The 3 the 12 and the 70

Why are we here?
What is our purpose as a church?
Great commandment and Great commission
As a team?
1 Thessalonians 1:8 NKJV
8 For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything.
Our mission statement:
Romans 5:17 NKJV
17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)
What is your purpose?
Our purpose is to point people to the Father through Jesus
We seize and create opportunities for the Holy Spirit to communicate in us and through us
how do we do that?
These will be leadership themes, not step by step instructions
Its up to you to fill in the blanks, literally and figuratively
Case by case problems solving is micromanaging
My goal is to equip you to know vision and standards of the church so well that you know the answers before people ask the questions
Jesus had: 3, 12, 70, 5,000
Jesus understood he couldn’t possibly reach everyone on a one on one basis
We too as leaders, cannot and should not try and develop everyone who comes to us one on one
The 12:
He called 12 men to drop everything and come follow Him
These 12 had a unique leadership connection to Jesus as He commissioned them for ministry
Matthew 10:1 NKJV
1 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.
The twelve are commissioned with authority
The 3:
Peter, James and John
Jesus held an even closer relationship with three men, who have been dubbed the inner circle, made up of Peter, James (or Jacob) and John
Jesus allowed these three men to walk with him in some of the most intimate and personal times of His life and ministry
Garden of Gethsemane as He called out to God in prayer the night before His crucifixion
Jesus shared his struggles and his pain with these men
He did not grant the other disciples the same access to him
Matthew 26:36–37 NKJV
36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.
Out of those three only one remained with Him at the cross
Who’s in your three?
The 70:
Beyond just the 12, we also know that Jesus had more disciples who were with Him regularly, and heard His teachings often,
Our Role as the 70:
Luke 10:1 NKJV
1 After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go.
We prepare the way for people to encounter Jesus
We are sent out with a purpose
Luke 10:2 NKJV
2 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.
2. We Labor and Pray
He calls us to work
He calls us to pray for laborers not for the harvest
The harvest is already waiting for us
Luke 10:3–6 NKJV
3 Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. 4 Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road. 5 But whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you.
3. Ready or not here we go
Favorable outcome aren’t the motivating factor
Don’t take your sweet time getting ready to be prepared
GO!
Do it now!
Don’t get distracted
Luke 10:7–8 NKJV
7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.
4. Don’t be high maintenance
Leaders shouldn’t be high maintenance people!
If you are a high maintenance person you are either: not self aware or you have pride in your life!
I pray it’s because you don’t realize it
Be high maintenance in your own house, not in God’s
Luke 10:9 NKJV
9 And heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’
5. Become a conduit for the Holy Spirit to move through
Be proactive
Notice he doesn’t say see what happens
He says heal the sick
Let the Holy Spirit speak through you
Luke 10:10–12 NKJV
10 But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘The very dust of your city which clings to us we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near you.’ 12 But I say to you that it will be more tolerable in that Day for Sodom than for that city.
6. Shake off rejection and offense
How the world and people react to us shouldn’t be our motivation
Our obedience is never contingent upon outcomes
Dust of rejection
The better you can shake of rejection will directly effect the amount of opportunities you take
notice i didn’t say you get, but you take
Being a disciple comes at a great cost
What we sacrifice
time
our energy
When you become a leader you give up the right to think about yourself. -Gerald Brooks
But look at the rewards:
Luke 10:17 NKJV
17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
Jesus delegates his authority to us
Luke 10:18–20 NKJV
18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
2. Our names are written in heaven
That’s a big deal
Luke 10:23–24 NKJV
23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”
3. We get to see things that only others dream of seeing
Stand on this scripture for your business, your family, this church
1 Corinthians 2:9 NKJV
9 But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
Reiterate points:
4 Questions:
1. In your own words communicate our mission statement
2. Talk about one thing that jumped out at you tonight.
3. What are you going to be praying for this week?
4. What are you going to work on this month?
