Matthew 20:9–15 NASB95
9 “When those hired about the eleventh hour came, each one received a denarius. 10 “When those hired first came, they thought that they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. 11 “When they received it, they grumbled at the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last men have worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden and the scorching heat of the day.’ 13 “But he answered and said to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 ‘Take what is yours and go, but I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. 15 ‘Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with what is my own? Or is your eye envious because I am generous?’

The parable of the vineyard owner demonstrates that a generous heart blesses everyone without considering the worldly logic that would otherwise surround money.
Luke 12:16–21 (NASB95)
16 And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive.
17 “And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
19 ‘And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.” ’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’
21 “So is the man who stores up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”

Five Postures of Generosity

Tithing - Malachi 3:10
Malachi 3:10 NASB95
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.
Genesis 4:4 NASB95
Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and for his offering;
Genesis 14:20 NASB95
And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” He gave him a tenth of all.
Genesis 28:22 NASB95
“This stone, which I have set up as a pillar, will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”
2 Chronicles 21:5 NASB95
Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.
Leviticus 27:30–32 NASB95
‘Thus all the tithe of the land, of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord’s; it is holy to the Lord. ‘If, therefore, a man wishes to redeem part of his tithe, he shall add to it one-fifth of it. ‘For every tenth part of herd or flock, whatever passes under the rod, the tenth one shall be holy to the Lord.
Tithing is the base level “clearing of the land” of our hearts that demonstrates that all of the growth and sustaining input in our lives comes from the Lord. Since Carolyn and I made the decision to faithfully tithe, we have had seasons of lots of money, seasons with less in the bank, and through it all we have grown to a point where we can agree with Paul, that in much or in lack, we remain confidently hoping in God. We have both worked consistently while we have also served the Lord, and it is SO MUCH BETTER to go to your job with the understanding that HE is the one who is providing for you, and your work is really unto Him.
Tithing helps us know that it was never really OUR money to begin with, and Tithing clears out the stones of doubt, unbelief and even offense.
For the sake of your hearts being at peace and your lives being ordered correctly, that money would have no mastery over you, or hooks in your heart, I encourage you to discover the freedom and joy that come along with tithing.
Sowing
Luke 6:36–38 NASB95
“Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. “Do not judge, and you will not be judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned. “Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”
2 Corinthians 9:6–12 NASB95
Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed; as it is written, He scattered abroad, he gave to the poor, His righteousness endures forever.” Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God.
Giving
Luke 12:33 NASB95
“Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves money belts which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys.
Proverbs 19:17 NASB95
17 One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord, And He will repay him for his good deed.
Lending
Psalm 112:5 NASB95
5 It is well with the man who is gracious and lends; He will maintain his cause in judgment.
Psalm 15:5 (NASB95)
5 He does not lend out his money at interest,
Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent.
He who does these things will never be shaken.
Hosting
Titus 1:7–8 NASB95
7 For the overseer must be above reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain, 8 but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,
