Joshua is a book named after its main character, Joshua, who leads Israel in conquering and distributing the land of Canaan among the twelve tribes of Israel
Key Verse - Joshua 11:23 “23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.”
Joshua along with Caleb was on of the twelve spies sent to spy out the land of Canaan over 40 years ago.
They were also the only two to report that they could go one and possess the land - but the other spies fear and reluctance lead to rebelling against God’s plans and causing them to wander in the wilderness for 40 years.
Joshua is known as the Moses minister
(Josh 1:1 “1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the Lord it came to pass, that the Lord spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,” )
Hosea (hoshea) was the name given to him when he was born in Egypt (Numbers 13:16)
Hosea means “salvation or deliverance”
Moses expanded his name by prefixing it to a form of YHWH
Joshua meant “Jehovah saves” or “Jehovah is salvation, deliverance”
Moses’ personal assistant and chosen successor
The Date:
According to I Kings 6:1 the exodus took place 480 years before the fourth year of Solomon’s reign
The date for the fourth year of Solomon is generally regarded as 966 B.C.
The exodus took place around 1446 B.C.
40 years in the wilderness
Campaign of Joshua began around 1405 B.C and lasted for 7 years
Basic Outline of Joshua
Entering Canaan Joshua 1-5.
God’s awesome challenge to Joshua (1:1-9)
Joshua receives a tremendous promise from God
Josh 1:5 “5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
But notice that Joshua’s encounter with God was different from Moses
We all can have a relationship with God but we will all have unique experiences just as Moses and Joshua
Joshua 1:8 “8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
gives three steps to Bible study.
First, keep listening to God’s Word. Keep reading it aloud. Don’t let it depart from your mouth or your mind.
Second, meditate on it. Mull it over in your imagination. Think about it when you drive to work and when you sit at home. Ponder it when you lie down and when you rise up.
Third, obey it—be careful to do everything in it. Then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. When we’re consistent in our daily devotions, it’s easier to be consistent in our daily duties
Joshua sends spies into Jericho (2:1-24)
Rahab the harlot hides the spies
Why there?
It was a good place to gather information
It was located on the city wall
God knew the heart and faith of the woman
The people were to consecrate themselves (3:5)
The priests were to carry the ark of the covenant (3:6-17)
God parted the Jordan and they cross on dry land
What four truths was the miracle of the dividing of the Jordan waters designed to teach Israel? (Josh 4:24
1) God is the living God;
2) He is among them;
3) He will without fail drive out the enemy (He rules over the affairs of the whole earth with a mighty hand);
4) They are to fear the LORD God forever).
24 That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the Lord your God for ever.
Memorial stones (12) were placed in the middle of Jordan (4:1-18)
Circumcision and the Passover (5:1-12)
All the men were to be circumcised
They observed the Passover
They named the place Gilgal – “to roll”
Gilgal became the temporary center of government and worship during the early conquest of the Promised Land
The manna ceased on the day they began to eat of the produce of the Promised Land
The Commander of the Lord’s Host is among them (Joshua 5:13-15 “13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? 14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the Lord am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? 15 And the captain of the Lord’s host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.”
This is evidently a theophany for at least two reasons:
He receives worship from Joshua,
He declares that the place on which Joshua is standing is holy ground
The significance of this incident is that the leader of Israel (Joshua) is placed in a position of subordination to the Great Captain of the Lord’s host. This makes Israel a theocracy (ruled by God), the instrument by which God will execute His judgment against the wicked inhabitants of the land
Conquest of Canaan Joshua 6-12.
Jericho (Josh 6:1-26)
Seven priests shall carry seven ram’s horns
The ark of the covenant is to be carried
March around the walls once a day for 6 days
March around the walls 7 times on the 7th day
BLOW THE TRUPMETS AND SHOUT!!
Rahab and her family were spared as was promised
They burned the city
The precious metals were kept for the treasury of the house of the Lord
Great Defeat follows Great Victory Due to Disobedience (Josh 7)
3,000 troops sent to AI
36 are killed and they flee in defeat
Achan’s sin is discovered
Family stoned and burned in Valley of Achor (Trouble)
After death of Achan - AI is defeated in Joshua 8.
Takes 30,000 valiant men
Ambushes with 5,000 men on west of Ai
Inhabitants destroyed (12,000) and city burned
Afterwards Joshua builds an altar on Mt. Ebal where they offer burnt and peace offerings
Joshua writes a copy of the law of Moses in stone
All of Israel stood on both sides of the ark - half in front of Mt. Ebal and half in front of Mt. Gerizim
Joshua reads all the law “every word” to all the people.
Joshua attacks the Southern kings and Cities (Josh 9-10)
Joshua attacks the Northern Kings and Cities (Josh 11-12)
Division of Canaan among the 9½ Tribes Joshua 13-22.
Levi received no earthly inheritance - their inheritance was the Lord (Josh 13:14,33) - although they are given 48 cities with pasture land sprinkled throughout the other tribes (Josh 21:41)
Hebron was given to Caleb for his inheritance
The six cities of refuge were established
Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh built a large altar near the Jordan river - Were the 2 ½ tribes out of God’s perfect will in their desire to possess the Transjordan land? (Josh 24:8 “8 And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand, that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.” ) (Ans. It was God’s will for the two and one half tribes to possess the Transjordan area. Anyone who suggests they stopped short from the “promised land” fail to properly regard this verse.)
The other’s were given their land on the other side of the river
Joshua’s Farewell message and death Joshua 23-24.
They are admonished to continue to faithfully love and serve God (23:1-11)
He warns them that if they ever turn away from the Lord that he will cause the surrounding nations to conquer them (23:12-16)
He reviews Israel’s history (24:1-13)
He calls them to choose whom they will serve (24:14-28)
Joshua’s death and burial (24:29-33)
we are left with this testimony
31 And Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the Lord, that he had done for Israel.
