i keep coming away from these sermons thinking, I’m not giving enough examples, pictures of what it looks like to be the family of God…so today is all about giving a clearer picture
Up-In-Out: Kingdom power (Gather for worship and prayer, apostles teaching, meals, signs and wonders, generosity) - missional
UP: this is about presence not what we think as worship (prayer....singing is meant to be a form of prayer, do we approach it that way?)
IN: This is about formation discipleship, not community (communitas as by-product) Made For This
OUT: Justice, Generosity, Proclamation
3 parts to the Up-In and out of FoM that we need.
-Spiritual Parents (direction comes from God through people)
-Predictable Patterns (Up in Out Ecclesiology)
-Missional Purpose (not for us, we exist for the world)
But to get the predictable patterns we need:
-Intentionality
-SP who gather
-Missional leaders who see needs around them
-SP who make disciples
-Margin and space to gather.
-reshaping our lives into up-in-out rhythms
this is what we want our MC to look like. and our lives…and our network.
Rhythms of Up-In-and Out
-Sundays are not good at formation and community
-Tables are not great for Practicing God’s Presence
-Mountain Tops are great for mission
-service events aren’t great for worship
We need all three.
Lets keep on with the SP, PP and MP of Jesus and what it looked like for the early church
Jesus as SP
-Chose his kids—more like adoption than obligation, same with the Oikos of the church
-@RH, we choose one another -> submission to a shared life
-It’s a two way choice, God calls, we answer
-same with us…no coercion, guilt or shame, just invitation and challenge
-Mark 1:16-20
Mark 1:16–20 NLT
One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” And they left their nets at once and followed him. A little farther up the shore Jesus saw Zebedee’s sons, James and John, in a boat repairing their nets. He called them at once, and they also followed him, leaving their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired men.
SP as teacher:
-SP should know more and live better
-Mark 1:21-27
Mark 1:21–27 NLT
Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach. The people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite unlike the teachers of religious law. Suddenly, a man in the synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, “Why are you interfering with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” But Jesus reprimanded him. “Be quiet! Come out of the man,” he ordered. At that, the evil spirit screamed, threw the man into a convulsion, and then came out of him. Amazement gripped the audience, and they began to discuss what had happened. “What sort of new teaching is this?” they asked excitedly. “It has such authority! Even evil spirits obey his orders!”
Authority is about embodiment, we are becoming like our Rabbi’s…so we follow one another in pursuit of following Jesus....
Just you + Bible + Holy Spirit is not enough to be formed in the way of the Kingdom. it requires community and mutual submission Eph 5:15-21
Ephesians 5:15–21 NLT
So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. And further, submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
This is the same for us. What does mutual submission look like:
-not battles between flesh and blood
-not battles over control and finances
-we listen first, discuss and discern together
-no manipulative power plays....God told me for you,… etc
We don’t see Jesus engaging in any of that.
-Jesus submitted himself to other Rabbi’s we see at the temple when he is 12
-He submitted to the leadership and put himself under the calling of His Cousin John
-He only did what the Father told him
When we don’t submit to one another, it is about control, our need to feed our egos, our need and demand for honor and places of recognition....
what made this possible for Jesus…His Identity was firm as a beloved child of God.
-the end is decided so we can trust in the mean time.
-the gates of hell will not prevail against the church
SP looks like comfort and healing..just like Jesus....
Jesus prayed blessings over people
He touched people and they were healed
Archer saw Grandma Robin praying and wanted to bless His friend Theo
SP is something we imitate....so we look at Jesus and SP in our lives....
Lots of freedom:
-Sends 72 out early
-confidence
-belief
-knew they had it in them: feeding the 5000
Mark 6:6–13 NLT
And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people. And he called his twelve disciples together and began sending them out two by two, giving them authority to cast out evil spirits. He told them to take nothing for their journey except a walking stick—no food, no traveler’s bag, no money. He allowed them to wear sandals but not to take a change of clothes. “Wherever you go,” he said, “stay in the same house until you leave town. But if any place refuses to welcome you or listen to you, shake its dust from your feet as you leave to show that you have abandoned those people to their fate.” So the disciples went out, telling everyone they met to repent of their sins and turn to God. And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people, anointing them with olive oil.
-@RH
-permission
-expectation
-shared ownership
-pastoral care
-Ongoing conversation and correction
-not about performance, about improvement
-culture of mutual honor and submission
-Jesus didn’t treat his disciples like children, we don’t treat you like children
-@RH we don’t lord positions over one another....position means submission and service
-Jesus doesn’t save people from a scary broken world
-he is with them in it
-used weakness and moral authority to protect them from religious zealots
-fundamentalism
-Taught through stories (we need to get better at this)
Mark 4:1–2 NLT
Once again Jesus began teaching by the lakeshore. A very large crowd soon gathered around him, so he got into a boat. Then he sat in the boat while all the people remained on the shore. He taught them by telling many stories in the form of parables, such as this one:
Kind when they are slow, explains to them so they can teach others.
Mark 4:13 NLT
Then Jesus said to them, “If you can’t understand the meaning of this parable, how will you understand all the other parables?
Give me some examples of places where you have seen great leadership that looks like Jesus
Lots of examples of where we have seen those who don’t look like Jesus
