Notes
Transcript
I. Political alliances and compromise.
II. Read 2 Chronicles 17:3-6 comment. 2 Chronicles 17:3-6 “The Lord was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David. He did not seek the Baals, but sought the God of his father and walked in his commandments, and not according to the practices of Israel. Therefore the Lord established the kingdom in his hand. And all Judah brought tribute to Jehoshaphat, and he had great riches and honor. His heart was courageous in the ways of the Lord. And furthermore, he took the high places and the Asherim out of Judah.”
III. Read 2 Chronicles 18:1 and comment on marriage alliances. 2 Chronicles 18:1 “Now Jehoshaphat had great riches and honor, and he made a marriage alliance with Ahab.”
IV. Two different views of God for Ahab and Jehoshaphat.
V. Read 2 Chronicles 18:2-3 and comment. 2 Chronicles 18:2 “After some years he went down to Ahab in Samaria. And Ahab killed an abundance of sheep and oxen for him and for the people who were with him, and induced him to go up against Ramoth-gilead.”
VI. After Jehoshaphat died and 2 Chronicles 21:6 “And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife. And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.”
VII. God’s mercy in 2 Chronicles 21:7 “Yet the Lord was not willing to destroy the house of David, because of the covenant that he had made with David, and since he had promised to give a lamp to him and to his sons forever.”
VIII. We need another Son of Jehoshaphat to follow.
IX. Read Romans 5:6-8 and John 4:13-14 and comment Jesus the Son of Jehoshaphat. Romans 5:6-8 “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” John 4:13-14 “Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
