John called the religious leaders and the people snakes
satanists, off spring of satan
warned them of the wrath of God that is coming
they are storing up wrath for themselves
they cant say that because they are the of spring of Abraham that they are ok
and if you say that they are a new person now then aught to have fruit as proof
turn to the Messiah because the ax is laid at the root of your tree and you will be thrown into the lake of fire
John is giving the people shock and awe because tat is what they need to realize the enormity of their sin
then the people started wondering and questioning each other
is John the Christ? is he the Messiah?
so John is going to reveal some thing about the Messiah to the people
we will learn these things here this morning
Read Luke 3 7-20.
Pray

The Deity Of Jesus

John growing up in the Essene community
John knowing who he is
needing to know about the Messiah
being filled with the Holy Spirit from birth
was taught about Jesus
was in love with Jesus
but more importantly knowing that the Messiah is God
Luke 3:15 LSB
Now while the people were in a state of expectation and all were reasoning in their hearts about John, as to whether he was the Christ,
Luke 3:16 LSB
John answered, saying to them all, “As for me, I baptize you with water, but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the strap of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
John is telling them that the Messiah is not just a man
He is God
lets look at what John knows about Jesus
Jesus is the creator
Genesis 1:26 LSB
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, so that they will have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Genesis 2:7 LSB
Then Yahweh God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and so the man became a living being.
Genesis 2:8 LSB
And Yahweh God planted a garden in Eden, toward the east; and there He placed the man whom He had formed.
then in Isaiah John saw the Son in all His glory
Isaiah 6:1 LSB
In the year of King Uzziah’s death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, with the train of His robe filling the temple.
This is the pre incarnate Jesus, before He came as a baby
Isaiah 6:2 LSB
Seraphim stood above Him, each having six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.
with angels all around Him to worship Him
Isaiah 6:3 LSB
And one called out to another and said, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is Yahweh of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory.”
Isaiah 6:4 LSB
And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called out, while the house of God was filling with smoke.
John was in awe of who Jesus is
that is why he said
Luke 3:16 LSB
John answered, saying to them all, “As for me, I baptize you with water, but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the strap of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
one who is mightier
one who is majestic
one who I’m not worthy to untie His dusty sandal
We get this one view of Jesus the man,

Jesus The Man

The Baby born
The hated, misunderstood,
one who placed Himself under the Roman authority
The one who died
Jesus who is a friend
Jesus who is tired and sleeping in the front of the boat
Jesus who is tired and needs to get away from it all
Jesus who is a friend
Jesus who loves you more than you can imagine
Jesus, the one who has been tempted in every way but still not sin
Jesus, who is acquainted with grief, and carries our sorrows
But Jesus is also God
We are looking at God this morning
The Apostle John saw Jesus in this same way- High and lifted up
Luke 9:28 LSB
Now it happened some eight days after these words, that taking along Peter and John and James, He went up on the mountain to pray.
Luke 9:29 LSB
And it happened that while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming.
Jesus Glory shown through
they saw Jesus for who he is
again on the Isle of Papmos the apostle John saw a vision of Jesus in Heaven
Revelation 1:13 LSB
and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash.
Revelation 1:14 LSB
And His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire.
Revelation 1:15 LSB
His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters,
Revelation 1:16 LSB
and having in His right hand seven stars, and a sharp two-edged sword which comes out of His mouth, and His face was like the sun shining in its power.
it would be an honor and privilege to be the one to untie His sandals
the only thing we are worthy to do for Jesus is to fall with our faces to the ground at His feet
but for His bride Jesus died
so he could marry her
so He could lavish His Grace on her
so He could cover her with His Love
Jesus who Isaiah saw high and lifted up
Jesus who John saw with His face shining as the sun
Jesus who Mary Magdalene saw in the garden the morning of the resurrection
Jesus the apostles saw in the boat calming the seas
Jesus the thousands of people saw giving them a banquet in the wilderness
Jesus the blind man saw, who was blind from birth
Jesus the Son of God
Jesus who is fully a man but at the same time fully God
who came from Heaven returned
and is coming to take His Bride Home
Jesus the man who can sympathize with all our sorrows
And God the Son who is the creator, sustainer, and ruler of this universe
The one who John says I am not worthy to untie his sandals
We also are unworthy
Jesus sits on the throne of God in Heaven
the same that Isaiah saw
with the angels around worshiping Him
we are fallen beings, unworthy, we were born with a sin nature, born hating God
in total rebellion against God
we were born with this diabolical bent agaist God
we are totally unworthy

But Jesus

Provided a way through His death on the cross
He bought His bride from the slave market of sin
with His precious blood
with His substitutionary death on the cross
and
because of that we have become worthy
we are told to come boldly to the throne of grace
Jesus has a special duty on the Throne of God
that is to be our intercessor, our defence lawyer
who never looses, because when the accuser points his finger at us and says look at what he did
Jesus turns to the judge and opens His hand and says the scars that took away that sin
the blood that took away that sin
my bride is innocent
We are worthy because Jesus made us worthy
Can you with confidence say I’m worthy??
one day all will stand before Jesus
all will bow before Him
are you going to bow as a bride casting your crowns before Him in praise and worship
or as the accused with no defense
one to be Judged and found guilty
