The Gospel of Matthew A. Preparing to Teach Disciples and Potential Disciples from All Israel (5:1–2)

‘The disciples’ in Matthew are the Twelve because it is they whose sharing of life with Jesus and learning from him at every level provide the foundation on which the discipleship to which Matthew challenges his readers is ultimately based.

Overview of the sermon as a whole
Jesus begins with the proclamation of that the kingdom of God is available here and now
What is a kingdom? A place where ones effective will is carried out
Example: Kingdom of Andrew - pulpit move
Kingdom of God is everywhere that God’s will is carried out - done perfectly in heaven and sub perfectly here on earth
The Sermon on the Mount therefore is Jesus unpacking the new world order, the new version of reality, the way things work in His Father Kingdom
Going beyond the righteousness of the scribes and pharisees is to find your righteousness in something other than what you do! - you have to get beyond just not doing it. Its not about behaviour modification
thoughts feelings character habits how you live in your thoughts and world
Our actions come from within us
the pharisees tries to change action instead of changing heart
