Jesus is about to have the worst day on earth and he chooses to serve.
Jesus Security
John 13:1-3 (ESV)
Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. . 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,
Jesus knew his path
15 hours until his death.
Gods path will never contradict His word
John 14:23-24 (ESV)
23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.
God’s path will require you to depend on him.
Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
John 13:3 (ESV)
3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God,
Jesus was secure in his relationship with the Father
God will allow you to do his will
John 15:4-5  (ESV)
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
touching feet was regarded as menial slave work and as such was primarily an assignment given to Gentile slaves and women
Matthew 11:29  (ESV)
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
John 1:27 (ESV) 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.”
Calvin says in his commentary on John’s gospel, “If the other gospels show us Christ’s body, John shows us His soul.”

Are you willing to humiliate yourself for God?
Security in Salvation
John 13:6-11 (ESV)
6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” 8 Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.”9 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
Up to this point the conversation had focused on the various forms of the verb niptein,(nee-toe) which has here been translated as “wash,” but in this verse the verb louein(lewwoh), “bathed,” occurs first.vs 6 to vs 10

What is keeping Peter from Jesus salvation, from security in Jesus..
Stubbornness
The psalmist cries out….
Psalm 51:2  (ESV)
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,     and cleanse me from my sin!
Salvation is a one-time act of justification by faith, but the lifelong process of sanctification is one of washing from the stain of sin we experience as we walk through the world
All for one series upcoming
1 John 1:9 (ESV)
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Security in Jesus example
John 13:12-16 (ESV)
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
Remember the disciples where arguing who the greatest…
He is the example for us with how to live our lives
Luke 14:11  (ESV)
11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
James 4:6 (ESV)
6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
- Allen Hood
“The most humbling thing one can do is to look upon how Jesus responded to suffering and mistreatment. His whole life was ordered around the attribute of meekness. It was his greatest pursuit. From the moment He was born the Father was contemplating His own humility in the person of His Son. Love would be openly displayed as Jesus went lower and lower. Anyone who truly looks upon the man Christ Jesus and His meekness will be left staring at the great mystery. How can One so strong be so tender as He stoops so low? Looking upon Jesus is the great sanctifier to areas of pride and anger in the human heart.”
Matthew 20:28  (ESV)
28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Security in serving
John 13:17  (ESV)
17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
Mark 9:35 (ESV)
35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.”
Mark 10:44  (ESV)
44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.
How can we be servants to those around us?
Listening.. Being the team parent.. helping someone at work who talks bad about you..
You do not get to pick who you serve, if God puts someone in your path do not be stubborn.. serve them
Matthew 5:43-48  (ESV)
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers,[a] what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Philippians 2:6-11  (ESV)
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
