One Big Family 5/6

1 Timothy 5:1–2 NLT
1 Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers. 2 Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters.
The idea of a family is to honor those of older age.
Coach those who are younger.
Love those like you would your own birth Mother.
Protect those as if you were protecting your blood sister.
When it talks about Elder it’s any man over 50. Which means Timothy was without doubt younger then that.
Leviticus 19:32 NLT
32 “Stand up in the presence of the elderly, and show respect for the aged. Fear your God. I am the Lord.
How are we one family in the Lord?
Ephesians 1:5 NLT
5 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.
So since we are family then we have a responsibility to exact verse 3.
1 Timothy 5:3–10 NLT
3 Take care of any widow who has no one else to care for her. 4 But if she has children or grandchildren, their first responsibility is to show godliness at home and repay their parents by taking care of them. This is something that pleases God. 5 Now a true widow, a woman who is truly alone in this world, has placed her hope in God. She prays night and day, asking God for his help. 6 But the widow who lives only for pleasure is spiritually dead even while she lives. 7 Give these instructions to the church so that no one will be open to criticism. 8 But those who won’t care for their relatives, especially those in their own household, have denied the true faith. Such people are worse than unbelievers. 9 A widow who is put on the list for support must be a woman who is at least sixty years old and was faithful to her husband. 10 She must be well respected by everyone because of the good she has done. Has she brought up her children well? Has she been kind to strangers and served other believers humbly? Has she helped those who are in trouble? Has she always been ready to do good?
She must be one who has been an example, a model of Christ to others. When people see her they should see the love of God in her.
8. Is clear that if you are a follower of Christ then you have the responsibility to take care of your own. Don’t put that burden on the church, for this is not a good example to the world.
1 Timothy 5:11–16 NLT
11 The younger widows should not be on the list, because their physical desires will overpower their devotion to Christ and they will want to remarry. 12 Then they would be guilty of breaking their previous pledge. 13 And if they are on the list, they will learn to be lazy and will spend their time gossiping from house to house, meddling in other people’s business and talking about things they shouldn’t. 14 So I advise these younger widows to marry again, have children, and take care of their own homes. Then the enemy will not be able to say anything against them. 15 For I am afraid that some of them have already gone astray and now follow Satan. 16 If a woman who is a believer has relatives who are widows, she must take care of them and not put the responsibility on the church. Then the church can care for the widows who are truly alone.
The idea behind verse 11 is the only place you will see in the NT. καταστρηνιάω (katastrēniaō), vb. be governed by strong physical desire. “to burn fiercely,” “to be covetous,” “to be sensually stimulated.
So the idea is for them to marry while they still have their zeal. It’s all good, It’s all God.
1 Corinthians 7:9 NLT
9 But if they can’t control themselves, they should go ahead and marry. It’s better to marry than to burn with lust.
1 Corinthians 7:2 NLT
2 But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman should have her own husband.
You ever wonder why the Govt. assistance program is broken? look at verse 13.
Now we talk about the expectations of Church Leadership.
1 Timothy 5:17–22 NLT
17 Elders who do their work well should be respected and paid well, especially those who work hard at both preaching and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “You must not muzzle an ox to keep it from eating as it treads out the grain.” And in another place, “Those who work deserve their pay!” 19 Do not listen to an accusation against an elder unless it is confirmed by two or three witnesses. 20 Those who sin should be reprimanded in front of the whole church; this will serve as a strong warning to others. 21 I solemnly command you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus and the highest angels to obey these instructions without taking sides or showing favoritism to anyone. 22 Never be in a hurry about appointing a church leader. Do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
The church has a responsibility to take care of their Pastors and church staff.
19 is clear, it is saying just because you heard that Pastor Doe was at a hotel with sister Adear. Doesn’t mean it’s true. Yes the Bible is clear about not letting your good being spoken evil of, Romans 14:12-16 but it’s also clear about gossip.
Romans 14:12–16 NLT
12 Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God. 13 So let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall. 14 I know and am convinced on the authority of the Lord Jesus that no food, in and of itself, is wrong to eat. But if someone believes it is wrong, then for that person it is wrong. 15 And if another believer is distressed by what you eat, you are not acting in love if you eat it. Don’t let your eating ruin someone for whom Christ died. 16 Then you will not be criticized for doing something you believe is good.
Proverbs 21:23 NLT
23 Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.
Proverbs 26:20 NLT
20 Fire goes out without wood, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops.
1 Timothy 5:23–25 NLT
23 Don’t drink only water. You ought to drink a little wine for the sake of your stomach because you are sick so often. 24 Remember, the sins of some people are obvious, leading them to certain judgment. But there are others whose sins will not be revealed until later. 25 In the same way, the good deeds of some people are obvious. And the good deeds done in secret will someday come to light.
Wine in this time period had a lot of uses one was used for medicinal purposes
Use example of Coke.
Then Paul goes into a reminder verses 24/25 that all things will come to light some sooner then later and some later then sooner.
2 Corinthians 5:10 NLT
10 For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.
Luke 19:11–27 NLT
11 The crowd was listening to everything Jesus said. And because he was nearing Jerusalem, he told them a story to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away. 12 He said, “A nobleman was called away to a distant empire to be crowned king and then return. 13 Before he left, he called together ten of his servants and divided among them ten pounds of silver, saying, ‘Invest this for me while I am gone.’ 14 But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want him to be our king.’ 15 “After he was crowned king, he returned and called in the servants to whom he had given the money. He wanted to find out what their profits were. 16 The first servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made ten times the original amount!’ 17 “ ‘Well done!’ the king exclaimed. ‘You are a good servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you will be governor of ten cities as your reward.’ 18 “The next servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made five times the original amount.’ 19 “ ‘Well done!’ the king said. ‘You will be governor over five cities.’ 20 “But the third servant brought back only the original amount of money and said, ‘Master, I hid your money and kept it safe. 21 I was afraid because you are a hard man to deal with, taking what isn’t yours and harvesting crops you didn’t plant.’ 22 “ ‘You wicked servant!’ the king roared. ‘Your own words condemn you. If you knew that I’m a hard man who takes what isn’t mine and harvests crops I didn’t plant, 23 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’ 24 “Then, turning to the others standing nearby, the king ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one who has ten pounds.’ 25 “ ‘But, master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten pounds!’ 26 “ ‘Yes,’ the king replied, ‘and to those who use well what they are given, even more will be given. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. 27 And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.’ ”
We’ve all heard this parable and typically we use it to talk about the talents God gives us. But it is also about answering for what you have done well and what you have not done well.
God is not concerned with your thinking He is fair or unfair. He is concerned with your obedience.
1 Timothy 6:1–2 NLT
1 All slaves should show full respect for their masters so they will not bring shame on the name of God and his teaching. 2 If the masters are believers, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. Those slaves should work all the harder because their efforts are helping other believers who are well loved. Teach these things, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them.
The slavery that Paul is referring to here was employment. Remember this is part of the Roman empire and these were very wealthy people. People who became destitute would go into service (Slavery) for these individuals to pay off debts. Provide for their families or even just have a roof over their heads. They actually would become like a part of their masters family.
When you where that Ford jacket or Home Depot apron you are showing the name of the master! Not your name. This is the exact same ideal.
Exodus 21:16 NLT
16 “Kidnappers must be put to death, whether they are caught in possession of their victims or have already sold them as slaves.
Colossians 4:1 NLT
1 Masters, be just and fair to your slaves. Remember that you also have a Master—in heaven.
The 4 types of slavery at this point in history.
Chattel - the enslaving and owning of human beings and their offspring as property, able to be bought, sold, and forced to work without wages.
Bonded - is the pledge of a person's services as security for the repayment for a debt or other obligation.
Forced Labor - when individuals are compelled against their will to provide work or service through the use of force, fraud, or coercion.
Sexual Slavery - sex slavery, condition in which one human being is owned by another and is forced or otherwise coerced into working in the sex trade. Activities associated with sex slavery include prostitution, pornography, child sex rings, sex tourism, and such occupations as nude dancing and modeling.
1 Timothy 1:10 NLT
10 The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders, liars, promise breakers, or who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching
Watch these people they are here to start trouble!
1 Timothy 6:3–10 NLT
3 Some people may contradict our teaching, but these are the wholesome teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. These teachings promote a godly life. 4 Anyone who teaches something different is arrogant and lacks understanding. Such a person has an unhealthy desire to quibble over the meaning of words. This stirs up arguments ending in jealousy, division, slander, and evil suspicions. 5 These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy. 6 Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. 7 After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. 8 So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. 9 But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
The idea Paul is presenting here is don’t get caught up in the lies that you are to chase after riches! Understand that God is your provider and that if He blesses you with much then praise God use it to help others. If you only have a little learn to find contentment in it.
Verse 9/10 Paul expounds on the outcome of what happens when you don’t find contentment.
Leads you down a road of destruction.
1 Timothy 6:11–16 NLT
11 But you, Timothy, are a man of God; so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life, along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have declared so well before many witnesses. 13 And I charge you before God, who gives life to all, and before Christ Jesus, who gave a good testimony before Pontius Pilate, 14 that you obey this command without wavering. Then no one can find fault with you from now until our Lord Jesus Christ comes again. 15 For at just the right time Christ will be revealed from heaven by the blessed and only almighty God, the King of all kings and Lord of all lords. 16 He alone can never die, and he lives in light so brilliant that no human can approach him. No human eye has ever seen him, nor ever will. All honor and power to him forever! Amen.
We are to stay true to what God has called us to. Our love for Christ and not our love for money, power and other things which hold no heavenly value.
12 is clear we are to always be an example in our lifestyles. We are the witnesses of God our Father to the witnesses. Those lost in the world’s system.
13 is a reminder that Jesus as an example for us humbly professed His position in such a way that Pilate could find no fault in Jesus and later him and his wife became Christians and suffered martyrdom because of it.
Luke 23:4–5 NLT
4 Pilate turned to the leading priests and to the crowd and said, “I find nothing wrong with this man!” 5 Then they became insistent. “But he is causing riots by his teaching wherever he goes—all over Judea, from Galilee to Jerusalem!”
Luke 23:13–14 NLT
13 Then Pilate called together the leading priests and other religious leaders, along with the people, 14 and he announced his verdict. “You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent.
Did you know that In Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages, Pilate became the focus of a large group of New Testament apocrypha expanding on his role in the Gospels, the Pilate cycle. Attitudes split by region: In texts from the Eastern Roman Empire, Pilate was portrayed as a positive figure. He and his wife are portrayed as Christian converts and sometimes martyrs. In Western Christian texts, he was instead portrayed as a negative figure and villain, with traditions surrounding his death by suicide featuring prominently. Pilate was also the focus of numerous medieval legends, which invented a complete biography for him and portrayed him as villainous and cowardly. Many of these legends connected Pilate's place of birth or death to particular locations around Western Europe, such as claiming his body was buried in a particularly dangerous or cursed local area.
15/16 is a declaration and reminder of who Christ is and what we should expect. What we should preach. What we must proclaim and believe!
Romans 15:20–21 NLT
20 My ambition has always been to preach the Good News where the name of Christ has never been heard, rather than where a church has already been started by someone else. 21 I have been following the plan spoken of in the Scriptures, where it says, “Those who have never been told about him will see, and those who have never heard of him will understand.”
Romans 14:1 NLT
1 Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong.
Romans 13:11 NLT
11 This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.
We don’t have time to argue over Doctrine. We are all brothers and sister in Christ and as we draw nearer to the end the concern needs to be about proclaiming the gospel to all mankind around the world! How is God calling you to do your part?
1 Timothy 6:17–21 NLT
17 Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. 18 Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. 19 By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life. 20 Timothy, guard what God has entrusted to you. Avoid godless, foolish discussions with those who oppose you with their so-called knowledge. 21 Some people have wandered from the faith by following such foolishness. May God’s grace be with you all.
This last section is a reminder of the lack of security in this worlds system. Now you have to understand what was happening. Paul was well aware that his time was drawing near to an end. So much so that he gives three reminders.
Money is useless when you are running out of time. Sickness, Death, Imprisonment.
No matter what stand your ground for Christ don’t look to the left or right. Keep your eyes on Him.
3. Sad but true. Everyone will not come to Christ and there are those who will even walk away from Him. They will deny the faith.
Have you ever been disrespected by a follower of Christ and or disrespected one. What was the outcome.
