Colossians 1:15-20, 2:10
Introduction:
Our culture promotes a see it/need it mentality trying to convince us to buy to find satisfaction. Unfortunately, blossoming technology has this effect on me (i.e. the iPad). However, what does the Bible say truly satisfies? And if it does truly satisfy what should be our response? Tonight I desire for us to understand that:
Thesis: Because Christ is FIRST above all, He alone fully satisfies those who trust in Him.
Christ’s Supremacy
Because of His unique position Christ is first above all.
He is 1st because He is the direct image God. (Colossians 1:15)
Christ favors God perfectly because He is God. (John 1:1)
Christ favors Him in power.
Power over health (Mark 2:12-Healing of Paralytic)
Power over creation (Matthew 8:23-27-Sea is Calmed in a Storm)
Power over demons (Luke 4:31-37-Christ heals a demoniac on the Sabbath)
Christ favors Him in authority.
Authority to forgive sins (Exodus 34:7, Forgiveness is the God-thing to do; Mark 2:1-12, God alone can forgive sins)
Authority to commission gospel laborers (Matthew 28:18-20, The Great Commission, authority derived from His undeniable resurrection)
Christ favors Him in love.
God is love and no greater love is displayed than in the sacrifice of a person’s life.
God is love and displayed His love through Calvary. (I John 4:8-10)
Christ lovingly and willingly sacrificed Himself for mankind. (John 15:13)
Christ loved the Father perfectly and admonished believers to do the same. (Matthew 22:37)
Love God with all your heart.
Love God with all of your soul.
Love God with all of your mind.
Christ displays to man the invisible God.
Those who have seen Christ have seen the Father. (John 14:9)
Christ’s life explains Who God is. (John 1:18)
He is 1st because He is the preeminent over all creation that belongs to Him. (V.16)
Christ is preeminent in existence. (John 1:1)
Christ is preeminent in possession.
He is 1st because He is Creator. (V.16)
He created all things found in the heavens and earth.
He created both the invisible and the visible.
He created all human authority.
He created all things for Himself.
He is 1st because He is the Head of the Church. (V.18)
He is 1st because He is the firstborn of the dead. (V.18)
He is 1st because He is the Reconciler of all mankind to God. (V.20) *Ques.1-6
Christ’s Satisfaction
Because He is God, Christ alone satisfies those who trust in Him. (2:10)
He satisfies spiritually.
He is all that we need for salvation.
For forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:13)
For righteousness. (Romans 3:25-26)
He is all that we need for righteous living.
He has provided The Comforter.
The Comforter convicts. (John 16:7-11)
The Comforter instructs. (John16:13)
He has provided His life as an example. (Philippians 2:5-8)
He humbly submitted in obedience to the Father.
He humbly served those whom He created.
He humbly suffered an undeserved cross kind of death.
He satisfies only those who trust in Him.
Book written to Colossians believers. (Colossians 1:2)
Faithful, dedicated to their faith in Christ.
Brethren, among the family of God through faith in Christ.
Those outside of Christ will never be satisfied until they come to faith in Christ.
Eternal treasures outlast physical ones. (Matthew 6:20)
Eternal pleasures outlast physical ones. (Moses chose to believe this, Hebrews 11:25-26) *Ques.7-10
Conclusion:
Our Christ is first, no if ands or buts about it. There is none like Him in power, authority, preeminence, or position. Only He is able to do the amazing things spoken of here in this passage. These all come together to tell us of our Savior Who is able to save us from our sins. We need not look anywhere else but to the Lord and He will deliver us. Because Christ is first above all, He alone fully satisfies those who trust in Him.
