Luke 6:17-26
*OS:* Fantastic weekend – Ladies Day ~/ Elder’s Retreat (Mexico 25th – 1st “spectacle” Easter
*1* If Jesus makes you feel comfortable with your agenda, then he's not Jesus….
Once you domesticate Jesus, he isn't there any more.
/Citation:/ Andrew Greeley, "There's No Solving Mystery of Christ," /Chicago// Sun-Times/ (1-16-04)
We have a text today that makes you uncomfortable, and if we leave here today comfortable with this text then we haven’t understood it.
One company held an inter-office softball game held every year between the marketing and support staff.
One year, the support staff whipped the marketing department soundly.
The marketing department demonstrated how they earn their keep, by posting this memo on the bulletin board after the game:
/The marketing department is pleased to announce that we came in second place in the recent softball season, after losing but one game all year.
The support department, however, had a rather dismal season, winning only one game."/
*I.
**Our text today is about perspective and we can never be comfortable with our perspective.*
A. Always be testing and adjusting the way we look at life.
B. Author Madeleine L'Engle, in A Wrinkle in Time: "I have a point of view.
You have a point of view.
God has view."
C. It’s God’s view we see in this text that’s uncomfortable.
*TS]* *2, 3, 4*, Luke 6:17-26
*II.
**5 1st thought – why is this different than Matthew’s account?*
A. God’s way of giving scholars something to write dissertations on.
B. Jesus was a traveling preacher – same principles over and over with various illustrations, and arrangements.
*III.
**If you question your life this text will point you in the right direction.*
A. If you keep going in the same direction you’ll end up where you’re headed.
B. So if you are heading in the wrong direction don’t rationalize and be comfortable with it, but take to heart what Jesus says and change direction.
*TS]* We find some meaningful perspectives of life in this text:
*I. **6 If you want a true perspective on life, and healing – go to Jesus.*
A. They came to Jesus to hear Him and be healed.
1.
These are disciples
2.
Maybe that’s why you are here today.
Life is out of hand, and you’re looking for answers – you’ve come to the right place.
B. A Wonderful Savior is Jesus My Lord
1.
A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord, A wonderful Savior to me; He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock, where rivers of pleasure I see.
2.
A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord, He taketh my burden away; He holdeth me up, and I shall not be moved, He giveth me strength as my day.
3.
With numberless blessings each moment He crowns, and filled with His fullness divine, I sing in my rapture, O glory to God for such a Redeemer as mine!
4.
When clothed in His brightness, transported I rise to meet Him in clouds of the sky, His perfect salvation, His wonderful love, I’ll shout with the millions on high.
5.
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock that shadows a dry thirsty land; He hideth my life in the depths of His love, and covers me there with His hand…
C. *7* Matthew 1128 “/Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”/
*TS]* *8* If you want to change your perspective on life you come to Jesus – listen to Him and receive His healing.
Perspectives…
*II.
**9 If you want a true perspective on life forget the stuff.*
A. *10* Notice the contrast:
1.
Blessed are the poor – Woe to the rich
2.
Blessed are you who hunger – Woe to the well feed.
3.
Blessed are you who mourn – Woe to you who laugh
4.
If you are poor you are hungry and sad – if you are rich you are well feed and comfortable.
B. *11* The story is told of a rich man who was determined to take his wealth with him into the next life.
The Lord finally gave in to his fervent prayers.
There was one condition: he could bring only one suitcase of valuables.
The rich man decided to fill the suitcase with gold bullion.
The day came when God called him home.
St. Peter greeted him but told him he couldn't bring his suitcase.
"Oh, but I have an agreement with God," the man explained.
"That's unusual," said St. Peter.
"Mind if I take a look?"
The man opened the suitcase to reveal the shining gold bullion.
St. Peter was amazed.
"Why in the world would you bring pavement?"
C. What is Jesus’ perspective on riches?
(material things)
1. *12, 13, 14 15* Luke 12:13-21
2. *16* “Your life doesn’t consist in the abundance of your possessions”
3. “Don’t store up riches for yourself and not be rich toward God”
4. *17* Matthew 6 33 /But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well./
*TS]* *18* Jesus is the one to listen to about perspectives in life, and He says there is nothing of substance in this world.
*III.
** 19 If you want a new perspective on life then forget popularity.*
A. Another contrast – Hated and Praised
1.
Consider it good if people don’t like you because of Him.
2.
This doesn’t just apply to Teens, peer pressure don’t end at 20!
3.
We all want to be accepted.
We all have a fear of rejection.
4.
It is better to be faithful than famous.
5.
Never confuse the will of the majority with the will of God.
B. What is Jesus really saying?
1.
Not – You should be unlikable, grumpy, or hard to get along with.
2.
Not – You will never be popular (He was through much of His ministry)
3.
Popularity is a dangerous value system (perspective) on which to judge ourselves or others.
4.
Just because in a democracy ‘majority rules’ doesn’t mean the majority is right.
*TS]* Changing, adjusting, refining your life perspective is not easy nor comfortable.
Jesus says to us today, “I have what you need” , “Don’t try to get it from the world”, and “don’t be worried if people don’t like you because you are living by my perspectives on life.”
*CS:* Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at something that doesn't really matter.
