Famines from old Bones
II Samuel 21:1
Then there was a famine in the days of David three years, year after year; and David enquired of the LORD. And the LORD answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites
In our life we will encounter spiritual Famines-Times of no spiritual growth
To get out of the famine we need to do four things found in this chapter
1. David ENQUIRED of the Lord, why they were having the famine. (vs. 1)
a. The heart is DECIETFUL and DESPERATLY WICKED: who can know it. Jer 17:9
i. If we think we know what is going on we need to double check our selves and ask God for direction and guidance
b. It was from a past sin that got dug up
i. Joshua 9:3-17
2. David took action in CONFRONTING the past wrong (vs. 2-5)
2 Samuel 21:2–5 KJV 1900
2 And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the remnant of the Amorites; and the children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.) 3 Wherefore David said unto the Gibeonites, What shall I do for you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement, that ye may bless the inheritance of the Lord? 4 And the Gibeonites said unto him, We will have no silver nor gold of Saul, nor of his house; neither for us shalt thou kill any man in Israel. And he said, What ye shall say, that will I do for you. 5 And they answered the king, The man that consumed us, and that devised against us that we should be destroyed from remaining in any of the coasts of Israel,
a. He did this IMMEDIATELY
b. Instant, willing, cheerful, obedience
3. David got to the ROOT of the sin (vs 12)
2 Samuel 21:12 KJV 1900
12 And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabesh-gilead, which had stolen them from the street of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa:
a. If we do not get ALL of the sin out it will come back to bite us
b. AIKEN
i. He took of the ACCURSED thing (Joshua 7:1)
c. ANANIAS AND SAPHIRAH
i. He kept back a PART of the price (Acts 5:2)
d. Lot
i. Is it not a LITTLE one (Gen 19:20)
4. 4 Bury the sin (vs. 14)
2 Samuel 21:14 KJV 1900
14 And the bones of Saul and Jonathan his son buried they in the country of Benjamin in Zelah, in the sepulchre of Kish his father: and they performed all that the king commanded. And after that God was intreated for the land.
a. Once we bring the sin to the Lord we need to let him put it UNDER the blood and stay there
RESULT
The LORD was INTREATED for the land (vs 14)
Intreated is our word ENTREAT : NEGOTIATE or INTERCEDE
The best life we can have in one where GOD is interceding on our behalf.
