Intro

Settling the debate

Matthew 5:31–32 NKJV
“Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.
Jesus says furthermore, continues to address the law of God
He has just condemned every person guilty of adultery by looking with lust.
now He brings more clarity to the law with regard to divorce.
refrencing this passage
Deuteronomy 24:1 (NKJV)
“When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house,
This verse goes on to forbid her from remarrying the same man after a second divorce or if her second husband dies.
This passage was debated heavily during the time Jesus walked the earth and there were two schools of thought
Shammai and Hillel two leading rabbis during Jesus earthly ministry.
developed two schools of thought regarding Jewish law.
The Shammaite interpretation was very strict and very conservative.
The Hillelite interpretation of Jewish law was very liberal and lenient.
So some people were divorcing their wives for any reason at all
if you made dinner poorly that could constitute finding no favor in your eyes.
this view offered an easy and guilt free way to terminate your marriage.
Jesus addresses this answer by stating that all divorce outside of sexual immorality is considered adultery.
