John’s Baptism

Context context context
John is preaching a shock and awe sermon
repent or burn
Turn to the Messiah or go to hell
you snakes need to turn around and flee the wrath of God
the axe is ready to chop you down because of your bad fruit
then John says he is unworthy to untie the Messiahs sandal
Then he is going to say something tat has a lot interpretations
Baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire
what does this mean?
we have to go to the Old Testament to understand this quote
Lets look at another misunderstood statement with a lot of interpretations
This is Jesus talking to Nicodemus on the subject of born again
John 3:4 LSB
Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
now Jesus is going to say something strange, but not strange to Nicodemus, a student of the Old Testament
John 3:5 LSB
Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
So what does this mean water and spirit
how would Nicodemus know this
Ezekiel 36:25–27 LSB
“Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your uncleanness and from all your idols. “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to do My judgments.
The gospel is given to us in the Ezekiel as what the Messiah will do
What the Holy Spirit would do
God says I will give you a shower, make you clean
make you a new creation
Soo
Getting back to the Holy Spirit and fire
what does John mean
All John has is the Old Testament to gather his knowledge from
let us do the same
Read Luke 3 1-20
Pray

Jesus Will Baptize

This is a function of our Lord He will do it.
this will be an internal baptism
John’s was an external
this is not some thing that we do
this is not something we initiate
Isaiah 44:3 LSB
‘For I will pour out water on the thirsty ground And streams on the dry land; I will pour out My Spirit on your seed And My blessing on your offspring;
Joel 2:28 LSB
“And it will be afterwards That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy; Your old men will dream dreams; Your young men will see visions.
Isaiah 4:4 LSB
When the Lord has washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and rinsed away the bloodshed of Jerusalem from her midst, by the spirit of judgment and the spirit of burning,
Jesus is the one doing the work
He is the one who will change lives
he is the one doing the baptism

With The Holy Spirit

God will give a new heart
obey my law
a new birth from above
wash away the filth
forgive all sin
pour out Gods blessing
from the New Testament we can see the beginning of this
Acts 2 the people in the upper room
mighty rushing wind
tongues like fire on every ones head
the gift of the Spirit was poured out
people spoke in other known languages
acts 10 44
Acts 10:44 LSB
While Peter was still speaking these things, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were listening to the word.
the gentiles were also baptized with the Holy Spirit
The ministry of Jesus. His death on the cross
sending the Holy Spirit
Baptizing with the Holy Spirit
changing lives, changing hearts,
making a new creation
now the other Baptism of Jesus

With Fire

what it is not
a second blessing
a baptism that we look for or want
does not involve barking like a dog
uncontrollable laughter, flopping on the floor
speaking in a gibberish
Just like the Baptism with the Holy Spirit this baptism is done by Jesus
Another teaching on the Fire is
fire is a purifier. purifying gold and silver
takes out the impurities and makes the gold more valuable
so the Lord takes us through the fire to get rid of the sin in our lives
But lets remember the context John is preparing the peoples hearts to meet the Messiah
sin is going to be met by the wrath of God
let’s look at the next verse 17
Luke 3:17 LSB
“His winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Here Jesus is separating the good from the bad
what does the Old testament tell us about this
Isaiah 29:6 LSB
From Yahweh of hosts you will be punished with thunder and earthquake and loud noise, With whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a consuming fire.
Isaiah 66:15–16 LSB
For behold, Yahweh will come in fire And His chariots like the whirlwind, To return His anger with wrath, And His rebuke with flames of fire. For Yahweh will execute judgment by fire And by His sword on all flesh, And those slain by Yahweh will be many.
yes the fire refers to judgement but why cant this be a refiners fire?
What does the Old Testament tell us of chaff
Luke 3:17 LSB
“His winnowing fork is in His hand to thoroughly clear His threshing floor and to gather the wheat into His barn, but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
turn to Psalm 1.
Chaff is the wicked
the people knew Psalm 1 and they knew the reference to the chaff
is Jesus going to separate people
Luke 12:51–53 LSB
“Do you think that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division; for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three. “They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”
at the end of the age Jesus will separate the believers and the unbelievers
Matthew 25:32–34 LSB
“And all the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom, which has been prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
the unbelievers
Matthew 25:41 LSB
“Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels;
John is telling the people who are wondering if John is the Messiah
that God is the messiah
and John is baptizing with water that has no eternal value
acts 19 1-7. these men were disciples of John
have not heard the gospel until Paul found them
they were doing what John had taught them. but John’s baptism does not save
only Jesus saves
were are sinners born sinners, sinned against God our entire lives
God is a righteous God and a just God all sin has to be punished
Romans 3:23 LSB
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 LSB
For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
but because God is also a God of love He provided a way of salvation
that is through Jesus dying on the cross to take our punishment
the Father God put our sin upon Jesus and paid the wages of our sin Death
so that He can baptize us with the Holy Spirit and make us whole
Make us a new creation with a heart of Flesh instead of a heart of stone
God loves so much that He sent His son to die for us
and if we receive this free gift of salvation by faith and have a heart of repentance of our sin
a heart that is softened and willing to receive this wonderful offer
you will not recieve the other Baptism of fire promised to all unbelievers
lets get back to our scripture
we began this sermon with the three words

Context Context Context

we can’t take one verse out of context and make a theology around it like the charismatics have done
what does the rest of Gods Word have to say about it?
what does the verses before and after say about it?
when we come to a difficult passage we need to do our own research
Study to show yourself approved unto God
rightly dividing the word of truth
the Baptism with the Holy Spirit we want
Baptism with fire we don’t
