Introduction:
The topic of the attributes of God is a vast and complex subject that has been explored by theologians and pastors throughout history.
As we examine the attributes of God, we discover His majesty, greatness, and love for us.
Let us take a closer look at some of these attributes, with the help of quotes from well-known preachers.
I. God is Omnipotent
I. God is Omnipotent
The first attribute of God we will explore is His omnipotence, or all-powerful nature.
God's power is demonstrated in His creation of the universe, His control over the forces of nature, and His ability to work miracles.
As Charles Spurgeon once said, "The power of God is like a great river; it is deep, it is wide, and it is never-ending."
"Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you." - Jeremiah 32:17 (ESV)
"For nothing will be impossible with God." - Luke 1:37 (ESV)
"For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God." - Deuteronomy 10:17 (ESV)
II. God is Omniscient
II. God is Omniscient
The second attribute of God is His omniscience, or all-knowing nature. God knows everything that has happened, everything that is happening, and everything that will happen in the future.
John Piper once said, "God's knowledge is not like our knowledge. Our knowledge is limited, and we often have to make guesses or assumptions. But God knows all things perfectly, all the time."
"Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure." - Psalm 147:5 (ESV)
"He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him." - Daniel 2:22 (NIV)
"O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar." - Psalm 139:1-2 (ESV)
III. God is Omnipresent
III. God is Omnipresent
The third attribute of God is His omnipresence, or all-present nature. God is not limited by time or space, and He is present in all places at all times.
A.W. Tozer once said, "God is here. Wherever we are, God is here. There is no place, there can be no place, where He is not."
"Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD." - Jeremiah 23:24 (ESV)
"Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!" - Psalm 139:7-8 (ESV)
"Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD." - Jeremiah 23:23-24 (ESV)
IV. God is Love
IV. God is Love
The fourth attribute of God is His love for us. God's love is demonstrated in His sacrificial death on the cross for our sins, as well as His continual care and provision for us.
Billy Graham once said, "God's love is like a river, constantly flowing and never-ending. It is a love that we can never fully comprehend, but one that we can always trust."
"But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." - Romans 5:8 (ESV)
"Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love." - 1 John 4:7-8 (ESV)
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16 (ESV)
illustration: that ties in all 4 attributes of God:
Think of a father teaching his child how to swim in a pool.
The father is omnipotent, he has the power to lift the child out of the water and keep them safe. He is omniscient, he knows how to teach the child the proper technique for swimming and can recognize when they need help. He is omnipresent, he is always with the child in the pool, guiding and protecting them. And he does all of this out of love, a reflection of God's loving character.
As the child learns to swim, they may become tired or scared, but the father is there to support and encourage them. The child's trust in the father grows as they see his power, knowledge, and presence in action, all motivated by his love for them.
Similarly, we can trust in God's omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence, knowing that He is always with us, guiding us and protecting us out of His love. Just as the child in the pool learns to trust their father's abilities and guidance, we can grow in our trust in God's character as we see His attributes in action in our lives.
Conclusion:
Conclusion:
The attributes of God are a vital aspect of our faith, as they help us to understand His character and nature. As we contemplate the majesty and greatness of God, let us be filled with awe and reverence for Him. Let us also take comfort in the fact that this same God who is all-powerful, all-knowing, and ever-present, is also a God who loves us deeply and unconditionally. As we go forth from this place, let us remember the words of the Psalmist, who said, "Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite" (Psalm 147:5, NASB).
The three primary attributes of God that are frequently discussed in theological discourse are His omnipresence, omniscience, and omnipotence.
Omnipresence:
Omnipresence:
This attribute refers to God's presence everywhere at the same time. God is not limited by time or space, and He is present in all places at all times.
7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.
Omniscience:
Omniscience:
This attribute refers to God's all-knowing nature. God knows everything that has happened, everything that is happening, and everything that will happen in the future.
5 Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.
God's knowledge is not limited by time or space, and He knows the thoughts and intentions of every human heart
13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
Omnipotence:
Omnipotence:
This attribute refers to God's all-powerful nature. God has the ability to do anything that is in line with His character and will.
17 “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.
God's power is demonstrated in His creation of the universe, His control over the forces of nature, and His ability to work miracles.
These three attributes of God are often used to describe His character and nature. They help us understand that God is not limited by time, space, or human limitations.
He is always present, always aware, and always able to accomplish His purposes. As we seek to know and understand God, these attributes help us to see His greatness, His majesty, and His love for us.
Is there anything that God cannot do?
Is there anything that God cannot do?
For example, God cannot lie (Hebrews 6:18 or act contrary to His nature, such as being unjust or unloving. G
18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.
God cannot change in His essential nature or character, as He is described as being the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
