The fear of God is not a terror or dread of punishment, but a

The Fear of God is Reverent and loving submission to His will recognizing His power and authority over our lives.

It is a recognition that God is supreme and deserves our worship, obedience, and adoration.
Luke 12:4–5 ESV
“I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!

Affects of Fear on Our Faith

Weakens Our Faith

Fear can cause us to doubt God's promises, which could cause us to question the validity of God's word
Matthew 25:24–25 ESV
He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’
Matthew 25:30 ESV
And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Distracts Us From God’s Presence

This will lead us to forget that God is always with us.
Hebrews 13:5 ESV
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6 ESV
Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”
When we give in to fear, we can forget about God's love, mercy, and faithfulness, making it difficult for us to trust Him and His word.
Fear can cause us to take matters into our own hands, denying God the opportunity to work in our lives

Prevents Us From Stepping Out on Faith

John 12:37–38 ESV
Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Lord, who has believed what he heard from us, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
John 12:42–43 ESV
Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.
Fear of this kind DOES NOT come from God
1 John 4:4 ESV
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

How To Let Go of Fear

Trust in God’s Word

Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Psalm 18:2 ESV
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Overcome Fear Through Love

2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
1 John 4:18 ESV
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
1 Peter 3:14–16 ESV
But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.
