What is the chief end of man?
Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.
31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
1 Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord! 2 Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, 3 who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways! 4 You have commanded your precepts to be kept diligently. 5 Oh that my ways may be steadfast in keeping your statutes! 6 Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. 7 I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules. 8 I will keep your statutes; do not utterly forsake me!
4 Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
We all want our heart’s desires met. When they are to glorify God then we have life.
Because of sin we are dead to God
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.
9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
Our only hope in this condition is Jesus
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Goal in life?
Glorify God through the help of Christ
Goal in parenting?
Glorify God through the help of Christ
What has God said it looks like to glorify him in parenting?
Discipline=negative reinforcement, and training/instructing/teaching
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
18 Discipline your son, for there is hope; do not set your heart on putting him to death.
17 Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.
24 Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.
When a child is left without discipline, or correction, training, they are left in their natural state
Given to the natural desires of the flesh
28 A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.
Need to start:
Teaching children their sin before God
And it’s negative consequences
(spanking, taking things away)
Ex. Not honoring parents is a sin against God
Worthy of death, show that in discipline
Ex. Sexual activity outside of marriage is a sin against God
Worthy of death, show that in discipline
Teaching children it is better to obey
Rewarding good behavior
Ex. Honoring your parents will lead to life—you get to play on tablet today
Ex. You have done your homework well this week—let’s go out for ice cream
Teaching children their need for Jesus
Ex. Do you know why you desire to dishonor parents and get angry?
Because you have created an idol out of self—and God says that's the way to death
Your desires need to be in God instead who will give you a desire to obey instead
Jesus is the only one who can change your heart.
Ex. Do you know why you desire to have sexual activity outside of marriage?
Because you have an idol of pleasure
Jesus is the only one who can make God your greatest pleasure
Starts with you

Man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.
31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
Read:
One Chapter of the gospel of John
Each chapter write at least one thing you learned about Jesus
Church:
Write down the main point of the sermon preached and what you need to change in light of the sermon
Parenting:
Make a list of sinful behaviors that Brennan has been doing
Make a list of options for disciplining
Sit down with Brennan when he is not angry and talk to him about how these sinful behaviors are dishonoring to God and need to stop, and the measures that will be taken if they continue.
