Going to the temple has become a choir. It was never about the blood of the bulls and Goats. it was about the obedience of his people. yes Atonement for sin has to be made no question their but God wants his people to be worship him with obedience and love. Hes not a ruthless dictator hes the perfect image of a loving father but one whom show justice for sin and his people no longer worshiped him for the most part in their sacrifices. and now Christ came the perfect example of an obedient son whom came to do the fathers will. It was time for the first to past so the second to be established.
So christ came in the world to establish a new covenant. he said behold i have come listen to what Charles Spurgeon had to say about this “Observe when he says this. It is in the time of failure. All the sacrifices had failed. The candle flickered and was dying out, and then the great light arose, even the eternal light, and like a trumpet the words rung out, “Behold, I have come.” All this has been of no avail; now I come. It is in the time of failure that Christ always does appear. The last of man is the first of God; and when we have come to the end of all our power and hope, then the eternal power and Godhead appears with its “Behold, I have come.”
The infinite Ego appears: “Behold, I have come.” No mere man could talk thus and be sane. No servant or prophet of God would ever say, “Behold, I have come.” Saintly men do not talk so. God’s prophets and apostles have a modest sense of their true position. They never magnify themselves, though they magnify their office. It is for God to say, “Behold, I have come.” He who says it takes the body prepared for Him and comes in His own proper personality as the I AM. “In him all the fullness of deity dwells bodily” (Col 2:9). He comes forth from the ivory palaces to inhabit the tents of manhood. He takes upon Himself the body prepared for Him of the Lord God, and He stands forth in His matchless personality ready to do the will of God. “He was well pleased for all the fullness to dwell in him” (Col 1:19).”
Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. Christ came to do the fathers will in order that the first the old covenant might be done away with so he could establish the second the new covenant. Which is established by Christ obedience to the father. He lived a life of perfect obedience and worship to the father and fulfilled the law so we might now have a new covenant with the father.
What is that New Covenant? The New Covenant is the promise that God makes with mankind that He will forgive sin and restore communion with those whose hearts believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is the mediator of the New Covenant, and His death on the cross is the basis of the promise. He defeated death by His resurrection and restored life for those who believe in Him by faith in the son for those who confess their sins to the father and repent and believe. by his obedience sacrifice are made void and faith alone became a reality.
verse 11-18 christ came to bring forgives and perfection to his people.
The author of Hebrews is reinforcing his point that it is finished. If thinking back to the vail being torn on the day of crucifixion wasn't enough for the priest and his audience he makes a great argument hear. The priest day in and day out stood and worked, offering the same sacrifices that could never take away sins. They worked daily in the service for God. Their work was never complete, their duties passed on father to son generation to generation, bull after bull goat after goat animal after animal, ritual after ritual, all the same.
Then Christ came the great high priest once and for all, whom sacrifice him self for the the sin of a all Gods people. He is now seated at the right hand of God. He is no longer working daily its done. no more. Hes waiting to make his enemies his foot stool which is a reference to Palm 110 on his second coming. It just goes to show that what happen on that day on Calvary he secured our atonement till he return to Judge the living and the dead.
I love what Charles Spurgeon had to say on this “one sacrifice for sins for all time On Him their sins were laid, and He was numbered with the transgressors. There He, in their stead, suffered what was due to the righteousness of God and made atonement to divine justice for the sins of His people. This was done, not by many offerings, but by one sacrifice, and that one alone. Jesus offered no other sacrifice: He had never made one before, nor since, nor will He present another sacrifice in the future. His sin offering is one. sat down at the right hand of God Our Lord sits down because there is no more sacrificial work to do. Atonement is complete;” Hallelujah Praise God
This is the hope we long for, the holy spirit bears witness with us. he put his laws on our hearts and writes the on our minds, he will remember our sins and lawless deeds no more. in Christ we need no more offerings for sin. Jesus is our final sacrifice, he whom brings perfection in the atoning for sin, its finished with him. in him we find hope. in him we find rest. in him we find comfort. in him we find grace. in find we get access the holy spirit and the law written on our hearts. by faith in him and him alone we are saved and our sins are remembered no more. this is the icing on top the cake.
The author of Hebrews has ben building a case Christ’s atonement for our sins is the fulfillment of it all. So by doing what he did on the cross its now finished, Seat at the right hand of the father and we might have full atonement for our sin not partial just holding of judgment for a time but full forgiveness from the father for the forgiveness of sin the he will remember it no more. and our conscience can be clear. We get the comforter the spirit dwelling in us. the law written on our hearts and mind. Assurance of Christ coming again but this time to judge the living and the dead and to bring about his kingdom. that is our hope in the perfecter of our faith he who remember our sins no more. what joy can be found only in Christ,.
To paraphrases one author “ the people of Israel cried out to God for their sins often on the day of atonement yet it only held of judgment for another year. God still remembered their sins. Now Christ has come and is a mediator for a new and better covenant. God no longer remembers our sin. The blood of Jesus blotted our our sins.” We rest in the perfection of jesus work and find full forgiveness in him and his finished work on the cross.
How does this affect us not that we haven't all ready seen that all ready but lets bring this home.
a warning and joys and so action points.
this is not a liberty to sin
Though our sins and lawless deeds are remembered no more this passage is not a get out of jail free card by any means to let sin about much in us once we come to the father. The Atoning work of Christ gets us in the door and hold us fast to our eternal security in the christ Jesus. Yet we still have battle a head of us fight sin in. God give us the ability to fight and fight we must. We know the battle is won though Christ for our sin but the war hear and now are still to be fought. We are endweled by the spirit, anchored by Christ secured to the father. Take up arms against your sins. we are not at liberty to to let sin run free in our body's or the church though we are free in christ. We are called to put off the old self and cling to our newness in Christ Jesus. its a battle church cling to each other cling to the word of God, cling to Jesus as we fight a war the Christ has won for us but we must fight sin.
Desiring God had this to help us battle sin 1. Take heart from the truth that the old sinful you is decisively already dead (Romans 6:6; Colossians 3:3; Galatians 5:24). By faith we are united to Christ . This means three things: (a) The mortal blow to our “old man” has been struck; (b) the old self will not succeed in domination now; and (c) his final obliteration is certain.
the Joy we see Christ is greater than all
Their is nothing else we can turn too, sin and the world will save us nor will it give us joy beyond what christ can. Christ’s atonement fulfilled the law for the blood of bulls and goats can not forgive sins. Nothing else on this planet or in this solar system can we turn to find salvation by faith alone. their is nothing else can we turn to that we might shed the blood of bull and goat that might hold of the wrath of God for a time. Christ is all we have. He is our Hope he is the endless well of joy we run to. He is the perfecter of our faith.
Solus Christus -Christ alone only mediator between God and human by which we might be saved. that is good ness and joy for us. We don’t have to relay on any works to have hope in this life, we don’t have to relay on anyone else to mediate our atonement by doing a ritual sacrifice. We can at any point at in second fall on our face in prayer of repentance or cry out in the car to Jesue to mediate for us to the father. We have an advocate all way pleading for us with the father with a 100% win rate. That is the greatest Joy and hope for us.
For the christian - where is your hope found. in your selves. Are you resting in your own power. do you think by doing Good dead's or doing good works you might be saved even though you have come to faith in christ. is your hope planted in the fact you come to church, read the word pray. you can’t add to your salvation and Romans 3:28 teaches justification is apart from works. Our Hope in this life christian is only in the one who seated at the right hand of the father not our own actions. Our good works are a byproduct of faith not producing faith. So rest in him do good because you love him who first loved you.
for the unbeliever - where are you placing your hope in live. Where ever it is is it unshaken are you trying to daily and it just seams like you can not be anchored to something that give you hope, joy security. Christ came to give us hope for security in eternity with the father. A place where we can come be made a new our conscience be made a new our sins remembered no more by confessing we are sinners and placing our faith in him.
