Doctrine session: Guilt and Shame
*Watch video
Who would like to give me a summary of the video that we just watched?
We are all guilty of breaking God’s laws.
Shame is meant to show us something is wrong and needs to be dealt with.
Guilt and shame should lead to repentance.
Repentance leads to God’s forgiveness and compassion.
How would you define guilt?
Guilt refers to the objective status of someone being found guilty for a wrong committed as well as the punishment that comes with it (see Matt. 5:21-22, James 2:10)
Not an emotion
How would you define shame?
Shame is the emotional pain that comes from sinful actions.
Saying “I feel guilty” is essentially synonymous with “I feel shame.”
How does this connect with what we have been learning in The Gospel Project?
Nehemiah 9: Confession and restoration
Confession & repentance
Why important
Main Point: Those who feel the shame of their sin and repent will receive the Lord’s compassion.
Sin leads to guilt.
Malachi 3:7–12 (ESV)
7 From the days of your fathers you have turned aside from my statutes and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts. But you say, ‘How shall we return?’ 8 Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. 9 You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. 10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. 11 I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil, and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the Lord of hosts. 12 Then all nations will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight, says the Lord of hosts.
James 2:10–11 ESV
10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. 11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.

Jesus shows us our need for a Savior and came to be the Savior we need.
Main Point: Those who feel the shame of their sin and repent will receive the Lord’s compassion.
Sin leads to guilt.
Sin leads to shame.
Malachi 3:13–15 ESV
13 “Your words have been hard against me, says the Lord. But you say, ‘How have we spoken against you?’ 14 You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. What is the profit of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts? 15 And now we call the arrogant blessed. Evildoers not only prosper but they put God to the test and they escape.’ ”
Shame = something is wrong.
Israel is ignoring shame.
Shame can be both helpful and harmful.
When might shame be helpful? When might shame be harmful?
Start in shame, but don’t stay there.
Our feelings of shame are affected by our turning to God in repentance.
What should turning to God in repentance do to our feelings of shame?
Give it context
Trading our shame for Christ’s righteousness
Main Point: Those who feel the shame of their sin and repent will receive the Lord’s compassion.
Sin leads to guilt.
Sin leads to shame.
The fear of the Lord leads to God’s compassion.
Malachi 3:16–18 (ESV)
16 Then those who feared the Lord spoke with one another. The Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name. 17They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. 18 Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.
Some responded correctly
Those who feared God were blessed
What is the fear of the Lord?
The fear of the Lord is a right reverence and respect for who God is and what He does.
Taking God at His word.
Their reward: God’s watching eye and listening ear.
We want this… but how do we get there?
How do we know if we fear God?
Experiencing His compassion
Compassion: God’s wrath spared and God’s wealth shared.
So… have you experienced God’s compassion?
Christ Connection
Through Jesus’s sinless life, death and resurrection, God has provided the way for those who trust Jesus to be freed of their guilt. Our guilt can be replaced. Christ was provided to cover our shame and set us free from the penalty of sin.
Head: Why is it important to understand that Jesus alone removes our guilt?
Because our guilt shouldn’t engulf us
Heart: Why does sin cause shame?
Sin kills relationships
Shame warns
Hands: How can we experience the mercy and compassion of the Lord?
Quickly running to Him
Quick confessors and rapid repenters
