Who is Christ?
What are some other names we use to refer to Him?
Jesus is our Savior and the Son of God, and so much more.
Tonight we are going to try and develop a more full understanding of who exactly Jesus is.
Colossians 1:15-20
15-
He is the image of the invisible God
All of who God is has been revealed in Christ.
Us being made in the image of God, and this being fixed once weve been saved are by the Holy Spirit being made to look more like Jesus.
Firstborn of all creation
He is the heir of all things- its all for Him
16-
There is nothing that was not created by Jesus. All things were created by Him.
Again they were not only created by Him, but also ultimately for Him.
All of creation was made in Him (focusing on Him), through Him( agent of creation) and for Him( meant for Him because He would redeem and purchase the world by His cross for God’s glory.)
17 -18a-
Christ is the sustainer of the universe. It keeps going because God will it to.
He is the head of the church.
The church exists because Christ gives it life.
He is also the head as He is the one who directs and leads the church.
18b-20
Christ is the first born from the dead, meaning He was brought back to life after dying on the cross.
What does it mean for Him to be the firstborn?
We are born again when we are saved. To come to Jesus is for our old life to die and for us to be made new by God.
As the firstborn He is also redeeming not just mankind but Christ is restoring the entire world which has been plagued by sin.
The cross is much bigger than punching a ticket to heaven. The cross is the means by which God is saving and restoring everything.
This also means that everything and everyone will one day bend the knee to Jesus. All of creation will recognize Christ as Lord.
Discussion Questions:
Is it strange to think of Jesus, not just as Savior but also Creator? How can it be encouraging?
Christ is the head of the church. Knowing this how should we respond/ act?
Read Rev. 21:1-8 . Often we reduce the cross to only punching a ticket to heaven. How is it encouraging/ challenging to know how much more It accomplishes?
