The Greek tense indicates continuous action, a continuous following moment by moment.
The word “light” is used 24 times in John’s gospel. In the prologue, we read in
John 1:9 “The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.”
Isaiah 42:6-7 (ESV)
6 “I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness; I will take you by the hand and keep you; I will give you as a covenant for the people, a light for the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world
That he gave his only begotten Son
that whoever believes in him
should not perish
but have everlasting life.
Source of light is God’s love
Danger of not having light is perishing
Switch of the light is believing
Power of the light is eternal life.
Light reveals the darkness
John 8:13-18 (ESV)
13 So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.”14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. 16 Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. 17 In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.”
John 3:19 (ESV)
19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil.
John 8:19 (ESV)
19 They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.”
Isaiah 9:2 (ESV)
2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.
Ephesians 5:13 (ESV)
13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible,
C.S. Lewis who said, “I believe in Christ like I believe in the sun. Not only because I see it, but because by it all things are seen.”
Light cleans
1 John 1:5-10 (ESV)
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

John 8:25-28 (Esv)
25 So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. 26 I have much to say about you and much to judge, but he who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” 27 They did not understand that he had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own authority, but speak just as the Father taught me.
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet

Psalm 43:3 (ESV)
3 Send out your light and your truth;
let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy hill
and to your dwelling!
Light is a source to life
John 8:21-24 (ESV)
21 So he said to them again, “I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews said, “Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 He said to them, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”
How do you respond to the light?
Follow it
Walk away from it
Pharisees lacked:
(19) Knowing who Jesus was, thus lacked the knowledge of the Father. (23) The right birth (they were from beneath; of this world. i.e. Worldly/fleshly only) (24) Believing in Jesus. (33) Knowing they were in bondage.
John 8:29-30 (ESV)
29 And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” 30 As he was saying these things, many believed in him.
Psalm 27:1 (ESV)
27 The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Isaiah 60:19-20 English Standard Version (ESV)
19 The sun shall be no more
your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon
give you light;
but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
20 Your sun shall no more go down,
nor your moon withdraw itself;
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your days of mourning shall be ended.
Revelation 21:22-26 (ESV)
22 And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb.23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, 25 and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. 26 They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations.
Share the light
Ephesians 5:7-14 (ESV)
7 Therefore do not become partners with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
