Every Christian is meant to be this, but only in Christ
He died to redeem and purify a people
14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.
this is a full actualization of the law - Matthew 5:17-20
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
the kingdom is antithetical to the world, these kingdom characteristics are contrary to the way of the natural man

an awareness of depravity, need
To be poor in spirit is to be poor in the inward man, not in outward circumstances. Consequently, to be poor in spirit is to recognize one’s poverty spiritually before God.
James Montgomery Boice

David Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Those Who Mourn
Those Who Mourn
grieved by what sin causes, loss
Spiritual poverty leads to godly sorrow; the poor in spirit become those who mourn.
John F. MacArthur
10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
The Meek
The Meek
humble, gentle, mild
basically everyone who has met God
To be truly meek means we no longer protect ourselves because we see there is nothing worth defending.
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones
11 But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.
refusal to assert oneself, but asserts others
those who are poor in spirit and mourn will be meek yet bold - they know who they are
