Covenant -trust
It belongs to the Lord
Forms an important piece of your response to God’s covenant.
“One tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the fields or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord and must be set apart to him as holy. If you want to buy back the Lord’s tenth of the grain or fruit, you must pay its value, plus 20 percent. Count off every tenth animal from your herds and flocks and set them apart for the Lord as holy. You may not pick and choose between good and bad animals, and you may not substitute one for another. But if you do exchange one animal for another, then both the original animal and its substitute will be considered holy and cannot be bought back.”
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!
God had already made a coventant with the people, and subsequently us.
Not, following their part of the coventant, moved them outside the path of blessing.
This then is a restoration of covenant. God cannot bless covenant breakers. Breaking the covenant, breaks the blessing.
Third year
“At the end of every third year, bring the entire tithe of that year’s harvest and store it in the nearest town. Give it to the Levites, who will receive no allotment of land among you, as well as to the foreigners living among you, the orphans, and the widows in your towns, so they can eat and be satisfied. Then the Lord your God will bless you in all your work.
“Every third year you must offer a special tithe of your crops. In this year of the special tithe you must give your tithes to the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows, so that they will have enough to eat in your towns.

Commitment to the community of worship
Commitment to the community of worship
In our individualistic world, we have in a lot of ways lost the sense of a people.
As for the tribe of Levi, your relatives, I will compensate them for their service in the Tabernacle. Instead of an allotment of land, I will give them the tithes from the entire land of Israel.
“From now on, no Israelites except priests or Levites may approach the Tabernacle. If they come too near, they will be judged guilty and will die. Only the Levites may serve at the Tabernacle, and they will be held responsible for any offenses against it. This is a permanent law for you, to be observed from generation to generation. The Levites will receive no allotment of land among the Israelites, because I have given them the Israelites’ tithes, which have been presented as sacred offerings to the Lord. This will be the Levites’ share. That is why I said they would receive no allotment of land among the Israelites.”
Elders who do their work well should be respected and paid well, especially those who work hard at both preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, “You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain.” And in another place, “Those who work deserve their pay!”
Continued blessing to the world
Continued blessing to the world
“Every third year you must offer a special tithe of your crops. In this year of the special tithe you must give your tithes to the Levites, foreigners, orphans, and widows, so that they will have enough to eat in your towns.
The latter half of chapter 14 echoes laws regarding tithing given in Leviticus 27 and Numbers 18. Tithing (the giving of one-tenth) accomplishes several purposes: it reminds the Israelites that their possessions (animals, produce, etc.) comprise gifts from a gracious God; supply sustenance for the Levites, who lack a tangible inheritance in the promised land; and provide occasions for family and community fellowship centered around the worship of God. Verses 24–26 allow the offerer who lives a distance from the central shrine to exchange his tithe for money, which he can easily carry on his journey to the sanctuary and then use to purchase food and/or drink to present once he arrives.

Release of economic slaves
No interest loans
Debt forgiven
“At the end of every seventh year you must cancel the debts of everyone who owes you money. This is how it must be done. Everyone must cancel the loans they have made to their fellow Israelites. They must not demand payment from their neighbors or relatives, for the Lord’s time of release has arrived.
