Alright again, we want to welcome each of you here to Bethel Assembly. It's just great to have you here today. So many good-looking people, you know, Yes, still and just good to have you here. We're so excited. Just once again to be here. God, God is just good and his word just guides Us in. So got a message this morning. And and so we're going to talk about how to run or break through the tackle of Temptation. I know, we're kind of through football season but you have a pastor who played football and that's like the only sport I really sit and watch. So others, just so much to it. And so when we talked about Temptation today, I want to just kind of help you think through it and a mindset that temptation is a thing and it's there that just if we allow it, Can tackle, you can trip. Just trip you up but tackle, you take you down, you know, keep you down and put you out if you don't know how to escape or if you don't know how to make it through. And so this morning if it's alright, I'd like to just walk with us a little bit through Temptation and how to break that tackle, how to break through and how to to make that? We're getting a really high ring here. If y'all can help us out with that, give them a hand as well. They both work back there and Connor has his done a great job today. So anyhow if you want, but before we do so if you would just bow your heads with me by close your eyes, let's just take a moment. In Focus ourselves to God's word diligence, I love. And I thank you, Lord. I Thank you for this day in this time and once again just a chance to be here, Worship together to be in your presence but also Lord to hear from you. It's all right. Now I pray in this moment. Or that you would just annoying me to speak your word. What I pray for every person that is in the sound of my voice, whether they're here in person or listening to this later online. Lord that you would speak to us but up on our ears that we hear what you have to say.

Holy Spirit, just challenged US. Shane just let this word from you today. Equip us. To walk victorious in our lives. As you have called us to in Jesus name, amen? So we're going to talk about Temptation. We're going to talk about the trip and the pitfalls but how to break through the tackle of temptation. But you can stay on your feet and keep running and make it to the end, you know, my my grandfather taught and preached many many times to fight the good fight, right? Paul Road. It and said I fought the good fight. I finished the race, right? What we've got to get through the tackle of Temptation to get there to the end zone, did he to the end? And so I want to just talk to you about that a little bit today. You know what? Temptation is one of those things that that nobody is exempt from you. Don't wait, we understand Temptation. Matter of fact, there's even a TV show at one point called Temptation Island which was nothing about nothing but I never watched it. I just saw the title in that was enough for me to know that was a show, just not to even get into but it sits there. And that there's a lot of things and a lot of ID. Is in a lot of thoughts on Temptation and so I just want to cuddle with you but we're going to be our main text is going to be James chapter 1, verses 13 through 18. And if you would just turn with me and let's just start by by giving some attention to God's word and then what kind of pull from there. What I believe God has to say, and he said don't blame God. When you are tempted, God cannot be tempted by evil. And he does not use evil to tempt others. We are tempted by our own desires, that dragged us off and trap us. Our desires, make us sin. And When sin is finished with us, it leaves us dead. Empty. Don't be fooled. My dear friends, every good and perfect. Gift comes from the father who created all the lights in the heavens. He is always the same and never makes Dark Shadows. By changing. He wanted us to be his own special people, and so he sent the true message to give us new birth or new line. There's a lot to unpack here from James and into, let me just start. We got to understand Temptation before, we can break through it, with got to understand what it is, we got understand some, some things about Temptation. And so, if you would, I'd like to kind of go through just a few myths about Temptation and that and just bust those for you. Anybody ever watched MythBusters that TV show that used to be out to some of my science guys in here, right? And I used to love that show MythBusters at it. For those that didn't know about it, you can I think still find it on the History Channel on demand or whatever? But the, but it was a couple of guys, they were former stunt or special effects artists and and they would just go through and say, okay, so there's a lot of Miss mainly about movies but then they got into all kinds of things and they would spend the show scientifically testing things. And showing could this really happen the way it happens on screen or the way out, the old wives tales have always told us in and they would use ballistics gel and, you know, test, all kinds of theories. I remember one of the ones that I was. Was was so cool. Was it was they tested, you know, you seen movies all the time, where people go underwater, you know, and then bullets are shooting at them and then to see if they really are all safe for how deep do you have to get underwater to be safe? And it was kind of cool they set up, you know, all kinds of gun shot into water, head ballistics gel to can attest that the impact and the larger. The gun is the larger that the ammunition. Actually, the shallower that it would penetrate water. It was amazing, the power of the surface tension that water that that at the top of the water was, it was the smaller more like a 22 that would actually be more dangerous to somebody underwater that would go further that the larger bullets because of the surface tension and the volume that the massive power, they would just disintegrate when they hit the the, the top of the water and said they busted that meth or there. Always one hand. Over the 10-second rule, right? You don't tell me about you dropped something on the floor, you know? And was the second rule, pick it, back up by her 3-second rule, you know, whatever will they did one where they actually went with swabs and they swab the different Services carpet tile, you know different places. They I think they even used toothbrushes and a bathroom and you know whatever and then they let him culture and then see which one you know that and they timed it three. Second swab 5 seconds, while 10-second swap to see, you know, if that three second rule was right. And so hopefully, this is the only thing you remember from the message today. It's obviously one of the only things I remember from the show, but they actually proved That's at 3 second and 10-second rule were true depending on the surface. Now on carpet, it was 3 seconds that the five and 10 seconds swabs had bacteria and things on them from carpet and it tells you, how much carpet carries you don't want to think about it, but from tile or hard surfaces. It took ten. It was the 10-second swab before it showed any kind of bacteria or anyting self lesson learned if it's on carpet, 3-second rule. If it's on hard surfaces, 10-second, rule is right. So either way,

So, or just don't even play around with it, you know. And, and it either way, it just depends on how important it is. To you have a good, the sucker is, right? So can we meet for a few minutes? Talk about the myths of Temptation. We know the word temptation. But let me just kind of go through some things. Some things you probably been told About Temptation that may not have been, right? And it probably caused you to trip up yourself just because of these myths. So number one, Is that God temps Christians.

A lot of times we go into hard trials and do different things, and, and we go into moments, and, and we think that those things came from God. We we, we have this idea, sometimes that that God is tempting me. God doesn't tempt. Us know. We go back to what we just read today. James, he said don't blame God when you are tempted. Don't blame God. When you're tempted. God, doesn't tempt us. God cannot be tempted by evil, and he doesn't use evil to tempt others. So Temptation does not come from God. Now, there are times when we go through trials and tests that God allows us to But understand. When you are being tempted, it is not from God. Okay. And so it does not come from God now. We understand to it comes from, right? Unless you probably start thinking Satan, but if you continue to read in James, what did he actually say The Temptations? Come from ourselves, right me. My selfish desires are what tempt me. And so that's another one really? I mean, Satan uses that and I think he plays a part in the Temptation he sets traps But understand the Temptation. Truly comes from my own personal selfish desires. And so, miss busted God. Does not tempt Christians. All right, God. Also, there's another one that a lot of times we thought is that God can't relate to my Temptations. The God can't relate to my Temptations. It's A lot of times when we're going through something, that's another one that the enemy likes, I think to get us into his to think that all nobody else, knows what you're going through and especially God, God doesn't have a clue. God's perfect, right? He's Divine and he is perfect and he is divine but how many of you know when God when Jesus came and walked on this Earth? He was 100% God and 100% man, correct? And so if that's true and don't try to figure that out the old jeans are still doing it, and that's where there's all kinds of debates. Just noticed he was 100%, got him one hundred percent man, we'll figure it out when we get to heaven. All right. That's an idea that we just can't quite fathom, so don't try. But he was 100% God. 100% man if he was home, one hundred percent man, then that means that he was tempted. Just like you and I if he was 100% man, then that means he had selfish desires.

He had Flash not just flesh and Bone but he had his own desires as well that he had to overcome and so he did and so we could go into quite a bit but Hebrews 2:18 tells us for since he himself is now been through suffering and Temptations He knows what it is like when we suffer and are tempted. And he is wonderfully able to help us. You know, Jesus before he ever started his ministry, you know, we know the story, he did a 40-day fast Supernatural, and at the end of the fast, when he would have been at his weakest. Can you imagine going 40 days without water or food? Yeah, we weave. I've tried a few times, even just do three days of of, like, no food and only water. And I usually don't make it too well, and using the first part of any kind of fast we do, when I start getting angry, you know, you know, an inn, you start. Acting ways with your family and you going. Where did that come from? I'm not like this. And and then you sit down with, Johnny goes, oh no, you are. It's just coming to the top cuz you're hungry, right? When you're weak. Enzo picture. I mean, Jesus, after 40 days of fasting would have been at his weakest and we all know the story he was tempted.

And he was tempted, three ways. And they were big Temptations. It was all the power in the world. Which we might think that wasn't a Temptation cuz God really is already all powerful but there was ever, there was a Temptation there.

He's sensitive do if you're hungry 40 days of no food and water don't you know he was hungry and you got the power turn that rock into into bread, right? And we know the story, we know that Jesus did not fall to the temptation. He understand when you're tempted. even though he was perfect and didn't fall to it, He's been tempted. He understands God understands. He can relate to your temptation.

I got one in there, twice and my notes at least.

Another myth. Is it? Some Temptations are just too strong for me.

Some Temptations are just too strong is what what? I've heard her or I just, I can't overcome it. 1st Corinthians. 10:13 says, but remember this The wrong desires that come into your life. Aren't there's nothing new Under the Sun. Many others have faced exactly the same problems before you and no temptation is irresistible. You can trust God to keep the Temptation from becoming so strong that you cannot eat that. You can't stand up against it. She has promised this and will do what he says. He will show you how to escape Temptations power. So that you can bear up patiently against it. And So within this verse is actually to, first of all, there is not a Temptation that is too irresistible that you can't overcome it with God's help.

now, let's be honest, there are some temptations that in and of ourselves, we cannot overcome right. But with God's help you can't number to another bit that's in here that I think I mistyped in my notes but

and I don't know if it's in the tide of the slides are not but you are not alone. You're not the only person that is dealing with the Temptation. You're dealing with You're not alone as he said, there is said many others have faced exactly the same problems. You Know, The Enemy would like you to think that you're the only person that keeps falling to what you're falling to.

But you know, it's fun when we get together and start sharing, sometimes we start finding the situation may be slightly different, but the Temptation is the same.

We all know you're not alone. You're not dealing with something that nobody else in this world has never dealt with before. The Temptations are the same and they're not too strong for you. so, The truth about temptation.

First of all, temptation isn't sin? Can just shut your who's the truths. Temptation is not sin. it's another hook that the enemy has gotten, as many times in and when were tempted, we feel like we've sinned Temptation is the enticement to sim?

It's not till you give in to the Temptation and act on it that you're sinning. Does that make sense?

I've watched far too many people in even Within Myself at times, we're just being tempted to do something and you feel horrible that you were even tempted to do it, right? And end it does reveal something that there was a desire there that I didn't like but the Temptation is not a sin in itself. Okay.

All Christians experience temptation. I don't care how good the preacher that gets up and tells you how good they are is or seems to be all of us face Temptation, okay? Nobody's exempt. But also again, others have overcome Temptation before you. There are people in this room that may have dealt with what you would do. You may not even know, it may not even dream it because they've overcome it to a point. That it's not even an issue anymore. If you sit find out, there are others that have overcome it and they can tell you how to overcome it. We're in this together. Until can I give you just a couple of things here today? And

I want to share with you how to run from temptation.

See Jesus. In Matthew 41 through 11 and I won't read the whole thing but I kind of reference to his temptation each time that Jesus was tempted. He responded with scripture with God's word.

He responded back with what was truth. And what he did was he was refocusing, refocusing himself.

Jesus even told he said run from all these evil things and work instead at what is right and good learning to trust him and love others to be patient and gently.

Fist fight on for God. Hold tightly to the eternal life. That God has given you.

So you run From Evil things. The way to break through temptation. If the Run.

Many of us know, the story of Joseph. Are you was tempted by Potter, buy it by his master's wife, right? And it says that he ran leaving his coat. Meaning, she grabbed hold of him, and he ran leaving his coat to flee. The temptation.

cuz he knew if he stood there and continue even though he knew what was right, but if he stayed there and continue to flirt with the temptation, Hit ball. So, he ran from it. And so run. I've got acrostic for you. And so those are you there, taking notes, if you'll just write run, you know, are you in? And I'll give you a feeling here, but first of all, for running is read God's word.

Read God's word.

Jesus answered every Temptation with God's word and in and reset his desire, he may have been hungry for bread but he looked at Satan and said you shut, you know he said wait we live on the word of God. Anytime my bread is God's word, not that. Any refocus desires based on what God's word was. And if you aren't reading God's word, you don't have it in you to be able to use it to redirect. You got to read God's word. And then use the power of the Holy Spirit.

The holy spirit is called the paraclete toast in the Greek numerous times, which simply means that he is the comforter. He's the one that comes alongside. It's on your being tempted, know this, the Holy Spirit which was the same. Holy spirit, that was alongside Jesus. The son and aiding him to not fall to temptation is the same, Holy Spirit. That's a long side of you. Now,

The bottom line, don't try to fight the Temptation by yourself. Lean in on the Holy Spirit and allow him to give you the strength to change your desire.

And then never go without asking. Ask God for help.

And again, if we come back down 2, it's a desire, right? Temptation really isn't even a work of Satan. That he may give us prompts. He may try to give us nudges. He may try to turn your eye to see something. But when we realize Temptation, truly is our desire. For something that's not wholly or right. It is my wrong desire for this or that. So, the real key here, when I ask, what I'm asking is for God, to help me redirect my desire.

I remember his word and what is good, as he said, run from what is evil and instead at what is right and good. So I have to use God's word to hunt to remind myself, even though my desire says this looks good. I know that what God has for me is better. In his work and then I lean on the power of the Holy Spirit to help me. Remember what that maybe and look for that promise. And then I asked God to help me and hear that it looks as if they got right now. I want this. But I want you more help me to make this right decision. Help me to redirect myself and do what I know is, right.

So you run from the temptation.

And in that football analogy you know, breaking through a tackle, how many of you when you fall into temptation? You know I mean it it tackles you it, if you let it grabs, hold of you and it seems, it can take you down to where all momentum, everything is lost. One of the best ways of running back, breaks a tackle. It when, when I was in, when, when I worked, as a running back for like, kind of played a lot of the different positions over my time before I settled into being a strong safety, but, but when I was trying out for running back or one of the biggest things, they taught us was to keep your feet moving. Keep your feet moving with somebody else. Has you tied up when they're trying to to wrap you up and take you down. The biggest thing you do is you do you drop your shoulders, try to keep your Center forward and you keep moving your feet. You keep pushing and driving some. Some of those guys that break tackles, if you want, they just keep running. Somebody else hits them or gets a hold of them. They keep their feet driving to keep their feet moving in eventually. When they break the tackle, whether they may have added a stiff arm to it or they may have done a real show a Twist move, right? You know, and spun out of it. But within all of those steps, the real key is that they keep their feet moving and they keep pushing your. Sometimes they do get tied up and then one of the lineman or one of the other big guys come over and kind of helped push and then they were able to kind of Break Free. Whatever it may be, the key element is is they keep Running the moment, they stop running. It's done, isn't it? And so even when you're fighting with a Temptation, the element is to keep running. Keep your feet moving, keep picking up and keep going, keep pushing. Kept pressing forward, fight the good fight, press onward towards the goal, right?

I got at least one amen. There.

Press on to the goal push on, keep fighting, keep running. Keep keep going, don't let it tackle, you and and capture in and end your run.

Okay. Just keep running, keep picking up, keep refocusing, keep running reading, God's word and allowing it to help you keep relying on the Holy Spirit, to give you strength and to come in and maybe help block off some of that that that just those distractions, whatever it may be. And keep realigning. Your focus. Don't look at the Temptation. Look at the end. Look at the goal, right?

And so you keep running.

Let me tell you, there's even one more step that I tell you to do. Keep running. But what I've learned to Is sometimes let's be a little bit more proactive. And I have learned how to put up Hedges of protection. In my life. When when Amanda and I were engaged and we were going through premarital counseling.

Randall. Duncan the man that married us and and and did the counseling. He handed me a book. I don't think he handed her the same the book when he put we had he and I had a couple meetings in and he handed me a book that was called building hedges. An old book was about practices of things you can do to put hedges around your marriage to protect it. And any handed me that is as this young groom, you know, to be and and I and it still applies to two things, no matter what the Temptation is. I've learned that the safety is not just relying on myself to be able to run through it every time. But setup Hedges set up, fences setup protection for yourself that you don't ever have to deal with some of those Temptations. I had friends in high school, that that knew my commitment to Purity and, and, and I remember playing times they would, they would be to be on the bus rides home from football games or whatever. And, and they both come and go as well. Just say, if you are in so and so's bedroom, you know, and, and this opportunity arise what would you do? Would you be able to walk away? And I'm going, well, I'm never going to end up in the bedroom alone with them. As a teenage boy, I understood my protect my hair, I'm not going to try to run through that Temptation, you know, I was smart enough to know. I'm just not going to get in the room alone, so it didn't, that's never a temptation. And so I was they would look at me, that's then I'm just going, it's not going to happen, you know. Do the same. Protect yourself. When you fall from a Temptation, don't just try to get back up and then hope you can run through it next time. Look at the situation and say what could I have done to never allowed myself to be there? How can I protect myself from this temptation that way? I'm never tempted and I don't have to worry about falling. and so, always be ready to run. I understand it's better to protect yourself.

Ahead of time. from the things situations or people that you might end up needing to run from Let me tell you, you can do it. So they're going to put up one more acrostic. I unlike acrostics and I think somebody military guys, you know, probably used to that as well. So let me give you an acrostic for protect always be ready for the attack and protect yourself from temptation. So the p is, is first of all, the power of the Holy Spirit,

Protect yourself. Rely on the power of the Holy Spirit to give you strength. Resist the devil.

You know, we miss this so many times. But Jesus told us a very simple thing. You said, if you resist the devil, he must flee.

Sometimes we picture of resisting, the devil is this ongoing battle. Like I'm resisting the devil but he's, you know, winning the battle. No. If you resist the devil, he must flee. Problem is, is most of us when we stand face-to-face with a battle with the Enemy, we don't know how to really resist him.

You know where it where it may be too polite and times when we shouldn't be polite, let's just be honest with the light with the Enemy, please don't bother with me with that right now.

You need to put your foot down.

And tell him to get behind you. and know that as a child of God, if you resist him, if you tell him, no, It says he must flee don't even say that he will flee. It says he must.

Fleek. And there's not this big chain of of prayers that I can give you a mean. Wait we've made a lot of different things out of that. It's simple. You tell him no. Tell him, no. When you get to that point of saying, I'm done with this, no.

They have kids. And we try it first please. Right now, whatever, right? But when you get to that point of know like, you know, some of us in our spirit, you keep following the things because you need to get to that point where you look at the enemy and just like I'm done with this. Leave me alone. Right, you get me? Good. I won't do it again then. So

Rely on the power of the Holy Spirit but also resist. The devil open God's word. Some of this is repetitive for a reason. Okay. It's important that you read God's word that you know, God's word. We have the blessing of having God's word and we have multiple apps you could download. There's there's we got a card for one called Bible. Is that that will verbally read it to you and it's dramatically real re-enacted, it's actually really cool and easy to listen to. It's not just, you know, Melancholy kind of reading of God's word. It sits by brings it to life. So if you have a hard time really sitting down and looking to read, listen to it, whatever it is, but we have no excuse in our day and time. Read God's word, cuz if you haven't read it, you don't know it and if you don't know it, you can't rely on it. And allow it to change things. Thought control. She thought, control control your thoughts. A lot of times, we let our thoughts control us. And we need, there's a whole nother message. I still have a few minutes but I can't get into this in depth. But get this learn how to control your thoughts, instead of allowing your thoughts to control you. That's not Temptation. Work this how the enemy works at first, he gives you a little prompt, a little thought and then we play with it. We fantasize with it, I wonder what it would be like if I did that. Right. And it starts with thought and thought is not to send. The Temptation is not descend, what it went when you're maybe fantasizing about what it would be like to do that. That's not the sin, that's the Temptation. That's all the sudden, your desires and started linking on to the thought. If you think about something long enough, you'll either stay or do it. I'm going to be playing with you, but that's that's how it works. Then in their brain studies, that will show you that the more you think about something, the more you get lean to that. And once you act on it actually creates I'm not going to harm you in any way on this, but it creates the neurological link between the thought and the action. And then guess what? It's easier to do it. Next time, it takes less thought it takes less mind in and that's why we get in those Cycles. And what we have to do is learn how to control the thought, cuz then what happens, you thought controls you because then you think about it and do it impulsively because you created the route for your brain to that action. And then we be controlled by our thoughts. And we've got to learn how to control our thoughts.

You know, Timothy Paul tells us he said, take captive every thought and I love that the Greek word, therefore, take captive her control is, is, is actually the only way to really fully extract that word. It would be to take it at the end of a spear and escorted out. I want you to get that mental picture, that was the Greek word for us to really truly on packet for paint. When it when they read that, that's what they understood. It was an active word that, that would have been to take something at the end of the sphere and escort it out or way. So, what that means is when those thoughts come in your mind, get out your spiritual shotgun. God's word. Take it captive, so you're not going to take control of me. Walk it out the front door, then call the Holy Spirit, the police, right? And then take it away. Virginia Tech control, your thoughts are not your thoughts will control you. So thought control Escape, sometimes I just be sometimes we played with the temptation to the point, we get in the spot where like we start thinking that Biff that I can't get out of it that it's just too strong for me.

And in scripture, God tells us that he will always give us an escape to every temptation. Now, there's a lot of things to teach on this, but here's what I found. There's there is always a point of return. No return in a temptation. God will give you an escape, he will give you a moment when it's your Escape when it's your time to choose. Just stopped that path. Or go on it. That escaped again is in your mind. And when we understand first, that the Temptation is our desire. See the Temptation is you.

The source of them. Temptation is your desires? The Escape sometimes, maybe physical. But most of the time what it is is there's a point in your mind when you come to that moment, where you know that what you're contemplating is wrong. And you have a choice.

And it's at that moment you're choosing desires. That's the Xscape when I can decide, okay?

And I have to either. I want you more than this. Help me break from it, and he will. Or you choose. I'm set. I'm doing this. It looks good, right? And we decide. What we're going to do. Now, that escape moment a lot of times happens. when it is kind of like,

Wait with kids at Youth Camp. A lot of times we have this. This thing that it's a zip line that goes across the canyon And a lot of kids, get all the way up to the line to jump. you know, and then I'll send they look down and realize just how high they are. and that's their last point of Escape you either jump in or you're not And there's a few you know that will stand there for 5 minutes and it was like, come on, I'm ready to go, right?

And every Temptation. There's that moment where you're going to LEAP out into it, and you can choose. now, for those that don't jump, that have common sense as my wife would say,

I'm the one that jumps backwards and leans back Renown, does it does it all? But

Either way. When they make that choice of saying, I'm going to escape this. Then there's a process of disconnecting. Then they go and they get the harness off. MSI. I'm dial cab looked at that and it didn't look as cool as everybody said it was. And they walk away.

The hard part is it sometimes when we get to that point of Xscape, you're in the middle of people.

You're going to have to say, you know what guys? Idriss I really can't do this. Wait. We many times as youth Pastors in and I still exist in this today but wait till teenagers. All the time with your out with buddies and all the sudden get into that moment, I'd tell him you got my phone number call me and said, I'll be your Escape. You've got to open invitation for a coke at 10:30 at night Sonic Coke, whatever. That's on said, you just don't know what I remember my youth, pastor, and I were supposed to meet for a Coke at Sonic is going to take me to get that. You can just call me and say, hey.
