Acts 2:1–4 KJV 1900
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

I. A new dispensation!

A. The second chapter of Acts marks a turning point in the history of God’s kingdom. Acts 2 is the beginning of the Church.

1. A new phase of His redemptive plan unfolds as the Church is born.

B. The Seven Dispensations

1. God dealt with Adam under the Dispensation of “Innocence.” (Adam)

2. God then dealt with the Dispensation of “Conscience.” (Noah)

3. God then dealt with the Dispensation of “Human Government.” (Tower of Baal)

4. God then dealt with the Dispensation of “Promise.” (Abraham)

5. God then dealt with the Dispensation of “Law.” (Israel)

6. God then dealt with the Dispensation of “Grace or the New Testament Church.”

i. This is the Dispensation that we are now in.

ii. The New Testament Church was brought in by the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

iii. This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

7. God will deal later with the Dispensation of “The Kingdom.”

C. The Birth of the Church was not done in a corner somewhere, but in the very heart of Jerusalem—the chief city of Israel.

1. It started on the feast day of Pentecost, with many visitors in the city for the feast.

2. This was God’s timetable for the Spirit to come and start the Church.

i. It did not come because of the believer’s prayer or because they tarried, or met certain requirements—except of them being believers.

ii. It was God’s time to send His Spirit to the earth!

D. Pentecost is the Greek name for the Feast of Weeks, a prominent feast in the calendar of ancient Israel celebrating the giving of the Law on Sinai.

1. It is also called the Feast of Harvest.

2. This time the first ripe grain of the later wheat crop was cut and waved before God by the priest.

i. This was also a firstfruits’ offering, which was holy to the LORD.

3. Pentecost means fifty. It took place fifty days after the Feast of Passover.

E. God sent the Holy Ghost at the right time, His time!

1. This is the reason for “The rushing mighty wind, and cloven tongues like as of fire.”

Acts 2:2–3 KJV 1900
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

i. It is the ongoing evidence of the Holy Ghost in our midst today!

ii. GOD NEVER TOOK THE HOLY GHOST AWAY.

iii. Just like He sent it then He is still sending it now—FOR ALL TO RECEIVE AS A GIFT.

iv. Just like Peter said ye shall receive it..

v. It’s to you and your children and to all that are afar off!

Acts 2:38–39 KJV 1900
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

2. In both Hebrew and Greek, the words for “wind” and “spirit” are the same.

II. The outpouring .

Acts 2:1 KJV 1900
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

A. In one accord in one place.

1. Please note also in verse 1—“…they were all with one accord in one place.”

2. What brought this unity?

i. At the Passover dinner, disciples were arguing who were the greatest.

ii. Now they are all in one accord and in one place.

3. I believe two things changed these men.

i. Calvary.  Jesus on the cross. ii. The revelation they received from Jesus.

Luke 24:45 KJV 1900
Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

4. The Holy Ghost didn’t come and then they all got into one accord.

i. They got into one accord and the Holy Ghost came.

ii. The Church must be in one accord for the moving of God and God’s will to be done.

iii. All 120 that were mentioned in Acts 1:15 were of one mind.

Acts 1:15 KJV 1900
And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

iv. None were uninterested, unconcerned, or lukewarm, but all were in earnest and united in faith and prayer.

1. I believe that is what is happening around here right now!
2. There are a ton of circumstances happening in many of our lives right now, but we are growing together despite what happens in one accord!
Acts 2:2–3 KJV 1900
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

B. The Holy Ghost Came!

1. The Holy Ghost came and FILLED the house AND FILLED the people!

2. The fire fell and rested on them ALL.

i. When the Brazen Altar in both the Tabernacle and Temple were finished being built at the dedication, the fire came from heaven and was to burn continually.

a. God is the one who ignited the first fire upon the altar of the tabernacle showing that He was well pleased with what they had done in obeying and praying. Seeking after Him.
b. Here in the book of Act 2 we find that the people had obeyed and prayed and were FILLED and cloven tongues like as a fire sat upon each of them!
i. God wasn’t just pleased with one He was pleased with them all and showed His pleasure by igniting that fire in EACH of them!

3. There was evidence that the Holy Ghost was now not just in the house, but in each of the people!

Acts 2:3–4 KJV 1900
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

i. Jesus told Nicodemus that every believer would be like the wind when they received the Holy Ghost:

John 3:8 KJV 1900
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
a. They would not know the exact place or when it would come!
b. There would be a sound associated!

ii. Jesus told the disciples in Mark that every believer would speak with new tongues (languages)

Mark 16:16–18 KJV 1900
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

C. It happened SUDDENLY.

Acts 2:2 KJV 1900
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

1. This came in the perfect time of God.

2. It was a sudden thing for those experiencing it, but God knew exactly when it needed to fall and had planned to pour it out then.

3. Yes, I have emphasized Obey and Pray, but God can and will move freely, apart from man’s merits!

i. When God moves He always gets it right!

ii. When God moves in He consumes the things that He is pleased.

a. Consider Elijah on Mount Caramel
b. Consider each of the dedications of the tabernacle and the different Temples!
Hebrews 12:28–29 KJV 1900
Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire.
