1 Peter 2:21 - 23 - Following Jesus to the Cross Introduction “God has an incredible calling for your life!” Phrases like this are common in modern Christianity. They are often followed by a push for you to dream bigger dreams and believe that God will make you great.
Today I (Pastor Wes) want you to notice the calling God has for you. God’s calling is not to make you great, wealthy, or important in this world. His calling is that you would follow Him in suffering while in this world.
I want to challenge you, as you study and discuss 1 Peter 2:21-23, to embrace the humility of Christ. The call of the Christian is to take up our crosses and follow Him. For many of us, we desire a faith that requires no sacrifice, or even a faith which brings us worldly abundance.
Cross-reference verses: ● Philippians 2:5-8Matthew 16:24, 5:38 - 44Romans 8:18, 31, 37-39
Digging Deeper - Key Questions from Reading the Text
1. What does it mean to be “called” to something?
2. The two things that the text lists Jesus as examples are that He “committed no sin and no deceit was found in His mouth”. In other words, His actions and words. What specific examples from Jesus’ life do you find inspiring?
3. What emotion(s) do you have when you read verse 23? How does this impact your life? Key Insights/ Critical Messages
● God has placed a calling on your life.
● How you respond to mistreatment and suffering matters.
● A sacrificial life is rooted in faith. Life Application Questions What does this teach us about God and the way He has worked and is working? What does this teach us about ourselves and our lives? How are we like the people in the stories? How do we apply the lesson to become more Christ-like?
● What does God’s calling on your life look like? (If you aren’t sure, ask other people in your CGS group what they have noticed.)
● How do you respond to mistreatment and suffering? Do you need to shift this?
● How do you embrace the humility of Christ?
● Does your faith match the call to die to yourself, take up your cross, and follow Jesus? If so, what does it look like? If not, what might you change?
