Theme: Be Humble
FCF: We have a problem with Pride
Introduction: Carrie and I have been undertaking a process known as Biblical Counseling Certification as a means of accountability in church-based counseling. These observations from James 4 are rooted in this study.
James’ Practicality
Circumstances of life to be more like Jesus
God, the giver of every perfect gift, offers wisdom to navigate life to please Him
Problem with Pride
Opposite of humility
Passions of a Proud Heart
Motivated by the desires of a proud heart
Actions lead to Conflict
Go it alone as receive opposition from God
Dissatisfied
Be Humble
Receive Grace
More than absence of conflict
The blessing of relationship with the Lord brings peace (by implication, since pride leads to conflict, humility would lead to the opposite)
Evidences of a Humble Heart
Submission to God and resistance of the devil (changed relationship)
Nearness to the Lord (changed fellowship)
Repentance
Changed behavior
Changed thoughts about sin
Changed attitude about sin
Fellowship with the Lord the result of a humble heart
Exalt can mean praise, likely not given James’ admonition against pride
Exalt can mean lift up closer to the Lord> thus motivated to be humble
